I remember being 17, a newly grad from highschool and crying in front of my parents because you gave the truth about loans. My first video of you was about college debt. My parents were not willing to pay for it and it was up to me to figure it out.
A few days later I joined the army to get my college paid for. Got a bachelors in Accounting and Finance and now a home owner at 23 and that is my ONLY debt. Staying away from debt is probably the single most important decision I made while I was young.

@@israelruiz8706 I have listened to Dave Ramsey for over 10 years and I agree with most of what he teaches. Bottom line, it works and will make you a millionaire if you follow his Total Money Makeover principles.
BOTH of my kids, four year degree, UTA and A&M, one lived at home and worked while going to school "knuckled it out". The other Scholarships and summer jobs. Paid for cars, zero debt. I couldn't be more proud.

They were lucky to be allowed to stay at home. That that was even an option was a great fortune. Some folks kick the kids out at 16 or 18, telling their kids they are doing them a favor and teaching them how the world really works. No one is just going to give you things like a place to stay!

@@margaritayavila7455 right, there is some luck involved, but they also worked hard. Plenty of people do nothing but party and “enjoy the college experience” outside of their class work, and use summer as simply a break. Sounds like her kids worked harder than most.

In my experience at community college there were more people attending while working in a parallel field which added significant experience and knowledge
@@Musicienne-DAB1995I went to community college and I felt so much shame at the time. But now that I'm in my 30's I believe that was the best move I made. I see my friends who went to dream colleges and they are still so burdened.
Cc helps the first two years, but it doesn't cover the next 2-3 years to finish a "4-year" degree.

My wife went to the same community college and got a two year nursing degree. She got a nursing job that paid for her four year degree.

I wish. I found it nice that although Dave and his audience largely don’t agree with AOC, they still showed some footage of her speaking against the predatory lending companies.
I personally found that to be of good faith and liked how even on some things we can reach across the aisle and shake hands on a common issue.
They never teach us accounting or anything really useful in high school....it's algebra that most people will never use.

If I have a kid I’ll tell them that if you just want a “college experience” you can actually just move to a college town, get half a dozen roommates, work a handful of hours a week and spend the rest drinking. It’s really not that expensive to do that.

Beyond that, if he spends the rest of his time reading the front section of The NY Times daily, he will have about 100x more useful and relevant knowledge and understanding of the world than any history, sociology, or political science major who wasted four years and $250k on a worthless degree.

I graduated with 24k in debt in 2011. After 9 years of deferments , forbearances, and income based repayment, my balance was 39k. After I started Dave's plan, I was able to pay it off in 10 months. Worked my BUNSSSS off. Totally debt free , paid off 50k total in 13 months. Debt free here on out. Never looking back.
As a finance professional, I’m here to tell you, I have lawyers making $400k per year that are buried in Ivy League debt that is eating them alive. On the other hand, I have teachers and customer service reps that are financially free and living comfortably. Four years of college bliss can easily turn into a lifetime nightmare. Don’t forfeit your future for four years in that dream school if you don’t have dream school money.

Why isn’t this on Netflix? Excellent documentary. If I can even say “luckily,” I was able to graduate with just over $13k in debt. Fortunately, I am now an engineer.
Unfortunately, until today, I’ve only seen it on Amazon Video/Prime Video. If you have Amazon Prime it is free. I am SO happy to see that it is on here and accessible to more people.

There is a HUGE difference in taking out 13k(which is just 3.25k a year) and taking out 120k or 30k a year. Some people have credit card debt totaling more than this guy’s loans. Debt is almost never a good idea. However, assuming this guy has a job, he’s alright. It would be a different story if he ended up unemployed.
Such a great documentary. I had parents that thankfully steered me away from student loans before I ever knew who dave ramsey was. I worked my tail off in a factory every summer (12-16 hour shifts) and my parents sacrificed alot and I was able to be the first person in my family to graduate debt free with a bachelor's degree. That was 20 years ago and I'm 100% debt free to this day including my home. The culture definitely preys on our youth and its absolutely disgusting.

I went to law school and graduated 100% debt-free in May of this year. It was one of the hardest things I ever did. I had to apply for outside scholarships and run my small business part-time while enrolled. And the world went crazy in the midst of that. But I did it. I graduated in the top 10 of my class and also passed the bar exam with plenty of room to spare. Higher education does NOT have to come with student loan bondage. You can do it another way. Believe you can and get after it!

