Joranalogue - Filter 8 *FIRST PATCH* (audio rate vocal tones and more)

- Here's my first patch video with the new Joranalogue Filter 8 / F8 which is a 8 output multimode filter that's also an 8-phase oscillator. We've get exponential and linear FM, great tone, 1, 2, 3, 4 pole low pass outputs and other filter modes. There's 1v/oct tracking, audio rate modulation giving us vocal and formant like tones and I'm using Select 2 to switch the audio input into the filter and also switching outputs. Mixing in other outputs through other processing also gives a nice ping pong rhythms pattern that works well when panned for a stereo image. Full video demo coming in the not too distant future! :)

Amazing stuff as always! Excited to hear what other sounds you'll squeeze out of Filter 8 for the full demo video.
Cheers Joran.
Wow, sounds fantastic! Just what I need, another filter to drool over. Looking forward to full demo.
haha thanks.
Almost like a vocoder sound. Daft punky. I like it.
Yes, linear FM on a VCF allows you to inject some nice vowel-y tones into your patches - shame it's such a rare feature on filters!
I can definitely hear a few DP-esq sounds in there. The formant like tones from audio rate modulating filters is always good fun and something I think that people don't explore much of.
I LOVE ! 💜
thanks
Love your videos, mate! Now this one sounds like another must-have filter. Wait. What about the Polivocs and the Cinnamon DIY kits sitting on my shelf? I’ll need to ask for 2 more hours per day. Lol 😂
Which Polivoks filter? I've demo'd two by Erica Synths, the original DIY one and the Dtech which are really cool. Cinnamon I covered in a Future Music magazine video, also a good filter. Filter 8 of course is a great filter too, hard decisions.
The DIY one. Yeah, those tough decisions always :-P But it's good to play with stuff for a while to find out what you really really like. Rather buy and try different modules and then shed the ones that don't work in your flow
absolutely.
Certainly a cut above any of my current filters, all Doepfer. Not to dis the Doepfer filters, of course, it's the additional "options" on the Filter 8 that makes it stand out...
Yeah Joran has really pushed the feature on this one 8 phase filters already existed but there's lots of extras on this one.
Yeehaw
careful cowboy :)
Would this be a good vanilla filter? I've got a polivoks and 3 sis. Looking for a good module to broaden my rack while limiting to 3 filters. I love your videos. Any advice would help. I like chill fluffy ambience.
Hi Elvis, it's definitely god a different tone to the Polivoks but not having a 3 sisters here to compare I can't say how different to that it would be. It definitely sits nicely before FX for ambient stuff, with the softer 1 or 2 pole low pass output and not much resonant you'll get some nice fluffy sort of gentle modulations before FX trails etc.
DivKidVideo thanks my friend! Love your videos. Always very helpful 🙂
What signal (oscillator?) is going into the IN of the Filter 8. I can see the yellow patch cable coming from Select 2, but I'm not sure that clears it up for me.
The input was a mix of things. I mixed together the main output from the Erica Synths Graphic VCO (czcams.com/video/Ef5hFZe9cQ0/video.html) with Mutable Instruments Tides in a mixer. That goes to one input of the Select 2 (czcams.com/video/Twc09-BgZoE/video.html) and the second input to Select 2 is the secondary (sub) output on the Graphic VCO. I'm then switching between those with a gate pattern.
very cool.
Reminds me of AFX's analord stuff
Now that you mention it, it also sounds a bit like a slower Synthacon 9.
Not enough reverb and electro 808. I'll try harder next time :)
You've already got your Squarepusher game down, now you know what to work on next! ;)
Aphex Acid! :)
Also need a few hundred thousand quid of the best outboard EQ, compressors, limiters, etc.
Clicks are from step voltage doing the modulation?
which point of the video?
1:44
That's the quarter note clock into the ping input. Could be pulled out to stop that easily. I had the filter more resonant and it was pinging it nicely but as that was backed off then filmed it's just adding a pulse and a little thump/click. So not the modulation, user error on my part.
Cool, fair enough. Very nice module this. Sure sounds better than those zero delay DSP ones, to my ears anyway!
that's interesting, I haven't thought about the differences or tested it.
