  • The Daily Mail's Craig Hope reflects on Newcastle United's 3-2 defeat at Chelsea on a night when they were undone by three very poor goals conceded.
What has happened to Sven Botman? Also, it looks like bad news for Anthony Gordon after he was forced off injured. Craig has an update in this video from Eddie Howe.
Also, who gets his 3 merit stars? There weren't too many contenders...

The few minutes before the 2nd goal were nothing short of a disgrace. Simple error after simple error. Willock pass straight out of play with almiron on his heels. Almiron pass straight out for a throw in. Burn clearance sliced straight out for a throw in which they score from. There is some real dross in this squad and the board need to promise Bruno and Isak serious summer investment before they want off.

My thoughts exactly in the lead up to the goal. Almiron played a ridiculous pass straight to the opposition in the middle of the park which led to that few minutes of Chelsea pressure out of pretty much nowhere, Burn then shanked it out of play when he had at least enough time to bring it down before booting it away.

I don't think EH is the man to take us forward. He continues to pick his favourites over others that deserve a proper run in the team, like - J.Murphy / Lascelles / Krafth on the right and moving Tino to the left or keeping Tino on the right and bringing in Hall for the left / Anderson in for Longstaff ? Play White for a few games??
I don't know! But what I do know is that EH is getting on a lot of nerves at the moment because of his stubbornness to not drop his favourites. An elite manager has to be ruthless and cunning in his tactics, something Eddie doesn't have nor do and is proven it time and again be using the same players who look lost in their performances - which likely means there's something going on behind their eyes - injuries / pain - hence the poor performances ?? Christ! Look at Botman - he's not such a "Rolls Royce" of a defender anymore, he's more of a rusty three wheeler trying to turn corners at speed - it isn't happening.
I'm pretty bored of EH and his tactics these days, I genuinely think we should be audacious in our attempts and try to get ZZ in; with Michel, Xabi, Nagelsmann or Slot as my other top choices.

I found that an incredibly frustrating game- Chelsea were terrible. We were worse.
Isak and Tino the only players to really be able to walk away from that with their heads up high- I found the whole game extremely concerning.
One small point: Why, when we have such a tall squad, do we play so many of our corners short?! It seems like we only put about 1/5 corners into the box and often try to be a bit too clever with them. But that's obviously a far more minor issue.
I've always tried to be fair on him, but Longstaff was very poor tonight. His nasty habit of errors on the very simple things was very much on show. Almiron similar.
The defence was just.... Bad. Botman still not looking right- Schar weak, Burn slow and easy to beat. The midfield- where I felt we could've dominated- got played around. Gordon injury makes it feel even more like the season's done. Which unless we beat Man City at their place... It is.
Circumstances have destroyed us this season but some performances, like tonight, have not been down to that. Big changes are needed in the summer but if we lose Joelinton, Isak or Bruno I don't think we'll e progressing anywhere.

I think Eddie has done a tremendous job since he's been here but how can he defend yet another pathetic and gutless surrender away from home? I've lost count of the times I've argued with people who've used injuries and fatigue as a rock to hide behind when defending these types of performances because in the main, we've been like this since august. Everton, Bournemouth, Luton, Chelsea. All poor sides we've made look really good. Our two goals were both wonderful strikes but in a way they gloss over how terrible we really were. Our midfield was yet again absent. Our centre forward, fantastic as he is, just doesn't do enough defending from the front and that filters back over.
And for all of you who blame Dan Burn every week, if he's injured now then I'm willing to wager our dreadful defending will get no better.

We are consistently inconsistent and have been since after the victory against Manchester United. We go up after a victory and way down after a defeat. There is now a strong case for resting Longstaff, Botman and Burn. Try Krafth and Lascelles in defence and Anderson/Miley in midfield. If Eddie is told his position is safe for the start of next season he should be trying out players to find a blend.

The concern I think was from the TV it was clear at half time it needed changes as we were so poor. We only had 1 shot. As usual, Eddie didn’t spot it or do anything to change it. Now, I’m certainly not Eddie out and the issue is he’s playing with Ashley era players (Dubs, Longy, Schar, Murphy, Krath, Miggy etc. etc.) but he is seemingly not addressing issues that we can see a mile off. The lack of intensity in the press is a strange one as Carragher said on analysis some players, like Gordon, were flogged but we had 9 days off before the match. The strange thing is that you seemed to see what Eddie saw, which isn’t how it appeared on TV… and you usually line up exactly with my thoughts so that was a bit unusual and maybe stuff was happening that we didn’t see so well on tv. Whole game was odd, they were bad and we were just worse.

Yes, taken in isolation the goals conceded looked bad defensively, but the only reason Chelsea had the number of opportunities they did was because the midfield were just giving the ball away far too easily time and again. At half time you'd have said Chelsea looked like they were there for the taking, but none of our midfielders showed up for the second half and by the time they were all subbed off (mystifyingly with the exception of Longstaff) it was far too late. Going forward the only players due some credit were Isak, Tino and Murphy. It was almost as frustrating as the home game against Liverpool in terms of what I felt we could have got out of the game)

Has looked under pressure these last couple of months, and I can't see how he can turn it around , with the players at his disposal. It had to be either a Champions League spot or a League or FA Cup win this season, anything less, and .... I fear for him. If he stays, the players Newcastle let go during the summer will be just as telling as those replacements that obviously needed. Too many just not good enough, for where clubs owners want/expect them to be. They were terrible last night, and not for the first time this season. The reference to the Wolves game is correct, same could be said of the home games v Villa and Fulham, who both went down to 10 men early doors.

Is Craig in the press meetings with Eddie? You need to ask harder questions. Coaches worry about losing the locker room. Eddie is losing the fans based on starting Burn, Longstaff, and Almeron week after week when they don't perform. And keeping Hall off the field. When you have outside defenders on the bench that can outperform the ones that are starting over and over. Howe is going to lose support quickly if he doesn't try something different.

I was at the game (unfortunately - even worse as I was in the Chelsea end) and honestly, Dan Burn and Longstaff absolutely have to be dropped. Chelsea’s first 2 goals came from Burn’s side. Longstaff offers nothing. Livramento has to be a starter from now on regardless of Trips’ return, whether that be at LB or RB in place of Burn. Miley offers more than Longstaff and has bags more potential. I still don’t think Isak is fully fit as he does struggle to get into games. I am disappointed in Howe’s post-match interview saying we’re not far off and our form is improving. Apart from 2 very good finishes yesterday we didn’t show up and have been passive for so long now. Injuries have played their part and I’m reluctant to moan about Eddie as he’s given us our best times in years but there is a lot he has to answer for this season as well.

Firstly, there's a massive disconnect between midfield and Isak, on occasions when he was closing down no-one was there to back him up, which brings me to Longstaff- how the hell is he still playing in this team? He offers zero, he dwells on the ball, loses it and can't shoot or defend. Dan Burn is massively out of his depth now, anyone can see that and we have a Goalkeeper who doesn't even look like a Goalkeeper sometimes, his starting position is somewhat to be desired.
