He’s also stuck in an abusive relationship and those are tough to get out of safely.

Anna was crying when her boyfriend threw her out, she said, I have nowhere to go. Made me think of the bar, closing time, "you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here.".
I feel sorry for James and more so his girlfriend. I would bet money he hooked up with her and that's why they're friends. He may or may not have told his girlfriend about it.

Honestly, Arline reminds me of my first ex, and you know what I say? I don't regret breaking up with her. I don't care about the "I had a rough life" excuse. A rough life does not justify anything. Furthermore, if your loved one tells you to stop ignoring them even if you give them attention everyday and doesn't listen to you when you say, "This time is not convenient for me", then that is a clear sign that that relationship needs to end.
You've described an ex or two in my past. I couldn't love them enough. They were like bottomless pits of need. If I said I wanted time to myself, it entailed some kind of committee meeting to ensure that I will be thinking effusive, loving thoughts about them the whole time I am away. There were preemptive accusations and a lot of manipulative tears.........and holes in the drywall.
Then there were the "but we can't part company like this!"
