- advancesflooring.com Second-round prospect and former Baylor big man Isaiah Austin announced Sunday that he has a condition known as Marfan syndrome which will end his dream of playing in the NBA. From Baylor's official statement:
Former Baylor center Isaiah Austin has been diagnosed with a career-ending medical condition. Genetic testing as part of preparation for the 2014 NBA Draft revealed that Austin suffers from Marfan syndrome.
"This is devastating news, but Isaiah has the best support system anyone could ask for, and he knows that all of Baylor Nation is behind him," head coach Scott Drew said. "His health is the most important thing, and while it's extremely sad that he won't be able to play in the NBA, our hope is that he'll return to Baylor to complete his degree and serve as a coach in our program."
Marfan syndrome is caused by a genetic mutation that leads to problems in connective tissues throughout the body. One feature of Marfan syndrome is aortic enlargement, which can be life-threatening. According to The Marfan Foundation, about one in 5,000 people have Marfan syndrome.

Breaks my heart man. He was the one guy I wanted to see prove everyone wrong in the NBA. Hope he turns into a coach one day
That would be awesome. Maybe his Baylor coach will bring him in.
Deshaun Jales he can play basketball again!!! Hopefully we can see him in the nba soon. All part of God's plan🙏🏽
This is real sad. I don't understand how this got past the Baylor medical staff
good question maybe there should be standard physicals and genetic to protect future athletes like the nba mlb and nfl currently have
It's one of those syndromes that is difficult to confirm. The only sure fire way to confirm that someone, who may show expressed symptoms of Marfan, has it is by genetic testing. It's not something doctors pay much attention to when someone appears to be healthy, until the heart has started to show the complications that come with the syndrome. These complications, which become present during childhood in most people who were diagnosed with Marfan, may become present later in life.
What an absolute sweetheart, I wish him all the best in life
You can tell the woman interviewing was holding back the tears God be with you.Amen
and now hes back and stronger💪Much Respect for this guy.
Alex LowPee just cause 1 doctor clears him doesn't mean he's 100%. I wonder how many doctors he went through until one finally cleared him to play.
Not a lot of things get to me, but I wanted to cry when he said he had a dream of being drafted.
I feel so sorry for this guy.Its so cruel just a few days before the draft
I have marfans and if you guys knew the side affects you would understand why he cant play.
I also have Marfans
+HYPeR ChaosS - PS3
You play cod bo3 ps4? And wow cool!
I too am a Marfy. I feel for this guy.
what the side affects
DatBoyFlash long arms tall in caved chest and flat foot
The way he expressed his experience was one of the most real things I've EVER heard. The fact alone that he would even do this interview is incredibly admirable.
people who don't understand marfans piss me off he cannot play if he continued to play he would die I have a 2 year old who has marfans this ain't a damm joke
He deserves to get drafted
And he get drafted by Adam Silver and the NBA. A kudos to the gesture.
Wow this is crazy!!!! I have the same condition. People need to know about this condition.
God bless.
Really? If "God" were real than why would he let such a horrible thing happen to this guy? First he's blind in one eye and than he finds out he has Marfan syndrome 4 days before his dream is about to come true. Like does God get a kick out of this or is it just all apart of his plan like all Christians say? Crazy that people still believe in God.
DoUEvenLiftBro bro your goina regret that..mark my words
DoUEvenLiftBro evil isn't God plan
DoUEvenLiftBro man I'm an atheist too. but no need to go off on a random person in the comments over something like that, you're just being petty.
God has a plan for everyone. This is a great example of not to take life for granite. 4 days away from his dream becoming reality and it was taken from him.
Wow I was just looking forward for Isaiah Austin to be drafted, that young man went through a lot but who knows what his future holds for him. God bless him
Heart goes out to you man.. keep ur head up & God bless!
He'll be blessed in another way.
thats too bad, NEVER EVER GIVE UP.
This Video Made Me Cry :'( . His Dream Was Just To Play Basketball. Love of the game. God Bless You.
I have marphan and I'm 37yrs old. I wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for my mom passing 15yrs ago.I'm 7foot 340lbs.Since my mom past I have had heart surgery and knee surgery.
Yes she did sir. At the time the doctors diagnosed her walking pneumonia. They never thought of it as Marfan's. Until they sent her to Wake Med where the doctors study that. Then it was to late for her. When she was on life support the doctors told me it would be a good idea for me to get checked. After all of this that was going on.
Im really sorry to hear that. My mom also passed away 9 years ago and recently the doctor checked my family history to see if i had Marfans and it turns out she had an eye cataract and she also died of a stroke and she was verly in her late 30's, both of these can be signs of Marfans. The doctors ended up telling me that i probably don't have it since i don't have hypermobile joints they are actually really unflexible, but i do have a problem with my joints and i can't do alot with them like lift heavy things or put pressure on them(do you have joint pain or problems?). Thanks for sharing.
All the time. My last doctors visit shocked me. He doubled my heart meds. Told me to start taking it easy. I hope u get the answers u looking for. God bless ya
Thank you! God bless you too
Shaun Tucker ....excuse my Confusion but how does the passing of your Mom relate to your surgeries?
My heart breaks for him but as he said, this is not the end, only the beginning. God bless him.
God bless this kid. Truly heartbreaking.

