Mmh. This didn't make so much sense to me.
Because the question still remains, why follow a specific religion if you want to connect more to God/Allah / that which is Greater than us...?
Why can't I find my own way to it? Why is a book necessary in the 21st century?

Islam is not a "religion". If we understand that phrase, it will help us a great deal.
