The fact that this movie was overlooked at the Oscars is a direct vindication of everything this movie was saying. People who watch this movie 25 years from now will not know or care who won the Academy Award in 2014, but this movie will still speak to many of them in a way no "appreciation award" can ever define.
TanukiDigital well said my friend.. Props to my friend that told me this movie does exist.. I haven't watch it, but i can feel how deep and good this movie is gonna be. Can't wait to see it..!!
@@RR-qv8uz Dare you to talk to me like that in person. Stop being such a keyboard warrior. If you’d seen and understood the film you’d know that the whole point in this scene was that Llewyn couldn’t get a break when others were writing drivel and getting an element of success.
Oh my goodness Carrey Mulligan. I am so in love with her. She has the incredible ability to play such convincing, heartbreakingly melancholy characters but when she smiles it is so fucking disarming and genuine.
Such a perfect way to describe it. I watched it for the first time last night and immediately thought it was good. Then I couldn't fall asleep because I kept thinking about it. Now I think it was great.
It's an incredibly sad movie, like really hits you in the feels. He did everything right, good musician, dedicated but he was thrown out. Really is a parallel to us all I think.

Love the way Isaac turns his head to the audience when they start singing along. It's like,"What the hell? They're singing along to THAT!? Man, what a bunch of dweebs."
Yep. So many comments about how much people love the song… they’re missing the point. It’s a bang average song with dreadful lyrics yet people seem to like it, just as people liked Please Mr Kennedy and Troy Nelson as a whole, despite how little talent they really had. Llewyn was far more talented, but couldn’t catch a break, leaving him with a chip on his shoulder.
A terrific OST and song. It’s a crime not to have a vinyl reissue of this song or album. Rough Trade / RSD or Nonesuch should take initiative to produce a vinyl re-release!
Even though a great many critics loved this movie, it did not get the Oscar nomination it deserved. It had special meaning for me since I spent many evenings in the Village folk clubs back in the day. In this scene, Llewyn is watching a trio which (in real life) became Peter, Paul and Mary. He had turned down a chance to be part of this group.
That is not true, them performing is not what would be peter, paul and mary. They existed elsewhere in the movie (and reality), which Llewyn did decline the offer to join. But this trio is not them
Such a choen brothers movie, this FILM gets better every time i see it. Folk music is lucky to have these performers. Timberlake is the best in this film! everything is great, from the music the actors the lens the shots, great all around!!
I had never noticed that when she sings "Lord I cannot go back home this a'way," she looks directly at Llewyn. I might be looking too much into the scene but that's a potent detail to add.
Great, great find. I also love Lou N's reaction when he give an understated shrug and mouths, "What?" "And some of the guys come in here because they want to ____ Jim"
One of the many reasons why the best movie of the year won't be represented at the oscars come Sunday. Shame this one went right over most people's heads.
Watched the movie over the weekend and the longer it stews in my brain, the more I love it. I mean, I did just Google Jim & Jean for goodness sakes. My heart just completely breaks for Lou N. Davis. Great collection of eccentric characters, as usual for the Coens. “Me? Just Jean.”

Regardless of whether you like the film or not, you need to admit the character of llewyn is insanely well-developed
I think there is a little love story between Jean and Llewyn. The gazes during this song...the sacrifice done by Jean to sleep with the club owner in order to get Llewyn a gig...Llewyns "I love you"...

The significance is that the characters had the lucky charm that inspired the audience to join in, unlike Llewyn. But yea, it was a very common song back then.
This was also common for this type of old folk song people did not so much preform it as much as trying to have a group sing along with them , that was much of the folk scene these types of songs were communal as opposed to personal performance motivated Eddie Black

This film was the best of 2013. What a shame that it did not get the accolades it so deserved. Oscar Isaac was sadly overlooked as well. Shameful.

Beautiful song!
This is THE cinema of the emotions. Thanks forever brothers Coen!!!
Justin gives a lovely tone to the song. 💖 😍
Very good movie with great music. I love folk so when I saw this I was so happy. this is my favorite song in the movie

When I was in Labrador, age 19, I used to hear this song and think, " only 500 miles, piece of cake '.
Justin is such an amazing singer
I had never noticed that when she sings "Lord I cannot go back home this a'way," she looks directly at Llewyn. I might be looking too much into the scene but that's a potent detail to add.
Yeah, that's actually on purpose, it's written into the screenplay that Jean looks at Llewyn during her verse.
Great, great find. I also love Lou N's reaction when he give an understated shrug and mouths, "What?"
"And some of the guys come in here because they want to ____ Jim"
If you listen to the words in her verse, it describes Llewyn really well, definitely near the part where she does that.
Completely intentional. Llewyn also gives her a look like "wat da fak?" in the scene immediately after
lmao Llewyn even gives her the "the fuck are you looking at me for?" reaction
I have never heard a song with so much soul in it. Im not a native english speaker but the depth is deeper than marina trench ❤️
rajesh desi like the entire movie carries Dave van Ronk's soul, so does this song.
Justin Timberlake is talented and no doubt he had an awesome voice. He acted well too in the movie like Alpha dog.

I agree. This movie, the acting, and the musical direction were all overlooked. ...and a Disney song wins. Go figure that!

I love Carey Mulligan. I love her accent. she is the best actress at this time but she has no movie in 2016 and no chance for next year.
I guess she's back to drama on stage isn't she? Her tender voice in performance hears like magnet irresistible to the cold iron me.
The actor playing the bar owner is the same one who played in The Sopranos. He's so funny in this movie.

Can someone explain the significance of the entire audience joining in? Was this song a folk anthem of sorts in the early 60's?

This was a sign-along song in the 60's. The audience used to sing along when Joan Baez sung it, and then she would sing harmony over them.

Joan Baez, Peter, Paul & Mary, and others......was one of the hundreds and, in some cases, thousands, who sang along......
