Would you give your bike a custom paint job? 👇
I already have 4 bikes with custom paint jobs, but had them done professionally. Yours looks awesome. I am thinking of doing something with a Banshee Rune V2 I recently bought used. I like the bare aluminum look these days, so might do that. The blasting tip was spot on. Thanks!!
I'm in the process of gathering everything nicely to repaint one or two frames soon (a vintage road and a Stoic2), I'm quite scared because it's really not my thing but your video reassures me a little, thank you !
Bought an ebike
Stripped it down, squirted it with black matte Tremclad and a year later it looks like it did after day 1.
Not the paint of choice for most but what I had on hand. No priming, no sanding or wet sanding in between. I did it outside in the sun in a 10x10 screen tent so there wouldn't be any dust or debris stick to the paint while it was drying.
6 very thin and even coats over 2 days and it looks amazing.
I'd do it again. Had a blast doing it myself, so I am bias but think it is a good way to do it if you are a true amature like myself.
Supply issues mean my fork came in shiny black and it should be matte to match the frame. It seams like a pretty basic job with a buffing and a respray but any pointers would be great. Love a good alloy hardtail. Wish my body would let me ride them. Thanks
I gave my kids bike a paintjob: watch?v=keJX_r1YBhM
I have done a pretty good amount of spray painting and I can tell you the #1 most important part of any paint job is preparation. Be obsessive while prepping and if you have done your homework on which paint to use and how to apply it….you will be SO happy you did it yourself. Very satisfying. Since bikes are outside so much, I would use a 2K clear that is automotive grade. It will resist UV fading. Never paint without a respirator and in a well ventilated place. Painting over paint, you need to use a primer, bare metal use a etching primer. If you have never painted before, paint something else first to get the feel for it. Temperature is critical for dry time, read the can. I soak my cans in hot water 15min before I paint and I don’t set them on concrete in between coats it will suck the heat from the can. If you make a mistake, don’t sweat it. Let it dry and lightly LIGHTY sand that area and repaint it. Painting is very satisfying, but VERY time consuming.
CZcams has hours of how to paint videos.
Get out there and paint! Lol
nice tip there,Todd!🤘
@@bongers94 thank you!🙏
I think this applies to any job you're going to do, preparation is the key to success.
The rest of the tips you have written though are spot on, great advice!
Thanks for the advices!
Always like to read the comments on these videos. Lots of little details I wouldn’t think like setting the can on concrete.
That's actually a pretty impressive paint job. I think this stands out as a "less is more" solution!
That yellow Scotland frame in the shop with the saltire and lion looked DOPE!
Well done Rich. Can't wait to see the build.
Neither can we! It looks great already!
I want to see some pro mechanic ASMR Build please 🥺🥺🥺
I agree way better than when Henry did his raw look
I do it on my HT too... Is a lot of work but the best feeling to ride you own unique color 🙌🏻
As a professional aircraft paint sprayer myself you've given me some really cool ideas I could do with my frame I have gravity fed spray guns and a place to do it I even have access to paint stripper now to settle on scheme and colour
Nice job for first time round 👏 👍 👌
Nice one Rich, frame looks ‘legit’ 😉. What I love about the vid is you have perfectly captured what DIY painting should be… FUN 😁. It’s all about grabbing an old frame (normally) getting creative and having fun.
I particularly love it when your taking the stencils off…. All the emotions of a painter right there! It’s the moment you get to find out if all the work has payed off and also the moment when you can so easily give yourself a whole load more work if you mess it up!
Great job mate 👍
I just dabbled in vinyl wrap on my bike. Looks pretty good. I like the paint job though
Excellent video guys, keep em coming! I too have dabbled in painting bikes, but really suck at using rattle cans, even when trying extremely thin layers and multiple layers and have ended up mostly using brushes and cheap tins of paint from low end hardware type stores (£2-£5 tins from b&m for example) and an inordinate amount of wet sanding sanding between inordinate number of coats. Which is why I was surprised that this vid didn't talk at all about sanding between coats (I assume there was none) and whether the drying time was a) Followed and b) Adjusted for the lower temperatures than most rattle can manufacturers recommend, that the UK so blesses us with.
But it has inspired me to try again with rattle cans when it's a little warmer. I have a 2017 cube aim pro frame in orange where it's been sat in strong sun (before I bought it) and faded most of the colour to acid yellow unevenly along the frame. But, I'm waiting til it's a little warmer, the highlands of Scotland ain't often forgiving...for more than 5 minutes at a time.
Number 1 priority this time will be a better keying.
Super nice Rich!
Thanks very much!! I am waiting for my used frame that I just buy. So I am going to paint it my self. Great video, LOVE that FINISH!!!
Nice one!
I once gave a car the rattle-can treatment.
