Anyone Can Climb Kilimanjaro: Tips and Tricks for Success

  • Climbing Kilimanjaro is not a thing for beginners. However, with some tips and tricks, the difficulty can be reduced a ton, and you'll surely summit the mountain. In this climbing Kilimanjaro documentary, we take the Lemosho route, which turned out to be a great idea.
    Our Bottom Line Up Front:
    - Kilimanjaro cost - we paid $1800. Some western owned companies charge up to $5000. We honestly did not see a difference between a local budget company that we booked with vs one of the expensive companies. We had great food, great people, and really enjoyed it.
    - In this video, you see the Lemosho route. It's the newest of the routes, and takes 7-9 days (we did it in 7). Some routes are faster, and thus more affordable, but the success rate plummits to 25-30% for the 4-5 day hikes. Lemosho has about a 90% success rate and is considered by far the most scenic.
    - The toilet sheds at each camp are disgusting. They are just holes in the ground. We paid an extra $50 per person for the private toilet and it will make your journey so much more enjoyable and comfortable - just spend the money and go for it.
    Kilimanjaro is truly an awesome thing to do, a bucket list item, there's nothing cooler than saying you've climbed one of the 7 peaks and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.
    More adventures to come!

    Totally agree on the toilet man. Best advice ever. Plus, JMHO, but I think that maybe because some Everest mountaineers proudly climb without canned oxygen, folks think the equivalent is climbing Kilimanjaro without Diamox. It's a daily pill (you actually begin taking a day or two in advance) and it's a pill which helps you acclimatize. I got to Uhuru at 52 years old in Aug, 2012 with the aid of Diamox.. I was down at the hotel, and I saw two young germans, apparently in great shape, but sadly hadn't summitted for the second time. I didn't ask about Diamox, but my guess is, they wanted to do it without Diamox and they had to try again. Again, JMHO.

      We climbed over New Years, we only had a day of light sprinkling rain, but our wet weather gear made it tolerable. I don’t think I would enjoy it as much if we had multiple days of rain, but an adventure can’t be planned too much and the struggle is part of the fun. We just prefer to struggle and be dry 😄

    This video is fantastic. If the covid leaves, I hope to go to Tanzania this year, and maybe try the Kilimanjaro. I loved the video. Very human, with expressions, fears and real enthusiasm. I confess that I was also thrilled at the end. By the way ... for someone who has vertigo, but always tries to overcome their fear ... Do you think the route (closer to the end) can become "blocking"? Thanks

    • @BottomLineUpFront
      @BottomLineUpFront  Před 3 lety +1

      I think you'd be absolutely fine! Kili is the adventure of a lifetime, most people can accomplish it if they believe they can, and the uncertainty of the challenge is what made it rewarding. The last day to the summit is most definitely painful; just one foot in front of the other is the only way!

      Anything that is a slow cardio muscle burn. Walking with a pack around the neighborhood, or put a treadmill on the highest incline and walk “up” for a couple hours. It’s definitely not a sprint, it’s all about slow and steady. The altitude is what gets most people, so we took a trip out to the mountains in the Midwest of America to get some experience at high elevations.

I took the Machame road in 5 days, the last day is very tiring and requires a very good physical condition. For the rest, it depends on your reaction to altitude. For example, say you’re in a group & you have 3 guides total (1 head guide, 2 assistant guides), if you need to turn around 1 guide will return with you and the other two guides continue & if more climbers need to turn around then one of the two guides who proceeded with the rest of the group will turn around.

      Hey George - we went with a company called Sirikwa. Since it's been a little over a year, I'm pretty certain they've increased their prices (maybe we've been getting them business). Then again, I bet most companies have increased prices by 10% or so as Kili is getting more and more popular. Regardless, it's totally worth it. For what it's worth, we paid about $1800 I believe (before tips) for our climb.
