Officially, there are only 700 kilometres of paved roads. The capital itself, Port Moresby, is cut off from the rest of the territory and is not served by any road system. It is accessible only by plane. This explains the importance of the Highland Highway: this road is one of the few in the country. It’s the biggest and, most importantly, the only one that provides a link between the towns and villages of the mountains with the coast. For the inhabitants of the highlands it is also the only supply route. However, this road is extremely difficult. It runs through the wildest and most dangerous regions in the country. It very soon gives way to increasingly deep potholes and a road surface that is either breaking up or has completely subsided. Landslips, mud slides, accidents… there are many dangers on the Highway. Truck drivers are also often targeted by armed gangs who hold travelers for ransom. Kevin has been making this trip for ten years. At the wheel of his imposing American truck he makes three trips a week to supply the town of Kundiawa. His boss? A French ex-pat, who’s been in Papua Asia for more than 20 years. This adventurer has made a new life in the heart of the mountains of Papua Asia. He owns several trucks and most of the shops in town. He has become a respected person in the highlands. They even call him “the lord”! And what lies under the ground in Papua Asia has whetted the appetites of major international mining companies. There’s an abundance of gold, gas and oil here, but most exploitations are in the deepest part of the tropical jungle. They have an enormous need for equipment. A number of experienced drivers regularly risk their lives in these forgotten regions. Such is Billy’s case. His mission: drive two giant plant machines to the Moro oil well. A testing journey deep in a hostile forest. Beyond the Highway: the jungle and the mountains! Most villages can only be reached by plane. Every year pilots lose their lives in the highlands. The weather is unpredictable and the airstrips barely usable. Most of the time they are slippery strips of mud. Antony, a young New Zealander, has been doing this job for a year now. It’s a high-risk occupation, but it’s also his passion. On the rare tracks in the country, the only means of public transport remain some old, beaten-up pick-up trucks. Their drivers pay absolutely no attention to safety standards. With his vehicle laden with passengers and supplies, Paul makes daily trips to the villages on Mount Wilhelm?the highest peak in Papua Asia?from the valley. Here, brakes and suspension get a severe testing! The least error means a certain plunge to the bottom of a ravine… It’s here, on the roof of Papua Asia, that Father Matthew lives. He’s a Papuan priest and he’s a unique character. On this Christmas Day he celebrates a huge mass before setting off on forgotten trails that only he dares to take. His destination? Villages far from anywhere where he must spread the good word. -

Lived there 12 years and worked there FIFO for another 5. A rewarding place to live; most people are very kind, helpful and tolerant. All the back roads are 4-wheel drive experiences but one learns. Have driven clapped-out vehicles around the place; a sense of humour helps plus a little mechanical ingenuity. Beautiful country. Thoroughly enjoyed myself and tank yu tru, PNG.
I think Id enjoy a year or two there meself Robert. I traveled the world and love to experience different cultures.

I love PNG and head over every year. The roads are terrible but the wet season is relentless. I'll never lose my love for the country and it's people.
Great video. I was in PNG for a couple of months in the late 80's, it wasn't as developed as shown here but was still quite dangerous although there wasn't as many guns as now. Every man and his dog had a machete tho'. I did a lot of trecking in the western highlands, saw some amazing sights, met some colourful and amazing people. I witnessed village/tribal battles but at that time they used arrows, machetes and spears which resulted in horrific injuries but fewer fatalities. There were some scary times! Glad I came across this video.

I had an wonderful childhood growing up in p.n.g. Many good friends & memories.

I've seen many many cars go around other cars that are going too slow, but never have I seen a plane go up & OVER a car that it was stuck behind! Then again, I've never seen a plane stuck in traffic before either! But, I can relate as far as the potholes are concerned, because Westfield, MA, one of the many places I've lived, is referred to as "pothole city"! I actually sat outside a store once and watched FIVE CARS go by and pop a tire in one of the bigger ones in the center of town, in a row!
I worked in PNG for all of 2014 in the oilfield. Incredibly proud people but very poor. Their Government is incredibly corrupt. As an American I was absolutely respectful of the people and in turn they returned that respect 10 fold. The country itself is beautiful, thick canopy jungle with waterfalls. Lots of WWII history on that island with relics of WWII equipment spread throughout the jungle. I did what i could to help the local villages and native people. If you want to get a kick out of something look up "The YAM Fesitval" where women take control for the whole festival and get to choose what man they want! lmao