@@willjbird3342 And? Not everyone's journey will be the same. Others will have their own unique ways of making it happen. But they have to want it badly enough to think outside the box and truly believe they can have a debt-free degree. My journey has its unique aspects, absolutely. But it's a testament to the fact that going into debt for a degree is not inevitable if you determine to do it another way.

What I like here is that these aren't people who studied some obscure degree sitting in their parents basement complaining about their loans as some people try to portray them. These people studied for degrees where they should be able to find work, pay back the loan, and contribute to society. This is who is being ripped off by this system.
Yeah but...the one young girl went to NYU for $75k yearly for a music degree. She is going to be burdened for the rest of her life. The other girl decided her love of Duke wasn't worth $300k and will probably never regret that decision.
The orthodontist broke down in tears about his debt and paying it back. But in the time between the footage and end credits (1-2 years?), they paid off $400k!!! I bet Dave sat down with him and got them on a serious debt freedom plan.

Some of them. I truly appreciate the nuance in this documentary. There are plenty of ridiculous, entitled people here, but also people who were gamed by the system. They needed the degree, and the degree was inflated by the long-term interference of the federal government.
I remember the day I paid off my student loans, it was the most freeing moment of my life.

Got my bachelors and masters degree debt free! Currently making over $100k in a field I enjoy. I suffered ultimate pain and sacrifice working 2-3 jobs during college to make this happen but it was all worth it!

Whats stupid is that a lot of jobs dont really need a college degree - or the college degree is not useful for a job. There should be more companies willing to hire community college and technical school grads.
Got $35000 in debt for my first degree that I don't even use. Paid it off with a near-minimum wage job in 2020 and on I'm track to graduate with my associates in nursing, debt free next semester... I'm going to find an employer to pay for my my BS if I decide to go on. I got out due to a lot of sacrifice and hard work. Never again.

I am nearing the end of a student loan payoff journey that started at 109k and is currently at 16k. I am a regular high school teacher. There are so many aspects of this documentary that ring true. As a 2002 HS graduate we simply weren't as savy and online learning was in its infancy. I wish I had done things differently but I can now say 'I am not where I want to be but at least I am not where I used to be.' Keep working hard, be goal driven---- and I hope everyone in this documentary is richly blessed at some point in their individual paths.

Also an 02 grad. My parents told me over and over to never have debt. I went to school in constant fear and anxiety of losing my academic scholarships. I worked and my parents helped some. Then I graduated and paid off my husband's student loans. I did not have a fun college experience but after hearing stories like yours, I'm grateful for how things turned out for me.
I am happy to say that yesterday I paid off my student loans, only took me 13 years to pay the debt with one loan at 13%. I will never get a student loan ever again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I knew then what I know now.
I was told that the only way out of poverty was a college degree. I enrolled in the income based repayment plan and now 24 years after graduation I owe more than the day I graduated. I wish I would have had seen this before I enrolled. The American Dream is a nightmare. I will never be free of this albatross around my neck.

Sorry to hear it. However, I thought the loan program was to forgive the remaining debt after 20 years of payments? Although it may apply only to newer loans, but surely it is worth checking into.
I’m so grateful that my parents wouldn’t allow me to take out a loan to go to the school I wanted to. At the time, it was devastating. However, they helped me financially go to a college in state and was able to graduate debt free. What a life changer! I was able to start my life free! I watched all my friends struggle with paying off loans and we were all doing the same thing no matter what school we went to. Most people do not even use their degree.

