Raising a puppy is no joke. It has nothing to do with the Insta-fantasy of dog ownership we see everywhere. Here are some of the highs and lows I've experienced in the first week of living with my 9-week-old puppy, Vilk.
P.S. We're doing well, I think, and I'm supporting him as he grows and learns about the world around him. Love this little guy 🐺

This video is very honest. Yes, I could tell you it’s been a breeze, all rainbows and butterflies, and only show the really good parts. But I chose not to do that, because I like to think you’d prefer me to be honest about the ups and downs.
Unfortunately not everyone in the comments seems to understand that. That’s fine - maybe you’ve never had a dog or maybe you prefer to only see perfection on social media. You can keep your judgment to yourselves 🙏
And if you have felt some of what I’m feeling - I see you! I feel you! And from what I hear, it does get better ☺️ So much love even in the tough times!! ❤️

You’re doing amazing! When I found Camper and brought him into the Prius I cried at least once a week at least for the first 6 months! It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, taking him in, training him, teaching him he’s not alone in the wild anymore, and truthfully he is still a challenge but I can tell you this… he was 100% worth the blood (literally hahah from squirrel chasing off cliffs & big falls hahah), sweat and tears! The challenging moments become some of the happiest moments. You have a best friend and a pal for life. As a person that has owned several dogs, let me just say this. Vilk seems like a good puppy. Soon you will be able to take him on your runs. I encourage you to get him started ASAP. As much as you travel, it can only benefit you to have him with you at all (most) times. As he matures, he will become your best friend and guardian. Loyalty is what you will eventually end up with, with Vilk. And on a positive note, the runs will make him want to crash afterwards giving you a new time slot to edit your post's 🙂

@Greg B - she is. It is a slow process, and both side are learning to read each other. Some people overthik this too much. At the end, this is an animal you have to take care of, protect if you have to, a member of your "family". Also driven by instincts in a lot of cases, so you have to remember that too. And dogs are good at reading a body language too, the same with most animals, even facial expressions, tone of the voice, and so on. They will know if you are excited, upset, happy.
At the end... the puppy is responsibility too. And you have to know that at the end. It will all gets better. Taxing experience after few days/weeks? Nah. Not even close. For him, for the puppy you will be there for all of his/her life. And you will be there where the dog/cat/any other animal will die too. And you have to be there for it, at this moment. But for you it will be just a short part of your life. So learn from that. And in a way, learn from each other.
      Edit: grammar

I'm 42 and have always had Malinois since I was elementary age. Two that were mine and that I always raised from 7, 8 weeks puppies (my parents were products of the 70s and 80s, and loved animals, my dad got first Malinois male (Flap, import from France) when I was 6 and I made it mine, it was my dog, he got a female (Katie) and made that one mine too (constantly with me where I went, spoiled em), then on in my family the Malinois were always mine). Got two now (one under my feet/desk, the other plopped against side of my chair). I miss their puppy days, for the most part - but Malinois, being Malinois, and I hated caging mine (I'd be gone, 8, 9, 10, however many hours at work and I hated the idea of cooping them in a cage for all that time), so every set I've had destroyed a couple houses (and one college apartment) in their early years (doors - including sliding glass ones they learned how to take off the track, carpeting, walls, appliances, furniture). I'll do it again, and again, and again, till day I die. its just part of having dogs (at least the kind I get). They're always devoted and I'm used to them always being there, and I'll never give that up.

I came here to say essentially the same thing. Puppies ARE hard. That is IF youre actually doing the work. The good news is, all of that effort does pay off. Youre going to have a wonderfully bonded and focused dog who will be up for any challenge you put before him. The breed is brilliant, but yes a TON of energy. Thats great for you and your jogging though!
I have a large pair of dogs in our Fifthwheel fulltime (pretty much a similar RV and Layout to the one you saw in texas), and we DONT jog everyday... So we got lazy breeds. My wife worked SO hard with them as puppies and theyre pretty well trained. Theyre enjoying the life on the road.
I do know that German Shepherd dogs can be pretty people shy and not like strangers if theyre not socialized a lot early on. Perhaps thats the goal if youre more interested in personal protection, But sometimes a non-socialized dog can be a right pain in the butt. HAHA.
Good luck, Eva. Youre doing great!

  • @mirceaparvulescu7925
    @mirceaparvulescu7925 Před rokem +91

Hi, Eva. I would suggest you get a ramp or ladder for him to get in and out of Odyssey, he will be doing it at least 6 times a day, probably a lot more, it could damage his joints.
It is quite normal to feel overwhelmed, but to me it looks like you're doing fine so far :)
I would like to offer another advice, especially for having Vilk off leash, if no one else already suggested it: find a secure, fenced in spot (it can even be a house), stop near a tree or some big object, ignore him so he gets bored and starts to investigate around and, when he's not looking at you, hide behind the tree. His eye sight is poor, so you don't have to be invisible. When he'll realize he lost you, he will panic a bit and start to search for you. Preferably wait for him to find you and, when he does, make a big deal out of it: treats, toys, ball, etc.; if he can't find you and you see him take off in some direction, call him back, before he gets too far, so he doesn't get lost or something (this is why it is important to be in a secure area, where he can't actually get lost), and then try again. Do this a lot, in as many places as you can.
This will teach him that, if he's too focused on other things, he will lose you, so he will begin to keep a close eye on you, you should find it more and more difficult to actually get away from him, which in turn will mean that he will not get lost or something on a hike, HE will the one keeping track of you, and making sure you don't "escape".
Hope this helps ! Good luck with the little one :)

