Maybe people are depressed because they have economic insecurity, which breeds its own issues, and are living in a world which rapes resources and exploits millions of people.

The disease was destroying his body and the Dr's were telling him he wasn't really sick his brain is just telling him he is. No wonder he had a mental breakdown.