What is sad is that young kids are encouraged to borrow these massive amounts of money before they have the maturity level to realize just how stupid it is and how impossible to pay back. Then they expect everyone else to pay it for them. The kid is right... teenagers make boneheaded decisions. Not disparaging them - they simply do not have the life experiences and maturity to know better than to borrow hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I was saddened to see couples having to go out of their way to donate plasma, which is another scheme where the blood banks get rich, in order to make a few extra dollars to make ends meet. This is after the college diploma, which was 'supposed to' put you ahead of the pack. Too many schemes placed on the kids. Seems diabolical.
... and if you, the parent advise them against it they don't listen anyway because "everyone is doing it!"
What be just as important is evaluating how relevant is the degree that is being sought, what is the demand of for that degree, how much the college training is relevant to the day to day demands of that position and how many other people have that degree in relationship to the real demand for that particular degree. Going higher up into the Graduate level the course work tends to be more specialized for a certain field and useless in other fields and if that field is overcrowded that could be a problem.
Blame George Bush's NCLB forcing schools to push college on EVERYBODY and stigmatizing trades for 20 years. My public high school forced us to apply to colleges and prevented you from doing trade classes until junior year.
My parents encouraged me to get student loans because they would not pay. Borrowed student loans in 1994. I'm down to $95,000 for an accounting degree. I went back to school at 40 years old, paid out of pocket and got scholarships to be an RN. Making way more money with an associates degree in Nursing than I ever even thought of in accounting. Still paying this ball and chain student debt from 30 years ago though. If the government had wanted to take off some of it, which would have been all interest, I would not have stopped them. The banks have been absolute slimeballs! My kids will not be living with this same mistake.

I wish I would’ve known this sooner in my career. I graduated with a doctorate degree in 2016 with 110k in debt that has gained interest over the years. I’m finally following the baby steps and am trying to pay them off in the next 4 years. Aiming to be debt free by 40. I wish this documentary existed when I was 21.

I’m now happy to have a dad who put me to work at an early age and learn by some amazing people in my life. I’m glad to be retired debt free and making it without college. I do remember visiting my friends in college and envied them then, because they were living the dream. The best lesson I have learned is to never be envious, it’s a horrible trait.

It’s a totally different world. You feel the weight come off your shoulders, and if everything else is paid off, it’s not a matter of waiting to retire, it’s when would you want to retire. Also gives you the incredible gift of giving. Keep grinding, only makes you sharper. KEEP HUSTLING!
That's it. The only way to free yourself is to pay them off instead of waiting for someone to do it for you, which will never happen.
I know some people with 100k loan for a bachelors in anthropology. Atleast once you are done with school your starting salary is close to six figures as a doctor.

I’m impressed with Clayton’s decision at the end of the video. He initially came off as interested in the temporal happiness of the now, but was influenced by the wisdom of someone with more experience, a mentor, to make a wiser more mature decision. I hope he sticks with his pursuits and finds success and happiness!

A dentist who’s life is tied to student debt, as the vast majority are, now has to charge the unreasonable prices they charge, just to stay afloat… same with many other professions… so ultimately the entire society suffers due to printing of money that banks get to give out to students. In reality it’s a scheme that puts the chains on all people because the ramifications of those loans go far beyond the individual who got the loan.
It was really sad to hear the teacher talk about his degree as a symbol of pain. A very good motivator for me to help myself and my kids have a plan for paying for a college education. I would not like to see them living in misery like that.
From Australia, graduated undergrad and post-grad debt free. I didn’t have the real life experience of living in student loan, but watching the documentary still made me emotional. Like I’m right there with them suffering while being in debt. Made me cry. Well produced documentary. All American high school students should definitely watch this before graduation.
You have HECS and HELP loans in Australia right? Those are income-based loans, yes?
@@Derek032789 yes but you need to reach a level of income for it to start paying it back. Plus as far as I understand it’s only on your first degree, everything after that is on your dime
@@Derek032789 Yes there is HECS/HELP which is Australian student loan system. It is run by the government. You do start paying when you earn more than 51k. The amount you pay is based on how much you cross this threshold, therefore it is income based. There is no interest on the loan, but the amount is adjusted to inflation.
I’m one of the lucky ones that didn’t need to take on debt. I received scholarships. Very grateful.
It’s not so much about the student loans, but the colleges having no accountability for their products, prices or outcomes. We need to attach that accountability to the colleges or we will never be able to fix this problem.

I had poor grades in HS but graduated in '91 - I think my grades protected me from expectations to go to a larger university so I just got a music scholarship to a junior college and had no debt. My career started slowly at first, but I was able to get further from gained experience to the point I feel like I have a life and salary I am proud of.
I'm from Spain and I know this type of debt is weird in Europe, yet Ramsey has taught me how to be responsible with my financial future. I really appreciate your Job Ramsey.

Everyone thinking about college needs to see this! Thankfully my (now) wife, found Dave near the end of college. It was late, but better than never. We were able to climb out of the student debt hole, but it cost a pound of flesh. If we had to do it again, we'd take all the tips here seriously. We're now debt free and on the way to building wealth.