When we were in PNG we were meeting a bulk carrier as my hubby is a engineer. I told the driver from the airport it was my birthday and when we got to the hotel we were staying at. He turned to me and said” please madam do not leave here, it’s protected & if u leave it you will probably get killed. We stayed there all night and the next day we had to quickly leave as war had started. We were on a flocker plane & were taken to a island and the ship picked us up there. We had to get in a boat at night then climb the rope stairs to get on the ship.
8 months later when we returned home from travelling around the world, while hubby worked. We heard about all the massacres that happened in Papua New Guinea only days after we left - it’s was heart breaking but felt safe back home….
Now China has bought into there country and Solomon Islands They won’t want to cheat them and just use Chinese workers as these ppl are poor and hate being told what to do. They are also hugely built. They won’t think twice about shooting a Chinese worker and if the Chinese send army over there ……. I’d put my money on all the villages

This is a nice documentary. Very original presents the situation as it is, with a funny commentator who made some few mistakes when explaining the names of places.
From the content, it is clear that this video was shot before the 2012 General Elections because Mr Gerard Phillips was a candidate at that time. The road to Gembogl is also totally different now from what you can see in this video. Road works started in 2013. First 10 km to Mandime we completed and sealed by 2015. And today the Chinese are working on the road. Much has improved.
Nevertheless, the video is great. One striking thing you see is that despite the daily hardships, struggles that people experience, they always smile and laugh.
Seems like there are quite a bit of opportunities in underdeveloped countries, especially providing transportation, be it via road, air or water.. immagine if you'd have access in all three..

Most of these people are speaking English but they translate it anyway... I can understand them just fine.
The original documentary was in French, they probably translated the translation. English wasn't always spoken though, many people were speaking Tok Pisin which uses many English words but is mostly unintelligible to English speakers

i met an indian chief in northern canada. he said,"a lot of us indians complain about white people but im getting plumbing in my house next year and that's just great, especially in the winter I won't have to do my business in -40". There is loss of diversity but western culture spreads because it is a collection of wonderful technology more than anything. Its easy to romanticize a culture that we are not familiar with but if 20% of your kids die before they reach 2 years old and masses of people die in a bad growing season, western culture doesn't seem so bad and that is why it spreads.
It brings roads, access to medical professionals ,life to little Villages where you can buy the things that you need now, where before they probably have to travel some miles, but sadly, some that don't want to assimilate have to rape, kill, and extort from those who work hard to make everybody's life easier, like a tree falling in a very strategic place in the middle of the road, but a few truck drivers can't get together and move it themselves,no, the locals have to do it for you.... at a price. the scary part was when the guy said: " at least we don't rape the women like they do in that other area" and the police are definitely getting a little piece of that pie too, sadly

I am an american missionary kid who lived in PNG for 3 years from 2020-2023. Beautiful country and beautiful people but wouldnt want to live there again

Daniel Detweiler - The tree was not felled to block the road. PNG is a tropical country with high rainfall and landslides are common in the higlands. In this picture the tree that blocked the road is as result of the landslide that brought the tree with it. In such case those who live close by cut the tree and clear the road for passage but some fees are charged and collected from the road users for the labor put in. If the trees were felled intentionally to block the road, the police personell that were on the ground will be in action. Policeman looked on meaning the tree came onto the road by landslide or simply this is a stunt for the TV crew filming this.

Gosh my beloved worked in Papua New Guinea in the oil fields that was in 1980s. The country has gold beautiful coral and natives who worked it well into beautiful "jewellery". Sad to ear the country has "developed" into this mess now.

PNG is part of Oceania. Australasia is a region of Oceania comprised mostly of Australia, New Zealand, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. Asia ends with Indonesia. I am not defending the definition. E.g. Indonesia is a bit obscure, simply not just defined by tectonic plates.
I think you should learn geography yourself before insulting other people.
