flashbacks to when a group of seniors "adopted" my friend and i when we were in 7th grade. it was a pretty big group since there were people from different year levels, different clubs. a pretty diverse group actually. there were times when we would all go to lunch together, and the "younger ones" would just watch our seniors debate about what the greatest anime in history is, ciphers, and whether the da vinci code should be considered a masterpiece 😂
In my school there was this thing called "Freshman Friday", where the seniors and juniors would prank freshmen on the first Friday of the school year. I got pranked on by being thrown in a garbage bin. Fun times. I miss and hate high school. 😂
Didn't exactly went like that for me. During my first year the eldest there were these eldest students that loved "testing" us newcomers. We went from walking in the middle of a line while getting the back of our neck constantly slapped to getting "humiliated"(not really) for not being able to do purposefully impossible tasks. The ones that kept going despite the embarrassment were allowed to hang out with them. A lot of didn't live near the school, resulting in a lot of us taking the train home once the school ours ended. An entire wagon would fill with only us, and we would scream and chant for the next 40 minutes while making fun of the students from the other schools that walked in the wagon we were in. I passed my final year giving ideas on how to keep the same energy going, since those students from before had graduated, and i still have videos of our slapping competition where we involved students from all the classes to give it their best. All i remember was my cheek being bright red while taking out student after student. And of course, the best part: Teachers weren't aware of this tournament.
Dude legit one of the juniors on my colorguard team did this to me it was strangely comforting- like she was really chill she made me less nervous about everything
I’m a freshman now and even though school hasn’t started for other kids, my band president has basically adopted me and has been amazing. She helps me read sheets and feel a bit comfortable playing and whatnot
I've been the youngest in my class and then the oldest when I lost a year due to moving around so I've been both the freshman (not really but I've had my moments) and the senior. Whenever I see very closed off or even troubled people in other grades lower than mine (in my country we don't do freshmen and juniors etc) especially if I knew they'd just moved or transferred I'd purposely bump into them or something (not literally ejfjje) and strike up a conversation with them and the smiles on their faces of relief and happiness was everything. I basically just do what I wish more people would have done for me when I changed schools a lot. Nothing overbearing or anything that can sound a bit condescending, just letting them know they're not totally alone. With some of them I'm still friends and guilty of declaring that I'm adopting them but thankfully they don't mind that
Had a senior girl like this when I decided to take art class as a freshman in 2000, she introduced me to Linkin Park back when Hybrid Theory just got released. 20 years later, I'm hoping she's living her best life bc she was dope AF!
if next year isn’t like this i’m officially canceling school. edit: this was a joke i don’t expect high school to be anything like this. ik i gotta pay attention to my work. y’all needa stop taking shit so far
yeah, my freshman friend group was entirely sophomores and juniors so this is very familiar to me, although i found most people were pretty genuine. my biggest piece of advice to any freshmen is be social with EVERYONE from the get go, even though it can be so draining. having both on level and upperclassmen friends is a lot of fun, and it’ll serve you well for the rest of your years
I remember reading all those books/movies about being proactive/trying to be social and I remember trying and it being so awkward. Walked up to a dude I never knew who was alone and thought we were "kindred souls." Only to find out later, he was a senior waiting for his friends n they had no clue who df I was. So they watched my new friend and I attempt to keep conversation with both of us being socially awkward. Eventually, I got into the cliché and they were a bunch of mellow people. Best tip I can give is get to know as many people in the first day/week/month before the groups really settle in. It'll be awkward and very forced ahah...but you'll find one...eventually
I feel like more than anything you just have to find people you’re comfortable around the trick is to make it not forced like they’re just people chillin havin a good time you’re just another dude who wants to join the group and have a good time if they’re toxic and weird when you’re just a random dude trying to make friends then they’re obviously not the type of people you want to hang around they usually stay in tight knit groups cause nobody likes that negativity those are the ones you’re probably just wasting your time with otherwise you can make friends with literally anyone
When I was a senior a few years back, Fortnite and Tik tock was starting to get big and so every underclassman was extremely annoying. At lunch they were default dancing in the quad… bro I couldn’t take it

This is literally the opposite of how students act in a British school 🤣 Act like this in a British school and you will probably get called a nonce by a year 7 and telling you they will shank ur mum up. Year 7s are brutal, saying that- year 11s aren’t friendly either, they think they are top shit haha

Bro I met my gf like that lmao. I was chilling in class, and when my AirPod fell out, she was walking by, picked it up and put it in. I was listening to Flaws and Sins by Juice, and she went “you listen to Juice? I freaking love him”. She sat down next to me, and we listened to Juice, X, and Ski for the rest of the class period. Later that day she wanted to chill since we had been talking the whole period and we both were really similar, and so we went to the park to smoke a couple joints together. Talked until like 3 am. I took her back to her house in my truck since she had walked over from the high school and missed her bus, and the next day we were pretty much together 😂. It was awesome. We’ve been dating for about a year and a few months now

While being a Senior myself I used to take some freshman under my wing just to give'em some advice or help them out at school when they needed it.
I can proudly say that some of them are now my friends while I'm on my last year of college and they're thriving on their own paths in life.
Being kind and/or some sort of mentor to our younger pals can really have a positive impact from my experience.

When I moved in the middle of freshman year, I was placed in a class with a considerable amount of seniors. They roped me into the school and got me comfortable, I was the strict nerd, they were the lovable Bodyguard, still friends with one of them to this day.

THIS FRESHMAN? ITS M I N E

And of course, the best part:
Teachers weren't aware of this tournament.
Man, every freshman needs some guidance to boost their confidence.
Not me being a Sophomore getting adopted by Juniors-

I wish someone would do this for me. I don’t go to school in America, so it’s a bit different, but I still wish someone would be this kind to me

With some of them I'm still friends and guilty of declaring that I'm adopting them but thankfully they don't mind that
"THIS FRESHMAN. ITS MINE." got me dying 😭😭

It sort of is, with like kids you are in the same clubs/sports
yeah, my freshman friend group was entirely sophomores and juniors so this is very familiar to me, although i found most people were pretty genuine. my biggest piece of advice to any freshmen is be social with EVERYONE from the get go, even though it can be so draining. having both on level and upperclassmen friends is a lot of fun, and it’ll serve you well for the rest of your years
I'm a junior now and like half my friends are seniors. Which is funny cuz when I was a freshman, half my friends were sophomores and juniors lmao
“This freshman, it’s mine!”
Basically every senior at my school lol. Everyone adopts each other.
“THIS FRESHMAN IS MINE!” That had me dying laughing 🤣
I feel like more than anything you just have to find people you’re comfortable around the trick is to make it not forced like they’re just people chillin havin a good time you’re just another dude who wants to join the group and have a good time if they’re toxic and weird when you’re just a random dude trying to make friends then they’re obviously not the type of people you want to hang around they usually stay in tight knit groups cause nobody likes that negativity those are the ones you’re probably just wasting your time with otherwise you can make friends with literally anyone

a cliché is a trope that has been overused to the point of becoming stale
