      Noo you interpreted soo many right! Im actually impressed that sometimes you got close to what it actually meant. My tear ricochet is a break up song but not a romantic kind of break up, in my opinion. Not sure if you've heard about her reclaiming her masters but my tear ricochet is pretty much her breaking up with her ex manager scott brochetta. "You can still hear my lullaby" is pretty much all her past works that he sold to Scooter Braun. The person she NEVER imagine he would sold it to since Taylor was very vocal about it with Scott.This also ties in with Mad Woman. Also. Love love love your reaction to invisible string!

      Cardigan ,august,and Betty is a story about a love triangle that Taylor made up. It’s about a teenager named James that cheated on Betty with Augustine witch is the girl from august so the song Betty is the perspective of the story from James the song cardigan is the perspective of the story from Betty and august is the perspective from Augustine. So ya James is trying to say sorry to Betty in the song Betty for cheating on her thru the summer. Betty is trying to explain how she felt when she found out and then she felt like an old cardigan but James put her on again and said she was her favorite. August is about Augustine thinking James was her’s but then it wasn’t. So ya you may be shocked after what I just told you but ya it’s a pretty cool story if you put the songs together. That’s why I love tay so much because she is so good at making puzzles for us❤ ok hope u read this love your channel btw❤❤

    • @elizabethjulia20
      @elizabethjulia20 Před 2 měsíci +64

      I love this too, I personally love when someone interprets through the song without looking up everything, and then after listening looks up a blurb on genius or something taylor has said for context. I feel like there’s a genius to seeing how the song relates to taylor yet she writes in a way that it can be interpreted and related to without ever being about her. I feel like finding the context after experiencing without emphasises how taylor brings emotions to life with specificity that still allows us our interpretations…. and she got that without even looking anything up so I also heavily second hoping she’ll consider reacting to evermore. 👀

    Girl, I'm not even 15 minutes into your reaction, and I already know that you are made to be a swiftie. You're already trying to decode words, making connections between the songs, and saying that you love when artists give specificity and paint a picture. Taylor is literally known for these things; that's her entire MO.
    Update after your invisible string reaction: You have now discovered the secret to why Taylor has had such a long-lasting career with loyal, loyal fans (aside from the amazing lyricism and storytelling). She puts into words what is in so many of our heads, and then we are hooked. It's not just that she's opening her diary to us and being vulnerable, but it's as if she has access to the diaries we hide under our mattresses, too.
    Epiphany: In this song, Taylor draws parallels between her grandfather's experience during WW2 (at the Battle of Guadalcanal) and the experience of healthcare workers during the pandemic. The first verse is from a soldier's perspective, and the second verse is from a doctor's perspective. The bridge and outro then draw parallels between the two.
    If you want the inside scoop about what all the songs on this album are about, I'd recommend listening to The Long Pond Studio session (it's on Disney+). She goes through each song, what they're about, the writing process, and the recording process, too. It's not only interesting to get a better understanding of the music, but it also gives you insights into the craft.
    Aside from Midnights, I highly recommend you check out Evermore (folklore's sister album, also released during the pandemic), reputation (you have to experience it to understand - the best way to experience it is with the tour film), and 1989 (often referred to as the pop bible)

    Great reaction! Taylor has said she categorizes her songwriting into 3 categories.
    1. Glitter gel pen lyrics: these are frivolous, carefree, bouncy, syncopated perfectly to the beat. These lyrics don’t care if you don’t take the seriously because they don’t take themselves seriously. These are just the happy party songs we need when we just want to dance around in joy. Most of her albums will have 1-2 of these, and they tend to be the singles. (We are never ever getting back together, Bejeweled, 22, I forgot that you existed)
    2. Fountain Pen lyrics: these are songs with modern storylines or references, with a poetic twist. These paint vivid pictures of a situation, placing the listener there in the room where it all happened. The love, the loss, the everything. Brutally honest. Most of her songs fall in this category. (Maroon, Exile, The 1, Champagne Problems, False God, All to well)
    3. Quill lyrics: these songs will be deep lyrically like the fountain pen songs, but will use antiquated words or references like language from classic novels. (Ivy, Hoax, Epiphany, Tolerate it, Carolina, Willow)
    So you’ll definitely hear the glitter gel pen songs more on her other albums, but those are really the exception. Enjoy them, but know that the rest of the album will pull you in.