I think it has about 5 coats of lacquer with a sanding to flat down between each one. It came up really shiny after mopping, and looked great. People laugh when I tell them, but the proof is in the photos!
Watching this has got me thinking about an old frame in the garage...
The lion rampant painted frame is amazing
Nice job Rich, given me some ideas for my commuter which is in need of a respray. Love it!
I might end up doing this to my bmx bike. This came out so good!
Loved the energy in this vid!
I've painted (twice) my dad's first "mtb", a '92 Giant Rincon. Still going strong as the commuter bike, basically all modern components: 1x11 xt group, mavic tubeless wheelset, etc. Kinda want to paint it again with a simple pink, just to be different lol
Splatters look dope!
Might be spraying a little closely to the frame. Personally, I did like 4 quite light coats of each color that I was using, and a last heavier coat. Gives a better glossy finish in my experience. (yes, clear coat will help that a lot too)
Righty-dokey richie! What an awesome job. Would love to convert my current hardtail to a DJ/pumptrack bike once I upgrade to a proper bike. Got me inspired on doing a cool paint job on it. Don't know if I care enough, but at least now I know it would be possible. Thanks! Love to see the final build
I was actually respraying my Demo8 frame this weekend. I basically followed this step by step without even knowing it. Ha! Your frame looks awesome. Hoping mine turns out looking as good.
Great video Rich as always!!
Are you taking bookings my paint work is a little shabby mate 🤣👍🏾👀
Pretty Cool Rich! Nice work!
tha came out super clean man love it
if your doing paint prep in the kitchen, I'd recommend making sure the misses is out of town for a couple days
You should put some Rockshox Pike forks on it in silver - good job on the paint I wasn’t too sure about spray paint that looks well good 👍
That sounds like a great idea! 🔥
The best paint is no paint. Raw aluminium finish is beautiful, doesn't chip, and can easily be "refreshed" if needed.
Raw frames are so good looking! 👍
I agree, raw aluminium looks simple yet classy."raw" carbon looks good too, just a clear coat so you can still see the carbon weave underneath.
How can you do that? Just cleaning the frame and than spray on a finish coat? That's it?
ANSWER ME!!!🤣🤣🤣
So let me get this straight... you watched a video on how to repaint your bicycle but prefer it without paint? 🙄🙄😒
That is sweet, I would do a charcoal gray with black and silver specs, but each is their own.
Amazingly well done!
13:40 next door’s conservatory windows getting some overspray
YES !! FINALLY a repainting clip
Great video Rich!! Those are some great tips for beginners mate!! Even though I've never painted anything😅!!
Thanks dude 👊
That looks RAD! Great job !!
.. looking good ... definitely going to do this in the future !
For a can spray your bike looks really good. Thanks for the ideas.
Oh my god I've been waiting for this video for like 3 years
2k clear is a must if you want it to be like a factory finish. 2k has a hardener in it. Otherwise the paint job will never last. I’ve done many bikes and most people think it factory paint even after years of use. I also use a 2k epoxy primer on any bare metal.
That’s so cool, such a good vid. Would love to get my frame sprayed
Always thought about painting my bike 🤷♂️maybe it’s somthing I’ll do in the future
Watch the video, learn the tips & tricks and give it a go!! :)
@@gmbn sure will. Thanks guys!
That looks pretty sweet!
Awesome job!
Awesome job... thanks
Thanks for the great tutorial Rich! The bike looks great! Did you do any sort of sanding between coats?
nice bike frame and paint job.
Bikes are pretty easy to take apart with the right tools ,alternatively you can mask up with heavy plastic and prep it fully assembled ,although some areas won't be accessible ,maybe a bit sand paper glued to a knife mite work for these areas ,Been a painter for 20 years ,the process is the same ,strip ,sand, filll ,sand again clean ,degrease x2 primer coats ,2-3 top coats ,2 coats clear (matting agents available) 2k paint is best for durability ,gun paint is also worth a look for silvers and matts
My frame was scratched chipped all over, so I stripped the paint and mirror polished it. Got it gleaming, then took it to the trails and scratched the funk out of it. Still looks awesome
Pretty awesome Rich! want to see the whole build ! :O
16:35 paint fumes have officially kicked in 😂
That looks sick, maybe a tour of the bikes that Paul has painted for some inspiration and maybe some techniques to get cool patterns like your splatter or a fade etc.
Omg I've been waiting for this video way too long PLSSSS DO MORE painting things on this channel🙏🙏I would love to learn more about spray painting bikes
Cheers man would love to do more, what else would you like to see painted ?
Maybe doing interesting or unque designs on a bike or even hydro dipping parts of the bike or even just tips in how to improve on painting g a bike on a budget just some ideas
Nicely done Mr.Payne! next please do a video on sandblasting😊
Nice paint 🎨 job looking good sow for 🤘
I love that when it came to the masking example and the tape example the gloves were off and the hands were on the frame 😂
That bike looks incredible! Amazing job, I think it looks sick mate
Danm I wanna try this
You can get 2K clearcoat that's way more resilient than normal clearcoat. The 2K mixes when you want by a special valve on the bottom of the rattle can.