Great info! The best money advice I received was from an older anesthesiologist I worked with. He said, keep living like a broke student after you start working and pay off your debt as fast as you can. It worked and made all the difference in my life!
I think when college graduates get out of school they start living the good life with a great job but if they don’t pay off their debt first, their dream becomes a nightmare.
Graduated from a private university this past May debt free by the grace of God and Dave Ramsey. Worked full time and got so many scholarships, the college gave me a $4,000 check when I graduated. My advice to students in HS is to take as many CC classes as possible and to start out in a CC college. I did that and I got my batchlors degree in business in only 3 years completely DEBT FREE.

First I want to say Thank you for sharing this on CZcams free of charge. I would also like to say thank you for changing my mindset on money in general. My wife and and I were 224k in debt including our mortgage in 2018. We are now less than 140k in debt and have cash flowed our daughters post high school education and are currently cash flowing our son’s degree in pro flight which isn’t cheap!

Honestly Congress should heavily consider freezing the interest on student loan debt, even if it's for a period of time, to allow people to pay the principal down. This is insane. Not a fan of "canceling" student loan debt cuz it doesn't work that way, it just shifts the burden of debt from the borrower to the taxpayer. But a freeze on interest im absolutely for!
I'm 48, deaf, and autistic. There is an 85% under-and-unemployment rate in the autism community. My parents are frail. I've been struggling for many years to boost my income so I can pay off all my debt. Now, things are more complicated with all the ridiculous "mandates" that conflict with my sincerely held religious beliefs. But, I still have hope and I've been making steady progress learning valuable skills like data analytics and web marketing.
I have learned far more on CZcams than I ever did in college. It's not even close

What sucks is when you parents pressure you into going to college even tho ur not sure what u wanna do yet at 18. Im 30k in student loans and dont even work in that field.
Watching this as a 70 year old 😢 left school at 14 in Ireland worked at all sorts till my retirement.

Excellent work here guys. I've been telling young people this for 30 years - to no avail. We need skilled laborers, craftsmen, builders, etc.
Exactly. If the money had been diverted towards this kind of training, then there'd be no reason to rely on mass immigration to plug a skills gap that doesn't really exist.
I went to a trade school to be diesel mechanic worked 5 years at a dealership which paid for my school got me experience and specialty certifications I own my own shop now and am one of the only shops in my area that excels at troubleshooting the emissions system on the modern diesel engines and I can get it in and out in half the time the dealership can people are willing to pay the extra money for a quick and quality turn arou
You can make 25 an hour about a year out of high school working irrigation. 300 bucks to get certified and trained. Even more in trucking or plumbing though you'll pay more for it. Still, it literally takes 1 year MAX to get trained.
This was a great documentary, I would have liked to see more on the massive field of opportunity for expertise without going to college. Also, props to the editor 👍🏻

I typically do not listen to Dave Ramsey, but this was a very well-put-together piece. It shines a light on the plight of the average graduate who thought this was the path to upward mobility.
I'm currently working on an Economics paper, my topic is "should college tuition be free". This documentary gave me just the insight I need, thank you so much for making this available. Debt has become such a norm in todays world and its truly disgusting, praying for everyone that owes.
Maybe not completely free but payable. 200k to 500k for is daylight robbery.
College attendance can never be completely free, because if it is, the money is coming out of someone else's pocket. College professors and schools aren't going to let you attend and use their time and utilities for free. Tuition has ballooned out of control because schools realize they have easy access to guaranteed money if they can lure people to their school, so they are putting the explosive tuitions into building more attractions to lure more and more students there. That cycle needs to break if people have any hope of putting those schools in their place. Alternative/Online education certifications and companies willing to consider those other forms of education can get that process started.
Nothing is “Free.” In European countries, they are taxed 60%-70% of their income which pays for college (and medical care) AND, their population is FAR lower than America. Around 35million people+ compared to over 300million+ Americans. NOTHING IS “FREE.”
I joined the military to pay for college they had a G.I. Bill at that time. This plan still exists I wish more students would do this. And by the way no one makes you take a student 👨🎓 loan 💵.
Think everyone should, join the military.
Is there non-active duty things that some people can do? I literally could not do all that boot camp and such. I am literally not bulit for it.
It's not so much as to no one makes one take out student loans it's the fact that student loans are more popular than vocational training and self employment opportunities. These things just recently began a high school curriculum.

