How to Grow Potatoes in Containers and Harvest Potatoes

  • Potatoes are super easy to grow in containers! We love this variety of potatoes because it makes great mashed potatoes, easier to peal, early maturing and is usually bigger than other red potatoes.

Hey Hollis, thanks for your videos. I was at Lowe's the other day and remembered your videos, so I bought two bags of Black Cow soil to give it a try, I sifted the bags and compared the amount of wood chips to the competition, and Black Cow soil had less wood chips, so I was pleased with that, also it seemed darker and if I remembered correctly I liked the texture as well. Very seldom these advertising ads work with me, but the product spoke for itself, thanks Hollis, may the Lord Jesus continue blessing you!

Love patotos! If you plant a couple of five gallon buckets then plant two more in a month. Keep on doing two buckets every month you will have a harvest all year long. Plenty to eat use for seed and bless others. Just a thought from someone from patoto county in northern Maine. Unfortunately we can only get one harvest a year due to weather conditions. Nothing like taking patotos from the field wash (the skin comes from just from washing no effort involved) and cooking them immediately!
    Delishesness!!!!!!!!
Love your homestead and I have to admit I am very jealous of your weather. So sick of cold and snow and it's only February three more months to go!!!!

We also love and respect how you both have cared for and included Nancy's mother!!! We actually live in Melrose Fl and it's just a rocks throw from you guys. I have two questions (actually lots😂); 1- Where did you purchase the 50lbs bags of seed potatoes? 2- Have you ever considered making copies of all of you note books pages with all of the technical plans for growing vegetables?

Hey guys. Yesterday I went to look at your old growing potatoes videos from the old house, again, since I saw them before you guys moved to this homestead. I was looking at what size bucket you planted in, and how you did it, just to refresh as I planned for this season. When I finished, I also checked out your sweet potato video also. Imagine my surprise today when your NEW videos showed up in my feed. I took a break from before Christmas to about a week ago, so I missed your new videos on the potatoes. So, now, I am watching the new ones too. Great information, so keep it up. You and Nancy, take care.

Question: In previous video for planting potatoes in 5 gallon buckets you used " cheap top soil." In this video and a few others for veggies,i.e. onions, you are using potting soil. Why the difference and which should be used in all when making your soil mix? TIA

    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  Před 2 lety +2

Years ago I used the cheapest top soil I could find. It worked fine for a while but I noticed all the top soil kept getting worse and worse. The last few bags I opened were basically nothing but wood chips. At that point I switched over to potting mix. It was a lot better but it can be hit or miss as well. Sometimes the bags look very good and rich and other times they are mostly peat. Anyway, when I don’t like the way the potting mix looks, I add another bag of black Kow to get the texture I’m looking for

You always give us wonderful instructions and tips. We can feel the goodness of your hearts as you share and teach us. One question for really small size seed potatoes is a 2 1/2-3 gallon container large enough to grow potatoes in? They don’t weigh as much for this old lady, they don’t take up as much space and cost less than half the price of the 5 gallon size. If they are not deep enough, I’ll continue to use the 5 gallon containers.

Surprised me to see you just dump the buckets on the ground. Last year we
earnestly developed container grown potatoes. 3-gal pots, earlies, planted
over the course of a month starting late April. Yup, 20 buckets, half were Red
Norland. Starting in July, if potatoes were on the menu, dump a bucket, wash'em
off, and in the pot. Boiled fork tender, oh, little taste of heaven! NOTHING better.
Each bucket usually yielded 1.5-2.5 pounds. Ate fresh potatoes all summer into
early fall. Left the lates in the ground until we needed to pull/dig them.

I love this new video on growing potatoes. I liked how you share your concerns along the way because it's similar to what's going thru my mind during my gardening experiences. There's no better tasting potato than one you've grown yourself. A lot of people seem to wonder why we grow what are dirt cheap at the store. Well, nothing's dirt cheap during this run away inflation and I don't know what's in food I get from the store vs. what I grow myself. Thanks again, Hollis and Nancy! Please give Bing Bing a little hug from me!

Grocery stores charge a lot for those LITTLE potatoes! I know it's a 'guy thing'... Bigger is Better! But those 'thin skinned' small & 'Little Bitty' potatoes can be dropped into a 'casserole' or a STEW, just the way they are and if they are ever ALL you can grow, a plate with several 'little bitty' potatoes will satisfy HUNGER the same way a couple of LARGER Red Potatoes or a real big 'Russet' baked potato will. Thank you for taking us from beginning to end!

This year I'm going to grow my potatoes and containers 20 lb bags. I love black cow and jungle growth. I always had a wonderful Harvest of everything that I injured myself in 2009 and I wasn't able to get to the ground to take care of my vegetables seven. So I'm going to try those 20 lb bags I'm going to get about maybe 10:15 of them and get myself growing again. I love your videos they help me out a lot. Have a blessed day God bless everyone

The potatoes we grow by far have the most notable difference in taste from store bought

Hollis, take an empty 5 gallon container and upend it to save your back. My back bothers me sometimes, too, and it helps take the strain off.

Is there a reason you don't reuse the good soil mixtures for other crops after you harvest the potatoes? Love your videos.

If I remember right, he re-uses all his soil, I think he said he added the spent soil to the tops of the plants to bring the soil level to the top of the bucket. He has a video on how to build a soil box, I think it's called a Reclaim Soil Container. I have been using mine for about 3 years now. After the growing season, I dump my "spent" soil in my box and reuse use it next season for top-offs. You still need to amend it with all the "goodies".

When you grow it yourself you know what went into it and it is 100 percent yours no tax. It isn't for free but it is all worth it.

Lol! Bing Bing and his tiny tater! We love your vids! I've learned much over the years, watching you two (three) intrepid gardeners. The thing I admire the best is how easy the process is when you have your work stations set up efficiently. Thank you! Blessings, health, prosperity and peace to you and yours and to all who read this!

Thank you for watching Jane. Yes ma’am, we tried to set up the new homestead so every aspect of gardening has a work station to accommodate whatever we are doing. Planting, seed starting, drying and curing, cleaning the harvest, processing the harvest, storing the harvest. Everything works together to make it smooth and easy to do👍
