  • This week, we're highlighting videos that were taken throughout the Upper Valley by some of our viewers! You'll observe a strange phenomenon in an icy river taken by a resident in Norwich, and see the wacky walk of an American Woodcock (aka, Timberdoodle) captured by residents in Hanover. Researchers are still unsure why Woodcocks walk in this rocking motion, but some speculate it may have to do with disturbing underground earthworms for better hunting.
Ice disks forming in rivers is a natural but rare phenomenon. It is believed that this happens due to temperature changes in the water, this then creates a vortex underneath that moves the ice. As the ice moves and bumps into the shore, it chips away the edges which creates its circular shape.
