Modifying an Aussie Icon! Would Brocky Approve? 🇦🇺 HDT VL Calais Sport Ep 2.

- čas přidán 27. 02. 2023
- On this episode of The Skid Factory we set about modernising an iconic 1980's HDT VL Calais by adding a modern engine management system.
We explain in depth what's required to successfully convert a carburettored engine to modern engine management from fuel system to ignition right down to wiring needs and initial startup.
The ancient Quadrajet Carburettor is being replaced by multi-port fuel injection and an electronic throttle body from an LSA. The distributor is also swapped out for a VT Commodore crank angle sensor so the Haltech Elite 2500 ECU can have full control over the engine.

Brock was always a fan of innovation. He would have wanted it to have the best that was available and practical... and 200 shot of nitrous. Brock would have wanted it to have a 200 shot of nitrous lol
improved! those old carby holden v8s were junk. the outside of the car and most of the 'purity' (lol) is still there, and anyway, we all know it's the Brocky Orgone Energy Crystal that really makes the car go.
Improved!
IMMORTALISED IT
@@doctorscoot
You're probably thinking of a 253 with a 2 barrel carby.
My VB SLE 5.0Ltr with Toyota 5 speed absolutely hammered.
Improved it, Peter Brock always went with the newest technology he could in hdt.
Pretty sure Brocky was on some of those crystals they made on breaking bad. They could put a dirty big chunk of rose quartz in the glove box for some positive energy. Or maybe just some quartz for a new beginning.
Including magnets and crystals.
@@Gooie69 the blue rock candy 😂
@@Gooie69he was just tryna keep his Mrs happy.
"It will Bolt on after we modify it heavily" ain't that the truth 🤣
I actually feel exited for the owner. Going from a non running car too a car that has never run better in its lifetime would have to be amazing. Another great vid my dude’s.
Shayne is pretty stoked.
What's important is the owner is happy.
That engine sound... that is the music of my people!
Gosh. It sounds better than any LS!
As a owner of a r8 clubby I agree.
Never was a big fan of Holden V8s, but they do sound good.
"On ya taint" 🤣🤣🌭💩🤣🤣
Only reason to own a 5L is because of the noise, not the power 😭🤣
@@Cava23 they are great for putting down power tho
180i 304 engine has BMW hydrolic lifters, its compression is perfect for a supercharger.
You can get 300hp without boost easy
You, Al, are a master of your trade, not only improving classics with modern componentry but making them beautiful like fine art.
the hammer sound effect makes me grin every time... appreciate the fun along with the information :D thx guys.
Retromodding is my far and away favourite thing to watch. Love seeing classic cars sprinkled with current gen technology, love it even more when it's done in a way where it's not immediately obvious. The VL Turbo build was great too.
Totaly agree, love retro mods, old style with modern tech.
you've simplified the enjoyment process for the owner. turn key, can take his mate out for a drive, and the car behaves its self.
Cheers
Jim
Love the squeaks while hammering 😂😂
A bit of technology makes an old car so much more enjoyable to drive, and that's why I have one,to drive it.
The hammer for tapping on the throttle body was the best 🙂
I think Brocky would be proud.
Loving the energy poloriser banter too guys,
%100 improvement , keeping old cars on the road and keeping them enjoyable is what’s important
I think that is the best way of keeping engines like this running
LMAO "the guy she told you not to worry about". Nice one Woody!
Improved it for sure… I know carbs keep cars original, but coming into the new school, with new technology, but keeping it look old school, that’s where you guys have totally made this work..
Can’t wait to see the results!!
it's 2023 !
up grading it makes it both respect the past but keeps it relevant !
Good job Al !🧔♀
Improved it. Made it a lot more tuneable. Possibly even helped it out emissions wise.
Nothing like resto mods tastefully done
Definitely improved the vehicle. That is what Brock would of done to it if the tech was available then. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃
the tech was available then
@@mycosys
Not like it is now it was in its infancy & was very expensive to develop & you couldn’t buy it off the shelf like you can now. If it was that simple Holden would of put it on factory. That didn’t come until the VN.
I wholeheartedly think an improvement. Brocky would love that you've invested in this latest tech for such a gorgeous machine.
you put it in the moonlight!
I met Mr Brock on the set of a Holden add back in the day. Hung out all day. At lunch he hung with the crew and caterers and was on first name terms with everyone. Even sat on an Eski to eat and when offered a chair ..." No thanks mate, you're right "
From the way he spoke about his daily at the time, I would think he'd approve of mods that improve and make a vehicle easier to use/get the most from. Obviously I cant"t speak for someone else , but that's my two cents.
Improved it for sure. New tech can do wonders on old school engines
Personally I think you've done a great job trying to keep it original.... I reckon to each their own
As long as you keep Brock's "Magic Energy Crystal" in the car who cares. If it keeps the car on the road, good on you!
Great stuff PB would approve the VL will run like a dream now...