I won over $13k in scholarships in just my first year! They’re so overlooked and undervalued it’s ridiculous. So glad I did that and graduated debt free from college, I can’t imagine the shackles my peers have for the same education.
I was hired to be a college and career counselor and received zero training. I had to figure out the job on my own and I actually cared about the students success, imagine if I just wanted a pay check. I can see why these students struggle to find scholarships, the staff isn’t even trained on how to find them.
I cried during this and it is so sad. I want to be like the Ramsey team and due every can to help people stay out of this and be debt free!
Same here! This is one of the biggest emergencies of our time. So many millions of lives are being ruined.

Great job Ramsey team! Thank you showing it free. So sad that student loans are big business. Years ago, when I had student loans, I asked for a 3 month forbearance, was told no payments, but interest would add on. When the payments restarted and I saw the big jump in interest and payment, I knew they were not my friend and got gazelle intense to pay them off. So grateful they are paid off. Told my own kids, debt for college is off the table. Hang in there borrowers, take one baby step at a time. Stay strong.
In the 90s, there was a monstrous amount of pressure to go to college. TV shows pushed it hard. And working on exhaust manifolds was considered subhuman almost. Now I don’t regret my accounting degrees and my accounting masters, but that 80k in student loans sucks. Now, we are in BS2 and working on it, but student loans are a long-term mess for a 4 year program. Now I'm going to finish my MBA next year DEBT FREE for that program. And then I want to start a clinical mental health program, but that will also be debt free. Or it won't happen. Good luck everyone and God bless.
Thank you for sharing this. I’m currently paying off my student loans. I’m a first generation college graduate and everyone normalized student loans. I wish someone would have warned me about the long term consequences. Thankfully I know now and will educate my son and future children about going to school debt free!

You should educate your son about the way women are with divorce, alimony, and child support so he doesn’t get in trouble with that as well.
In Ancient Rome, one was a full adult at 16 but one could not take out debt or loans or sign any financial contracts until the age of 23. I think we need to bring back some ancient wisdom.

As a college professor, I have recommended this to my students.
In 2010 I graduated high school. I sat down and did the maths and worked out I was more likely to be rich at 30 if I started working at one of the local factories instead of going to college like so many of my classmates.
Now I'm 29 and my maths was spot on. I'll retire at 35 if I choose to.

Thank you for this! Will definitely share to everyone I can possibly share this to! The message needs to be spread: no more student loan debt.
I didn’t know the first thing about money when I graduated with about $15k in student loans (thankfully it wasn’t more). I took FPU at my church soon after graduating and paid off my student loans within a year and never looked back. I can say after 10 years of following the plan, it absolutely works and Dave Ramsey changed my life.
This was a fantastic documentary...To graduate debt free, most students should attend a community college/in-state university, take CLEP/DSST exams to knock out common credits, apply for scholarships, take online courses to cut down on transportation/living expenses, and ONLY take classes from a REGIONALLY accredited school. National accreditation institutions are trash.
One problem is that many entry level jobs now require a degree but it doesn’t mean you have to get one from Harvard. It can be from a cheaper school. I’m an entrepreneur so I’m not really effected by it personally
What irritates me is when that entry position does not really need a degree. In my country, I passed so many jobs over which I could have done, if not for the fact that they were demanding a Bachelor's.

Paid off my wife's tuition before we got married. Prior to that I joined the military and got out, used my GI bill, went to a city college and graduated. My daughter is 12 years old now and I've already started telling her we can't afford college for her and that she's going to have to do her best to get a full scholarship; even though I opened a 529 plan for her since she was one years old. She can go to an ivy league school if she chooses to go for her masters and doctorate degree until then she will go to a local college and staying at home.
One of the young ladies at the table said, "To Become successful, you've got to take it all." One of the worst things about the manipulation that has invaded the minds of our youth regarding student loans is that they think it's all for achieving success, but they don't even know how to define success because they haven't tasted it.
They haven't even picked out a career. Students go to school studying something they're mildly interested in and the they get to find a career. It's backward. We should be researching careers, choosing confidently, and then matching a degree to that career. So now students think it's worth it for them to go massively into debt for an education that's not even motivating them toward a viable career.
Success. Give me a break.
