It's way more than a sign, it's something words can't describe. I'm old enough to remember the fights, they were always a cultural marker. The man was an icon, especially after he refused the governments offer for a trip to Vietnam, to kill or be killed in a senseless war. It gave hope to the hopeless, yes. But it he walked the talk, was a proud and beautiful black man. I'm an old white woman, and this made me cry. Mohammed Ali was the symbol of the end of US Imperialism for exploited people around the world. He was a fighter in every sense of the word. CZcams should still have his Olympic fight up. In any case, I'm really pleased to see the care taken here. ♥
Such a different type of project. Well done, supporting your city's culture and history.
So surprised at how well this has survived the British weather.
Looking forward to the next episode and particularly the lettering and the finish.
I too think the 80s were just 20 years ago
Yes. It's a mystery how my son got to his 40's. Does not compute. 😅
I can't believe that we're nearly 25 years into the 21st century.
@@phranerphamily no don't! That's just not possible! I only finished school a few years ago. In 1984...
@@sciangear4782 82 here 🥰
Exterior house paint is designed to chalk-form a thin layer of loose material--in order to let the rain carry off the dirt that lands on it. So maybe that's the medium he used.
What a lovely piece of local history. I am invested!
What a great story!
What a wonderful story about the boxing club. That is genuinely inspiring.
What an amazing history for this sign - truly part of the city's cultural roots.
Patching against the grain will be judged by future conservators.. it’s fun to watch and thanks
THANK YOU for such an amazing restoration and historical context.
I genuinely love the creaky floor boards in your studio. Reminds me of the old homes I used to live in as a child!
I have. Opulent of creaky floorboards upstairs. Was going to fix them but realised they were helpful .
Looks like you really have your work cut out for you! Looking forward to see how it looks when finished.
With some of those wood fillers you can wait till it is cream cheese consistency and then cut it back flush. That saves having to sand the excess.
It is wonderful that someone who appreciates what this sign means is given the job of restoring it. Thanks so much for sharing the history of the club and the background to its establishment. Thatcher days were bad days and what she did should never be glossed over.
I am really looking forward to seeing the second half cleaned up. Also even though I'm a patreon member I come over here and watch these on CZcams so that you get a check from them as well and as a CZcams premium member you get more from me. I'm saying this so that anyone else in the chat that might see my message knows that if they're supporting someone on patreon they should support them on CZcams as well.
Maybe you end up doing this but I would paint the back with outdoor mold resistant in case the frame fails. Even in the split it looks discolored.
This is great for so many reasons!! And we get to see it and in a weird but good way be part of it! Thanks looking forward to more! 💕😊
Thank you for the restauration and the history attached to this painting. It's something with a different sort of importance, not an art related one, but in a social context.
Is miss the 80's too. I can't believe the millennium is coming up! Tell the owners I would be in the market for a smaller print of this to hang on the wall
Wonderful glimpse into recent history. ♥️
Looking forward to this one James.
I truly enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing your talents.
you have a photo of the "young" painting, but do you have the original photo of the boxer? the painter reproduced a photo, it should not be difficult to find, the original can explain some details.
the plywood has several crossed layers, you should not worry about the direction of the wood.
there is never any paint on the frame, it seems nailed over the painting, maybe it should have been removed and put behind? I think this frame was added to the assembly, when the person understood that they could not hold the painting, a screw and a screwdriver, but that they could nail a frame and drive the screws in in advance to hold only the painting and the screwdriver.
What is going on? Am I in a time warp? That looks like pre-restoration Patrick, the Regency Gent, in the background at around 9:40. Are you playing games with us now James? LOL nevermind question answered 23 minutes in
Esperando 2 parte ❤❤❤❤❤
I realize the need to be meticulous when cleaning historic paintings but considering the paint and materials used for this sign, it looks like it could have simply been sprayed with a mild cleaning solution and wiped off with a clean cloth without causing any damage. Are there other factors that I'm not aware of?
I am also curious
Mmm, this IS an historical painting. He explained himself perfectly well in the video l think.
Or, think of it as an unsigned Andy Warhol a la Jackson Pollock (house paint).
Hello! 😊
I'm loving the rough naivety of the work combined with the standard restoration diligence. Commendable.
Oh well, I guess since you put this out a year later my suggestions are for nothing.
Cant see the point in hand sanding building timber just a waste of money paying someone for hours of work when it should be 10 minutes. So conserving 80s plywood and timber like its a frame from the 1600s then goes on to destroy the art by removing the vinyl letters and intends to paint his own! Is this video a joke?