You've improved a classic. After spending many hours as a teenager fiddling with the screws on a carburetor trying to get my motorbike to run properly, I'm very happy to be able to make the same changes with a laptop now.
I got stuck on the ignition 360deg out on a new build for hours 😂 Finally found a forum post that explained what you did and was like duh, added 360 and it started instantly.
Improved it. EFI and ECU's improve any engine. No water in distributor issues, no blocked jets or gunked up carbs, acurrate time etc all make an engine more user friendly.
I didn't know about gooch solar charging the polariser.......you gents are a fount of knowledge and wisdom!!!
Can't remember Brocky being a car collector but I do remember him being a modifier in search of performance.
Watching Al talk is like me trying to understand the crazy professor from back to the future. I don't understand but I enjoy watching. The owner would be filled with joy I bet! Good job boys
Quadrajets are bloody awesome, mine worked flawlessly after i rebuilt it on my 1978 5ltr VB SLE 5 speed manual.
The adjustability is fantastic.
Starts first time every time in winter, economical...and the glorious sound when those secondaries open up. 🇦🇺
took a few hollys off boat engines, put a fixed quadrajet on and they were amazed at the better performance and mainly fuel economy.
........My 1982 F100 XLT 4WD I bought new came with Canada351, C6 auto, "traction locker" rear factory-braced, independent front with "limited slip", AND a Quadrajet. On first service I had a "callback" and they replaced the front axle assembly, something about "right hand drive correction" for Australia. I loved that truck. Sold it when "the experts said my daughter had scoliosis and needed a "body-cast". At the last moment the "bloody experts" changed their mind, but my truck was gone, bastards.
I didnt mind my quaddie but the drivability of EFI is just so much better, The quaddie with a cam that starts working the same time the secondaries start to open was not nice.
@@ae86rally
The secondaries were adjustable to when they opened and could compensate for a lumpy cam.
I did this on my 308 (bored to 5.2ltrs) with Brock heads and a lumpy Crow cam.
It took some fiddling but I sorted it out, my car being a manual helped somewhat too.
And I have the honour of cleaning out Sutton's Chullora of all their Quady parts. 🙂🇦🇺
@@johno9507 I like what your saying as there nothing wrong with the Quady or even a Holley if you know how to tune them as they have a amazing fuel metering system if you know how to tune them . Not taking away with what the boys have done as its what is the go these days . Did they wreck a good car by putting EFI on it ? No they havent . I would love to see a decent tuner that knows both set ups and it would show just how good the Quady really is .
As usual, spot-on mix of what/how/why information in a well-paced episode.
Great upright bass sounding chill beats too.
Also, cheers for the advice on re-aligning a Polarizer. I'll start practicing on my front driveway.
Nice work. Definitely an improvement in my eyes.
Being of a similar vintage to Al, I remember when Brocky came out with that magic box and everyone thought that the cheese had slid off his cracker!
Yep, agreed. Definitely shook my head in disbelief when I heard about that one!
Although Al has worked out how to "Realign" it so it should be good!
I was knee high to a grasshopper then but I do remember wondering why Brockie kinda just vanished.
Improved it, good to see people still moding classic cars, it will run better and so on 👌🏼
100% Brocky approved!
A nice improvement.still sounds old school.
By making it far more reliable & increasing its longevity, you definitely improved it.
It will now able to be enjoyed by many more people for years to come.
The beauty of owning a car is you can do whatever you want to it! Purists be damned. Great content boys, keep it up.
Definitely going to improve both efficiency and performance as well as reliability. Overall if Brocky was still around I reckon he would approve.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE VIDEO
Sir Peter of the Brocky would definitely approve 👌
I would say even mister Leno (if his opinion is anything to go by) would approve of these upgrades. He doesn't shy away from modifying even the rarest classic to make them more usable. And in the end that's what it's all about right. No use if it's just looking pretty sitting in the garage. personally I'm all for it, would love to do this to a classic one day.
Normally, on an historic vehicle like this Id say wrong move - but not this time.
Considering that the car was already non-standard, you just made it a craptonne better!
Note to the editor: The squeaky toy sounds never get old, cracks me up every time lol
Total improvement. Carbs can be good if you know what you're doing, but efi makes all of the boring things like starting it and sitting in traffic easier.
Massive improvement......not ruined plus you can now run e85..... so even more power 👍
As you guys know I’m a VL Calais person and I think you’ve done this old girl a massive favour. If EFI wasn’t better then HSV wouldn’t have done it for the “Walkinshaw” VL
Definitely improved it. Cheers, Paul
Improved, anyone who disagrees and isn’t watching this on a crt monitor using dialup internet is a liar. Thanks to BOM for that analogy
This is my dream car, it was the sort thing on magazine covers around the time I got my license and I’m happy to see it punching on.