    This is exactly what I wish everyone who dismisses Taylor Swift as a ‘blonde pop Princess’ would do. Take the time to actually listen, properly, to her music and lyrics. She is a storyteller, a wordsmith, a musician and so much more, there is a depth that is so intricate you find different aspects with each run through. Thank you for giving her the time needed to discover this about her. Now if you can, try another album, they are all worth the effort and time, Taylor has been honing her skills for almost two decades, and it has paid off. ❤

I still remember listening to this in October 2020 and sobbing. I couldn’t listen to it again for over a year. Covid was really scary for front line healthcare workers. So the phrase "look at how my tears ricochet" essentially means "you caused all of these tears when you betrayed me, but you've hurt yourself in the process, and now you've got your own tears." It's very akin to the line from the final chorus "You had to kill me, but it killed you just the same" and "If I'm on fire, you'll be made of ashes too"

    16:25 THE LAST GREAT AMERICAN DYNASTY is about Rebekah Harkness, ex owner of the "holiday house" that is now Taylor's after being no one's for 50 years ("50 years is a long time Holiday House sat quietly on that beach Free of women with madness, their men and bad habits And then it was bought by me")
    25:04 MY TEARS RICOCHET is about the drama with Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta. idk if you already know but Scott, founder of Big Machine Records, sold the labels and Taylor's masters to Scooter Braun. also the reason she is rerecording her first 6 albums, so that she fully owns them. folklore is her second album that she actally owns (8th album of her discography)
    42:39 ILLICIT AFFAIRS could either be abou infedelity or being a drug addict. not from her point of view though like most of these
    now my favorite, the FOLKLORE LOVE TRIANGLE: CARDIGAN, AUGUST, BETTY
    Betty and James are a couple but James feels insecure and when he sees Betty dancing with a guy he runs off and Augustine sees him and since she likes him she shoots her shot ("James, get in, let's drive") and they spend the summer together but James still likes Betty and when they go back to school he tries to get her to forgive him for cheating, also because he doesn't even like Augustine.
    CARDIGAN: Betty's point of view
    AUGUST: Augustine's point of view
    BETTY: James's point of view

    • @elizabethjulia20
      @elizabethjulia20 Před 2 měsíci +33

      I’m going to add, for context if any new swifties read this, so much of this album and its sister album evermore (she and her co-producers aaron and jack just kept experimenting for fun and it became a second pandemic album), are folk stories that are not at all autobiographically about taylor… but also entirely about her. it’s like allegories that tell the story of an emotion she’s felt. which I love because it means we can take what we want from the lyrics if we relate to the emotion, even once interpreting how it relates to taylor’s life.
      “this is me trying” is a few separate stories, about people trying their best even if it’s not always recognizable how hard they’re trying.
      “epiphany” is inspired by her grandfather who survived a really gruesome battle in ww2 but was never able to speak about the trauma, and connecting that to the trauma experienced by first line workers during the pandemic. dreaming of relief, an epiphany to make any sense of the trauma because there has to be meaning or some way through.
      “peace” is going to be so significant when her new album comes out because… in essence it’s someone (taylor) being unsure they will ever be enough for their partner when they have inescapable baggage, for taylor that seemingly being her fame when her bf at the time wanted to live a regular grounded life together. and it says a lot to me that she saw her fame and success as entirely negative in this song... maybe he wanted taylor the person without the star, and for better or worse she has to embrace both.
      “hoax” is another one with multiple stories that taylor, at the time she wrote it, says she wasn’t sure had one clear narrative. but I think it’s questioning the reality of your relationships. more poem than song in some ways.
      … see I said I couldn’t summarise. 😅

    Wow your interpretation of cardigan had me floored. I never thought I’d of that way, but that interpretation makes so much sense in the greater TS lore. I always took it to mean that people in her past/ her past in general made her feel like that cardigan on the floor - old, used, forgotten, discarded. Then her current partner found her and made her feel wanted again. I always thought that was such beautiful imagery. Like imagine something tossed on the ground, kicked under the bed. How long it would lay there because no one was even looking for it. And then finally, someone looks under there and says omg my favorite cardigan! I’ve been looking for this everywhere!
    Thinking of that as a metaphor for feeling discarded but then finally finding someone who appreciates you, it’s so beautiful I’m moved to tears.
    But your interpretation had me looking at it in a new light. A lot of the discourse around TS right now has been that she, and the rest of us, were in denial about her previous relationship. With new context, we’re looking back at old songs and seeing the red flags. Therefore, your interpretation that it was in fact the same person who both discarded and then clung to her when she felt discarded, makes so much sense within the narrative of a relationship in which the two partners are constantly on the verge of breaking up but then end up staying together because of a last stitch effort from someone who wasn’t trying at all most of the time.

      Her cardigan interpretation got me too especially when I compare it to what Taylor herself has said about Betty taking James back in the end. I honestly think her interpretation is on the money now - Betty WAS pulling away because she felt abandoned and forgotten by James, and James realizing he was losing Betty shows up at the party and goes through all those steps to get her back. When you look at the whole trilogy... Damn. Yeah, this interpretation is my new one for sure.

As to "Tolerate it" I disagree wholeheartedly as Taylor has said it was inspired by the book and character Rebecca (by Daphne du Maurier) and also contains the line "You're so much older, and wiser, and I" (which Max de Winter in Rebecca was), and couldn't refer to Joe as he's actually a year younger than Taylor.

