  • Azulejo is a form of painted tin-glazed ceramic tile work. It is an integral part of Portuguese culture. The word azulejo is derived from Arabic, meaning "polished stone." The tiles could be seen everywhere in Portugal, such as churches, palaces and even train stations. China's influence can be found in some Portuguese tiles. In the late 17th century, blue-and-white tiles were fashionable in Portugal, and the color was influenced by imported Chinese porcelain.