I am a big fan, you really inspired me and touch my heart, prayers goes out to you, God Bless. "This is not the end this is just the beginning" -Isaiah Austin
Well my wish came true! Adam Silver impresses me more and more each day #respect
Poor kid. That breaks my heart to see that happen.

This shows that this man is willing to put his life on the line for a sport he loves, and in the end he said sorry fans, I let you down. Respect earned

Im so sorry about that you are my favorite college basketball player.and I always want to play basketball for Baylor and ima try
I was diagnosed with Marfan last week, and i had a breakdown once i made it home, and the next day i looked up people with Marfan and found Isiah, and what made me happy is that he is still playing for the pro's
God loves you and He knows what's best.
You can see how much he cared about the game (so sad and unfair)
He deserves everything God has for him in the future 🙏🏽 he put so much hard work into what he wanna do 😩 !! God only puts the toughest battles on his strongest Soldiers and it was him ! Praying for you Isaiah ❤️
Brianna dugas your prayers worked he's cleared now
Man I aint afraid to admit I got teary eyed watching this. Seeing somebody grinding so hard to make it to the NBA and then this happens 4 days before the draft man shit is rough.
God bless you hope you get draft and have a great time with your family.
I don't know Isiah Austin, I love basketball a lot, but man, this breaks my heart

Breaks my heart cause I know what it's like to have to basically give up on what I was passionate about.
Who put these onions here?
I'm so sorry to hear that Isaiah Austin. Having a basketball career must mean everything to you. If I was offered a basketball career and then something bad happen to me, I would be piss off and so sad and mad at the same time. Again Im sorry to hear that. #Zocron subscribe