    I absolutely love your reaction, and I’m so happy that you have the lyrics up. 'Folklore' is one of my favorite albums. 'Reputation', 'Evermore' (Folklore’s sister album), the midnight 3am version, and specifically 'You’re Losing Me' (which is an addition song that has her heartbeat in it as background sounds) are just beautiful works of art. I’m really looking forward to your reaction to the rest of her albums.

    When you talked about Taylor Swift, reading your mind, it felt so relatable. I cannot tell you how many times Taylor has made me feel seen, by writing about an exact feeling, emotion, or thought I had been having. She is so gifted at writing songs that are highly detailed, yet so relatable.

    Girl what you said about Cardigan, how the person is just doing enough to keep you there, then when you're about to move away, they reel you back in... that's amazing. Lots of people say that she was secretly describing her relationship with her ex, Joe Alwyn, in the lyrics.

    • @emmavink
      @emmavink Před 2 měsíci +15

      Which is the most bullshit ever. Taylor and Joe were amazing together. She said so in significantly more songs than she wrote "bad" ones about him.
      It's like you all paint this bullshit narrative when the last 6 years worth of love songs were all about Joe.
      Relationships end. If Taylor herself can admit her own failings in that relationship, I don't know why you all think it's ok to pretend that she didn't have a beautiful relationship with Joe.
      People need to grow up.

      @@emmavink you're losing me says otherwise. And she wrote hoax when she was with yb. No way that song is fictional. How hurt someone has to be to write something like that. He did f up. U are just blinded by how Taylor described the person she thought she was in love with.

    Great reaction❤I can relate to many of Taylor’s songs myself and some of them makes me really emotional😭Thanks to my teenage daughter I became a Swiftie last fall (while watching the Eras tour movie) After that I decided to learn about Taylor and watched several interviews, documentaries and listened to all her albums🤍So happy I discovered this amazing talent and person (Before I’d only heard a couple of her radio hits, but that wasn’t enough for me to connect with her music and world) Now I honestly can’t wait for next Friday and TTPD🎧🎼💿Thanks for sharing your reaction! Please react to her other albums as well. Hopefully you’ll enjoy Lover and Reputation (Two of my favorites) Those albums are much more upbeat and has a different sound. But in general Taylor has unique music and different styles in all her Eras. Evermore is similar to Folklore, and Taylor regards them as sister albums. Beautiful work 🤍Love from a mom in Norway🇳🇴Btw, your hair is gorgeous 💯

    One thing I’ve learned over 17 years of loving Taylor’s music is things might not click initially, but there will come a moment (maybe next month, maybe even in a few years) where it falls into place and you feel it in your very core. Im so excited for you to begin your journey through her music!!! This was an excellent reaction.

    Taylor is capable of writing radio hits and deep songs. Like her radio hits aren’t even close to her best songs but they have their place. Sometimes you just want jam to basic pop but then she’s so much more than that which is what some people don’t get about her

    • @mishripettinger6242
      @mishripettinger6242 Před 2 měsíci +4

      i feel like swifties have a tendency to dismiss her singles and radio hits. they're just a deep and clever and well written as her songs that aren't as mainstream and i personally feel like it's quite disrespectful to talk about her hits as just "fun basic pop to jam to sometimes" when she works as hard on them as she does. For example, with "me!" that song gets sm flack but did you see how much fun she had with that song and how happy it made her? i probably sound kinda harsh lmao but I'm just saying that her hits deserve the same respect as her non-mainstream songs (genuinely so sorry if i sound really rude 😭)

    Also: Epiphany is about her grandpa on the war but also about the pandemic and how the doctors were the ones who were fighting the war. And every time it gets to me because my grandpa died on the pandemic and my brother is a doctor and it was a horrible time for our family, Taylor painted so well.

    This is me trying is mostly about mental health, addiction, and the anxiety of losing someone because it and they still care and don’t want them to leave.
    There’s so much lore to this album. Some say (myself included) tell a complete story if there’s some rearranging of songs. Taylor will only confirm Cardigan, August, and Betty are a love triangle she made up in her mind.
    Epiphany is about part tribute to her grandfather and part pandemic workers.

    I absolutely LOVED your interpretations and how they were different from mine! It gave me whole new perspectives on songs. And the way you were able to pick up on the themes on a first listen!? I still listen and keep finding new things.
    This is definitely a great album to get into if you love storytelling and writing. Some of her other albums might not be as storytelling heavy but there is still great stuff to unravel.
    For Midnights the 3am tracks are a must for those songs that feel almost too vulnerable. The album is on the longer side and with the way you dive so deeply into each song would definitely make a long video. But I would gladly listen to hours of you speaking and experiencing the songs. 😊
