  • Sorry about the late video today guys and gals, we had an issue with the original upload.
Anyway welcome to our video on how braking incorrectly can be dangerous. In this video I'm teaching my wife the pitfalls of braking incorrectly, and how you brake properly.

Hi fella, well done on a decent vid and always good to see new people coming in to motorcycling and learning technique. One thing to mention to your wife though is that she has been told the braking order wrong, she should be doing most of her initial, higher speed braking with the front brake and then transferring to the back brake at lower speeds, not the other way round. Front brake should be avoided as much as possible at low speeds, particularly when turning.👍

Leaving the clutch In a emergency stop is helpful as you gain engine breaking.

Emergency braking is a perishable skill which we ALL need to practice more. Needs to be practiced DAILY.
As you develop a feel for the front brake you develop the muscle memory you'll call on in an actual emergency. For that reason alone it's worth practicing whole hand. The drills take away the risk of locking up so you don't have to compromise the maximum achievable brake effort.

I already use two fingers for braking but I use my middle fingers whilst keeping my pointer finger and my little finger on the throthel.

I'm not 100% on the two finger thing... Every instructor I've trained with has insisted on whole hand. Even the book the IAM teach to mentions it should be whole hand.
I find that it does give me more power if needed, but at the same time I'll only use one or two when trail braking into bends

The reason people use 2 fingers is because you can brake slower and not panic brake and go over.

@@WillHoward2002 Most big bikes don't really "go over", if you panic you'll lose grip on the front before that happens.
That said, this is still an issue of control more than anything else. Control you should have over all of your fingers, such that if you ever do need the power, it's available to you, but you can still exercise the finesse required.

Where did she do her CBT? I don't think those people are qualified to instruct new riders...
