  • The afternoon of May 10 2024, the Native American Studies Department hosted a panel titled “Weaving the Americas: Advancing Hemispheric Indigeneities For Native American and Indigenous Studies," with Maria Josefina Saldaña-Portillo, Carlos Tello Barreda, and Shannon Speed [Chickasaw]. The panelists presented their recent work and explained how it expands traditional understandings of Indigeneity in Native American and Indigenous Studies, with the goal of contributing to the development of a hemispheric framework for the discipline. Thinking across various geographic, disciplinary, and linguistic borders, presenters also addressed how expansive understandings of Indigeneity can aid in the development of strong hemispheric Indigenous movements, both within and beyond academia.
