  • This week Cassie Bernyk, UVLT Stewardship Programs Coordinator, visits Tunis District Conservation Area to talk about swamps for American Wetlands Month! What separates swamps from other types of wetlands is, they are dominated primarily by trees and shrubs. They are also characterized by very wet soils during the growing season and standing water during certain times of the year. Forested swamps are found in broad floodplains and receive floodwater from nearby rivers and streams.
Swamps are categorized by the most dominant trees in the wetland. For example, this swamp at Tunis is categorized as a Northern Hardwood- Black Ash- Conifer swamp.
For the rest of May, each Friday we will be showcasing the varieties of wetlands that UVLT has been able to conserve throughout the Upper Valley. Stay tuned for more facts and stories about bogs and fens!
