  • advancesflooring.com Second-round prospect and former Baylor big man Isaiah Austin announced Sunday that he has a condition known as Marfan syndrome which will end his dream of playing in the NBA. From Baylor's official statement:
    Former Baylor center Isaiah Austin has been diagnosed with a career-ending medical condition. Genetic testing as part of preparation for the 2014 NBA Draft revealed that Austin suffers from Marfan syndrome.
    "This is devastating news, but Isaiah has the best support system anyone could ask for, and he knows that all of Baylor Nation is behind him," head coach Scott Drew said. "His health is the most important thing, and while it's extremely sad that he won't be able to play in the NBA, our hope is that he'll return to Baylor to complete his degree and serve as a coach in our program."
    Marfan syndrome is caused by a genetic mutation that leads to problems in connective tissues throughout the body. One feature of Marfan syndrome is aortic enlargement, which can be life-threatening. According to The Marfan Foundation, about one in 5,000 people have Marfan syndrome.

      It's one of those syndromes that is difficult to confirm. The only sure fire way to confirm that someone, who may show expressed symptoms of Marfan, has it is by genetic testing. It's not something doctors pay much attention to when someone appears to be healthy, until the heart has started to show the complications that come with the syndrome. These complications, which become present during childhood in most people who were diagnosed with Marfan, may become present later in life.

Like does God get a kick out of this or is it just all apart of his plan like all Christians say? Crazy that people still believe in God.

      @SmokingTrees Před 7 lety +1

      Yes she did sir. At the time the doctors diagnosed her walking pneumonia. They never thought of it as Marfan's. Until they sent her to Wake Med where the doctors study that. Then it was to late for her. When she was on life support the doctors told me it would be a good idea for me to get checked. After all of this that was going on.

      @Lifewasntmenttoregre Před 7 lety

      Im really sorry to hear that. My mom also passed away 9 years ago and recently the doctor checked my family history to see if i had Marfans and it turns out she had an eye cataract and she also died of a stroke and she was verly in her late 30's, both of these can be signs of Marfans. The doctors ended up telling me that i probably don't have it since i don't have hypermobile joints they are actually really unflexible, but i do have a problem with my joints and i can't do alot with them like lift heavy things or put pressure on them(do you have joint pain or problems?). Thanks for sharing.

      no it doesnt dont use your shit excuses to justify you being lazy. i have marfan syndrome and im 6'3 240 lbs. before i decided to stop being a lazy piece of shit i was barely 130 lbs(less than 1% body fat, i started working out with a single 8 pound bowling ball for both my arms). i had 2 pneumothorax (a couple holes in my lung) and a genetic diagnosis that said marfan syndrome. they also told me i would live with all of my "symptoms" for the rest of my life. they also told me working out posed a great threat to my weak joints. i no longer have a single symptom of marfan syndrome other than a bump on my chest. my weak joints magically went away when i started working out, and my heart murmurs (when your heart skips a beat) just magically disappeared. funny how that works

    • @sheshenq
      @sheshenq Před 6 lety

      Liq Ma'diq Just because you can do physical activities doesn't mean everyone with Marfan syndrome can.
      My cousin has Marfan syndrome, whenever he does physical activities (like basketball, soccer, hockey, etc) he loses his breath and stamina.
      In fact, he was suggested that he should stop doing these activities, and that if he wanted to do sports, he should play golf, or sports that don't require much stamina.
      So you are wrong, just because you don't have it as extreme as others doesn't mean that your symptoms are right, and theirs are wrong.

    So unfortunate that this dream of his will never materialize, he should be the symbolic #1 pick at the draft, he has overcome so much only to have this condition surprise him days before the draft. Best of luck to this young man. He was the one I rooted for and you could see the present talent and future potential in him.
    I know that Ronnie Turiaff had surgery to fix a dialated aorta and went to continue playing his nba career six months later, I wouldn't recommend Issiah go through with this procedure just to enter the nba. If that is the only issue, wherever life takes this young man I hope it is successful.

      You said you wouldn't want him to have that surgery just to go to the NBA. It could be an option, but the sad thing is that even with the surgery, it's even less advisable to go do Sports. The whole point of the surgery it's to prolong one's life because without an aid, he could unexpectedly die at a young age, and having that super active lifestyle would have the same risk for his replaced valve than if they hadn't done it. And NBA or not, he will need have at some point in his life. It's inevitable. He seemed devastated at that interview, but I hope he got/gets better and doesn't let that take control of his life and find new goals.

    This is really sad and we always talk about our problem and yeah we struggle and I know he still be paid but same time of course you wanna play Basketball and be draft by a team, also I wish him the best of luck and happiness,health but as getting paid he get it and endorsment deals but still it's about playing Basketball not money.

    Is he aloud to be drafted? Cause I'd cry if he did for real. For him to hold up that jersey next to Adam silver on draft night, I'm praying it happens

    That's fucked up! My heart goes out to him for real! He was right there and now it's gone! It will take him a while to get over this, because it is almost like someone dying in your family! He's going to have to mourn the death of his professional basketball career before it started!

      It has nothing to do with the draft, this syndrome is not a disability! It's a life threatening condition that might be triggerd by excessive physical activity.
      Isaiah Austin can have a long fulfilling life but not as an athlete - that dream unfortunately for him is gone.