Roll on build day, great paint by the way.....................✌
that looks super crisp! Wonder how much different it would be for a carbon frame....
Fire in the booth bro has taste
Can’t wait till my roadbike custompaintjob is Done
nice pair 👌
Nice job bud...watch etoe videos very informative in techniques and prep
I always struggle with how thick to lay on the coats and how long to wait between coats, which usually, OK, always leads to a crappy result. Man I suck at painting.
I always get creative and spray my own frames I always have done you know it's unique then it's good to not have what everyone else has got and have something that people look at and ask where do I get a bike like yours and u say u can't 😆
Rich has to grow out his Mustache now to match the bike. It looks sick though
In short, clean, prime, and use off the counter cans. Got it.
BEEN THEIR DONE ✔ THAT. 🤓🏍
Great video. Could one do this to a carbon frame and what would be the difference in prep and paint?
Same thoughts, I have a matte black carbon frame and I'm not sure if I should follow the same prepping process.
Nice! Now, YOU paint Blake’s van!
Beautiful - great work Rich!
Thanks for the support, Joel!
I'm thinking of repainting my TR Patrol carbon frame, any tips or tricks for the material?
How long did you wait to put on the clear after the red coat? Do I have to wait 24 hours or can I do it after an hour
What brand of clear coat do you used on the end?
#GMBN Hello and greetings from America! I was wondering if maybe there’s a chance for a video covering tips, things to look for and things to look out for when purchasing a used bicycle. With supply issues and the ever-rising cost of living, used bikes are a great option. Also, if #EMBN and #GCN could make a similar video, it would help even more people. Please and thank you. Love the channel!
My friend and I are thinking of getting matching colour bikes. His comes with a nice colour that i want to have on my bike. Is it worth painting mine?
Did you do an after and before weighing? That would be super interesting how much weight all the paint is!
Seth of Berm peek Express is my Inspiration of Painting my old bike. He posted a bike Paint Tuitorial guide on how to paint old bikes, parts and accessories (detailed, informative, and well explained). All of his flip bike restoration come out so good and better. Its something that is missing from this content.
Super cool but didnt you have to put some primer and base coat before the colour
Whats the difference between decals and stickers ans how do you know what to purchase??
Yeahh!! Please do it with a carbon frame
Painting my handle bars, and all goes well till the lacquer stage, the paint goes soft, after hours of dry its still soft. How do i get a clear tough final coat?
Where can I get those canyon stched 360 decals?
Random dumb question… should I wet sand between applying color & clear coats?
Would love to respray my giant fathom 2, but I have never painted a bike before and I am a bit scared incase it goes wrong, I would like some help with this please
The clear coat is a 2K-type?
I am going to paint this exact frame lol
Hey Jorge, Sounds awesome, make sure to update us on your work!
I am wondering, how do you apply color to the logos?
Very cool and such a sick job for a first attempt!
Nice idea with the splatter effect 🤔 how can I incorporate this into mine?
With paint...🤨🤯
Sorry mate, couldn't resist
Could do with a light sand after the main coat to remove the orange peel in the paint.
Get the BB faced for a perfect fit.
Buy paint stripper for aluminium frames. you just brush on n paint falls off, save hours of sanding, or take it to powder coaters for a dip in ther stripping tank. Spray paint outside you better cover it or dust flies n other crap will stick to it
Make a how to paint digital camo on bike video 👍🏽✌🏽
Wish I saw this a week earlier I painted my bike and it was ok but this would have helped me
Should've removed the decals before the clearcoat..at least that is what I'd have done. I'd also would've used 2k clearcoat. But good job nonetheless 👍
They were. The first clear coat had a glitter finish which I didn’t want on the bare metal so after I’d applied that all over I then I removed the decals and gave it a plain clear coat so the metal didn’t have a sparkly finish.
@@richardpayne5176 oh yeah, i forgot about that glitter. I stand corrected. Can't wait to see the build.
where can you get a stitched 360 frame raw like no paint
I painted a bmx frame red a couple years ago. And when I applied the clear coat it crackled the red. I would sand it down and try again a number of times. I tried research it about the other thing I could find was I wasn’t allowing the red tick cure but even when I waited like 2 1/2 weeks it’s still crackled it. I finally just put the red on and abandon the clearcoat, I was beyond frustrated and pissed off at that point. I’m still not sure why it did it like every time.
Highlight!
Can you show us how to do a carbon frame?
Paint my bike. You should paint my bike. Its a picture of thousand sunsets
Bahaha thanks for watching... me pee... that was gold👌