I am 73 and had dogs all my life, best advice I have always followed is.
Ignore bad behaviour but generously reward good behaviour with love and treats especially when puppies.
Never "punish" a dog with physical abuse, or isolation, as it will only manifest as aggression or nervousness, just be firm but fair with your voice if he steps out of line, and reward him immediately when he does the right thing. That way he will respect you as his pack leader and WANT to do the right things and follow you to the end of the earth.
Socialising with other dogs while a puppy is also very important, so they learn the boundaries of play and manners to older dogs etc.....the majority of dogs are very good and very quick to work out the boundaries...if they are allowed to.
My current15 year old Lakeland/Irish Terrier cross (Frodo) is the best companion I have ever had, so well behaved that sometimes it is almost embarrassing, and gives unconditional love back six fold.....even does therapy rounds at the local old peoples Care Home
Looks like you have already formed a close bond, and as fellow travellers he will love it you will soon be inseparable.

I have a soon to be 15 year old bushland terrier who is also ridiculously well behaved, except for 2 things. He occasionally goes nuts if kept away from a dog he wants to smell. He is obsessed with the smell of hazelnut ice-cream and will try anything on his power to get it. He jumps on chairs, tables, flings himself at us & generally forgets how well behaves he normally is 🤣
Apart from that he's socially astute, quiet, asks to go the toilet, is very loving and has a keen eye on the patterns of the day. Stuff like getting his toy bear and bringing him upstairs to his bed when he feels it's time for the family to go to sleep. He is a huge personality in a small sturdy body

Echoing so many comments here, but raising a dog is possibly the most difficult thing I've done! I thought I was prepared from having a dog growing up, I thought I did enough research. But I was crying almost every day some weeks with our puppy. It's an enormous adjustment when you're used to your routines and day to day life. You're doing great and I'm glad you found some comfort from reddit and a trainer to reassure you. (And to anyone else out there struggling with a pup, please find a local trainer, please reach out to people! You don't need to beat yourself up about it and suffer alone.)

Having spent most of my life with German Shepherds Dogs (GSD's) I can tell you that the things that make them a lot of work and that cause challenges when they are puppies are the same things that make them intelligent, faithful and the best companion a person could ask for. Puppyhood is a small part of their life and believe me, you'll look back on this time with great fondness and find yourself wondering how it went by so quickly. The best part is that they seem to retain the qualities that make them so adorable and loveable as puppies throughout their entire life. Enjoy the puppyhood for as long as you can.

Hang in there. Getting a puppy is a lot of work, especially with a working line GSD! But it’s worth it and it does get easier. I’ve always compared it to having a new born for that first little while. You’re both doing great and before you know it, it won’t seem like work anymore and you will have yourself the most loving, loyal best friend as a companion. I look forward to seeing your progress together!

We talked about maternal bones and decided we are alike. Ours are for puppies! Sweet to hear you say you are on constant look out for him not find ways to do injury to himself! I still have 3 of his siblings so it's all day making sure they stick tight with me on the farm so I know what they are doing. His other siblings are doing swell chasing mops and following the wee kiddos around. But girl when you went jogging while we boated the lake with him, I wish could have seen the separation anxiety on your face twice! I know without a doubt you love him! You are a good dog trainer, too! He's doing great with his commands. Wherever you are you know this is you and Vilks second home. Safe travels!

Now Luka is 10 years old, we did indeed have countless incredible walks and adventures together and I look forward to many more.

I've raised working line GSDs I know what you are going through. You can do it, and it'll be worth it. The first year is tough, and a steep learning curve but you will end up with the smartest most loyal companion ever. I've raised other types of dogs and worked in animal shelters. Working line GSDs are different and other dog owners wouldn't get it. Join a local schutzhund club, they will help you a lot! Also it will be a good chance to socialize him, it's so important to get lots of socialization in at this age so they don't grow up aggressive towards unusual people or dogs due to fear later.

Just like you, we seriously underestimated the time and effort and patience involved. Owning a dog is a tremendous responsibility. It is a both a time commitment and an emotional commitment. Traveling with my 2 dogs right now . Took them down from my motel room at 7am to go out . Went back to my room. Found a tick in the bed that the dogs brought back in . Make sure he is treated for fleas and ticks . Try to take him out every 3 or 4 hours . For the type of traveling you are doing he will be a great body guard . Training takes time and consistency. A little bit at a time many times a day . Dogs learn from just being around you . If you are calm they will stay calm . They can read your moods . Best of luck and don’t get frustrated . He will pick up on that .

You just have to be more exciting than what ever your dog is focusing on. Bring his favorite toy and a pocket of treats. Always be practicing on your dog's recall training. First with a long leash and eventually off leash. Without a strong recall you put your dog in danger from other dogs or traffic, or other animals in nature. Training always has to be number 1 even when they are old as the always need to be sharp and attentive to you as alpha. Dog pack mentality is how you have to see your relationship as, not buddy buddy. That's when things get tough with a dog.

Eva, for whatever it's worth, perfection is a goal, not a destination. My mother didn't or couldn't understand that and it destroyed her from the inside out. She was never satisfied with herself or those around her. And it made her a bitter, angry, and spiteful person. What you're going through right now is normal, whether it's with a puppy, kitten, or a human baby. ESPECIALLY a human baby. You end up having to put the rest of your life on hold for a while as you get this new life up on it's feet and prepared for the world. Once you get past this, things will get back to normal. But don't let it make you question who you are. Just try to look for the light at the end of that tunnel where you'll have a long-time companion who will also have your back.