So unfortunate but all will be well.
I cried watching this
Praying
This is extremely sad. 😔
Such a sad story
This is so sad ;(
My husband has Marfan Syndrome. The first three years of our marriage was in and out of the Hospital.
Love You
That's so tough...
Against all odds he held his own even without eyesight in one of his eyes and he worked so hard to realize his dream.
It's just a heartbreaking story, how much bad luck can one person have?
Thats really sad
I fell so bad for him i wish he can play ball.😕😔
Thats so sad
got you man
I do feel for the guy it is shame that there isn't a way round i.e keeping him under regular checks, but its a lot better to know now than indeed risk death by continuing to play at an intense level
Really sad
This breaks my heart, why were we born into such a cruel imperfect reality?
Dang bro this is too crazy!!😔
damn that sucks man his dream was getting drafted and he can't damn bro :c i'm sorry bro don't worry soon you will complete another goal!
Who the hell would dislike this video?
I have Marfan syndrome and it's super hard :( hopefully he gets better
15prestigeboy it restricts you from doing activities and can be hard in highschool especially because I want to play all these fun sports like bball but I can't
no it doesnt dont use your shit excuses to justify you being lazy. i have marfan syndrome and im 6'3 240 lbs. before i decided to stop being a lazy piece of shit i was barely 130 lbs(less than 1% body fat, i started working out with a single 8 pound bowling ball for both my arms). i had 2 pneumothorax (a couple holes in my lung) and a genetic diagnosis that said marfan syndrome. they also told me i would live with all of my "symptoms" for the rest of my life. they also told me working out posed a great threat to my weak joints. i no longer have a single symptom of marfan syndrome other than a bump on my chest. my weak joints magically went away when i started working out, and my heart murmurs (when your heart skips a beat) just magically disappeared. funny how that works
Liq Ma'diq Just because you can do physical activities doesn't mean everyone with Marfan syndrome can.
My cousin has Marfan syndrome, whenever he does physical activities (like basketball, soccer, hockey, etc) he loses his breath and stamina.
In fact, he was suggested that he should stop doing these activities, and that if he wanted to do sports, he should play golf, or sports that don't require much stamina.
So you are wrong, just because you don't have it as extreme as others doesn't mean that your symptoms are right, and theirs are wrong.
Get better man
thats tough
This kid really deserved to be in the nba ! Breaks my heart! But to be honest they make college kids work and condition harder than nba players, but it's still not worth the risk.
So unfortunate that this dream of his will never materialize, he should be the symbolic #1 pick at the draft, he has overcome so much only to have this condition surprise him days before the draft. Best of luck to this young man. He was the one I rooted for and you could see the present talent and future potential in him.
I know that Ronnie Turiaff had surgery to fix a dialated aorta and went to continue playing his nba career six months later, I wouldn't recommend Issiah go through with this procedure just to enter the nba. If that is the only issue, wherever life takes this young man I hope it is successful.
Two different heath problems
Same organ.
You said you wouldn't want him to have that surgery just to go to the NBA. It could be an option, but the sad thing is that even with the surgery, it's even less advisable to go do Sports. The whole point of the surgery it's to prolong one's life because without an aid, he could unexpectedly die at a young age, and having that super active lifestyle would have the same risk for his replaced valve than if they hadn't done it. And NBA or not, he will need have at some point in his life. It's inevitable. He seemed devastated at that interview, but I hope he got/gets better and doesn't let that take control of his life and find new goals.
My nephew has Marfan Syndrome he is almost 16 and is 6"5'.
respect
He's so handsome he can model
you are the real MVP
poor isaiah :(
I want to see him drafted even though he cannot play anymore. I just want to get his name call in the draft
This is really sad and we always talk about our problem and yeah we struggle and I know he still be paid but same time of course you wanna play Basketball and be draft by a team, also I wish him the best of luck and happiness, health but as getting paid he get it and endorsment deals but still it's about playing Basketball not money.
I want to see him get drafted..
Man that sucks.
This is so sad. Had Mr crying during the draft
Is he aloud to be drafted? Cause I'd cry if he did for real. For him to hold up that jersey next to Adam silver on draft night, I'm praying it happens
To think how good he could've been and this ruined everything 😭😭
That's fucked up! My heart goes out to him for real! He was right there and now it's gone! It will take him a while to get over this, because it is almost like someone dying in your family! He's going to have to mourn the death of his professional basketball career before it started!
Dude, dont be sorry its not ur fault man
SAD
IF I WAS THE HEAD COACH I WOULD STILL DRAFT HIM!!
It has nothing to do with the draft, this syndrome is not a disability! It's a life threatening condition that might be triggerd by excessive physical activity.
Isaiah Austin can have a long fulfilling life but not as an athlete - that dream unfortunately for him is gone.
Yea but still would just to make his wish come TRU
Cainan Moore it would kill him.....
97198708 very true..but i heard he got a job as a coaching staff at his university...the nba is also exploring options for him to have a career in the nba..
they may have not drafted him but i think they can hire him for at least a week. remember when the 76ers signed a kid with Down's Syndrome? just sayin.
If anyone saw the draft they would have seen Isaiah Austin being drafted and fullfilng his dream :')
You are a fucking inspiration. Y