I lived and worked on cars thru the 70's to the late 90's and I know as much as I love the sound of a carb the car is a lot better off with fuel injection no matter what anyone says . it will run better and make more power plus the tunability of the engine is a lot better
So this is why I watch channels like your's: to find out about stuff like drive by wire throttle bodies that bolt directly on a manifold that used to have a carburetor. If you keep telling me about that kind of junk, I'll keep watching. Cheers.
Improved it , liked the application of the e throttle and how it all came together
absolutely improved
Such a pleasant bloke to listen to, the knowledge is outstanding
Undeniably an improvement.
Nothing too radical, just making use of better parts and tech
Oh Man!! That sounds angry
sweet music to the ears
Brock would approve for sure.
fantastic use of the holley ssr.. none of that 240v garbage
Defo improved it. Carbs are fit for museums only. Great work guys. Sounds killer 😳
He is a loathsome offensive brute, yet I can't look away.🙂
It's definitely in spirit with what Brock would have done as he was actually involved in the restoration and efi engine swap with a vc hdt.
"This is a special one off Brock Commodore built by Peter Brock and Sydney TAFE students as a Street Machine prize in 1999. Using a genuine VC Brock, TAFE and PB updated the car with a striking paint and trim combo, rebuilt the original VC block with later model heads and fuel injection (355 stroker, 400HP), Harrop brakes and Bilstein uprated suspension and added a 4 speed auto. A one off car for the collector. Truely the last true Peter Brock built car ever. Gold Coast car"
Definitely improved it, build your car your way
Biiiiiiig improvement, I can't believe how snappy it revs with that set up, very impressive!
Evolve or die is my motto, so big thumbs up from me, cheers fellas.
You guys didn't ruin a classic you just improved it by keeping it a holden v8 an ls would have went away from the classic vibe👌 also Al your wiring work is flawless👍
It all comes down to personal choice
Definitely improving the vehicle
That wiring looks almost as good as my P.C. I built. Love all your hard work and video. 😇🤗 keep it going, always.
Improvement. I've been researching a TBI upgrade for my '75 GMC truck, trying to keep the original engine bay looks over the efficiency of MPI. Mostly for increased fun time, less downtime, and just to bump up the modern jump in and go factor in a classic.
Agree. Had a 71 Chevelle Nomad with a 305 TBI once. No performance vehicle, but a good cruiser. Really loved the IAC on the throttle body, and how it allows you to just reach in and have it idleing flawlessly no matter what the temperature or weather!
@@ChristopherHallett Yeah, the 7747 ECM is from the stoneage compared to most newer stuff. Worked perfectly with the TH700 and highway miles.
Brocky would approve, go the iron lion!
Any engine liberated from it's Quadrabog is a better engine! Improvement for sure, just put all old parts on the shelf (scrap bin) for the future collector, and just enjoy the improved everything.
Thankyou for taking time to explain. I did the same thing on my old bmw ecu install. Although I wasn't as confident and tested everything on the car and got it running before adding sheaths and heat shrink hah. Maybe if I did it again I'd be more confident..
When Al was explaining the taint procedure for realignment...I was half expecting Woody to say...are we gonna film that! lol Seriously though..car runs much better, yet retains the old school cool looks of the central air filter and cowl induction. Great episode guys.
Of course he would approve its all the newest tec thats one thing Brocky loved to do with cars Innovation and improvements
Definitely improved. Keeping it more reliable to keep it on the road is always an improvement, and keeping it looking mostly stock is a bonus.
You guys are amazing! I am in awe of Al's wiring skills!
youve definlately made it better, i recently converted my lj torana to EFI and it was the best thing ive ever done to it
Perfect OEM plus deal on a classic to be able to enjoy it more. Well done on the quality of video and sound. It’s right up there now lads 👌🏻
A definite improvement great work yet again fellas 👍
Top job Lads !!
Improved. 100%.
Love you have done with this. I thought about putting in a fuel injection throttle body engine in my vk Holden I owned 25 years ago and my HG premier I have in the back shed. You cant ruin a car by modernising it. You are only making it better
Tasteful technology upgrades!! Well done boys! Well done 👍
Wicked car, good to see it get some modern love. This is my favourite Chanel by far, would love to come and work with you blokes
Bloody awesome. Sounds amazing. Improved not ruined. Eventually everything needs to be replaced or else is a museum piece.
Fantastic idea, Better than stock. Good One.👍👍
Definately an improvement. Great car. Well done guys.
Definitely an improvement. There’s always room for improvement 💪
you guys have definitely made it better ... sounds so good .. can't wait to see it on the dyno.
Absolutely improved it yet kept the original look (mostly). Nice work!
100% improved. Nice work guys
New and improved it will make it nicer and therefore more enjoyable to drive! Winning!!
Good job boys!!
Enjoying the backing music. Nice one
You've done a really nice job of this one lads. Well done.
Definitely an improvement but done with respect for the heritage of the car. A nice balance indeed.
