- Happy Halloween folks, now settle down for a story about the time Walt Disney allowed Mickey Mouse to appear outside of a Disney film... May contain monkeys.

Happy Halloween SomeBoiOnline! Great video! I love Laurel and Hardy!
Thank you, yeah I've always loved them - timeless comedy!
Apparently an early idea for portraying Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back was a monkey in a costume, but they decided against it.
Wow, that's really interesting! Imagine that 😳
Same thing with the gremlin, but they kept on shitting on set though…
Your right, the monkey is kind of cute but it's still kinda horrible that it clearly isn't having a good time
Yep, props to the monke for a good performance after all that 😥
It had an oxygen tank.
I didn’t realize you talked about that. Nevermind.
5:37 The mouse tossing a brick at the cat is a reference to the comic strip Krazy Kat by George Herriman.
Not just did Krazy Kat have a strong following at the time, but Herriman had connections at Hal Roach and would often hang out at the studio getting some work done. He even teased a Laurel & Hardy writer for stealing gags in a gift painting to said writer.
This scene with the ”cat” and ”mouse” (or at least the execution of it) is definitely not something Herriman would have requested himself, because he had very strong views on animal welfare and was infamously self-effacing.
Fascinating, thanks for sharing!
Me Before Realizing what was in the Costume: WTF IS THAT THING?!?
Me After Realizing what was in the Costume: Monke
Monke indeed 😂
That’s my reaction in a nutshell
An animated Mickey Mouse briefly appears in the 1934 MGM movie "Hollywood Party", a kind of musical comedy anthology film. Mickey's appearance is followed by the 5-minute Technicolor short "The Hot Choc-late Soldiers", specially made by Disney for the MGM film.
Yea I'd read about this but didn't end up mentioning it. Interestingly that film also released in 1934, so you can see Walt was experimenting with Mickey at that point.
I thought the eyes were creepy at first, but then I just imagined it as toms eyes from eddsworld (just with pupils)
Another rare instance of Mickey Mouse appearing in a non Walt Disney studios film is the all star MGM Feature, HOLLYWOOD PARTY (1934) earlier that year! It should also be noted that Walt Disney himself eventually remade the film in question, BABES IN TOYLAND (1961), which also featured a (somewhat) Laurel & Hardy like duo. 😊 CHEERS! 😊
Yea I'd read about this but didn't end up mentioning it. With the films releasing the same year, you can tell Walt was experimenting with Mickey at that point.
I always see this version of mickey in Disney creepypasta videos or just scary videos in general it's always kinda scared me but it's nice to know where it comes from
Yeah it's definitely not as creepy when you know the context; very cute but moreso unpleasant for the monke 😞
I love March of the Wooden Soldiers! Even the "normal" parts of the film are bizarre in a way that only something from the 30s can be, it's hard to explain why though. Maybe because it's basically a live action version of a Silly Symphony or Merrie Melodies, it's kind of uncanny.
It's certainly got a unique vibe from that era, but unique to Laurel and Hardy aswell - brilliant stuff.
Mickey might be in other non-Disney films if Disney doesn’t change the public domain again
Yeah do the thing Winnie The Pooh is doing nowadays Disney 🤣
@@doodlestudios8727 my brain was fried reading your sentence
I always thought they'd find a way around that, but yeah look at what's happening to Winnie the Pooh.
In colour or not that version of Mickey still looks creepy... and is perfect for horror game material with even the idea of the gas mask!
NGL... seeing "Mickey" in P.J.'s is actually adorable & makes him less horrifying. 🐒🐁
My mom grew up watching this movie and loves it, but watching it as a child, I was always very disturbed by it.
The fact that if this film was remade now they would get sued to oblivion is so weird to think about😅
Yes with all the intellectual properties in "Toyland" I see what you mean 😂 Probably one of the earliest examples of a crossover featuring various established characters.
A Laurel and Hardy film...someone stuffed a monkey in a Mickey Mouse costume.
There was some REALLY weird stuff in a lot of those early films. Have you seen the black and white pig person from 1903?
That cat thing looks creepy af 😭
The eyes 👀
Mickey Mouse has another controversial, but unlicensed, appearance in Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat. Also, you should talk about Tomorrow's Pioneers and it's use of Mickey Mouse.
Yeah there's plenty of instances where he was not licensed to appear, but I found this one the most interesting as he actually was!
"Mickey Mouse"also appeared in a MGM musical comedy film:"The HOLLYWOOD PARTY Of 1934"with Jimmy Durante.
Monke Mouse vs. The Cat Who Is Obviously A Man In A Costume
3:15 - 3:20... Anyone else notice the picture of "pork link sauages" in The 3 Little Pigs home? It's their "FATHER"!!! 🤣
If Mickey Mouse is set to enter public domain in two years… then does that mean we’ll soon get a Mickey horror film on top of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey???
From what I understand the original iteration of the character would be free to use, but I'm still highly skeptical they'd let that happen.
Who knows? The internet in general is still so angry at Disney, not only is there no way the Internet will forgive Disney, even if many irl will, but they’re probably gonna “punish” Disney for “just existing”. Walt may have eventually been carried away by his pride of his company, but I’m sure he never intended for it to go so far into the dark side.
Yes we will, 2 of them actually
Disney was not then the powerhouse it would become. It may have been more likely that Disney let Roach use
the Mickey Mouse character (Along with The Three Little Pigs and the song "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf) because
of the publicity they would get by being in a Laurel and Hardy film. Stan and Ollie were incredibly popular at that time.
In 2024, people will only be allowed to use Steamboat Willie Mickey. This means that if he's in color and wears gloves, it's off to court for you. Gotta love how copyright laws work lol.
Truly bizarre how our laws work sometimes 😅
In tern, what the Walt Disney company did in their version of the story, is that they apparently had two characters called Gonzorgo and Roderigo and they were supposed to be a reference to Laurel and Hardy and made them the sidekick characters to the main villain of the story. I haven’t seen Disney’s version myself, I’m only going by what I’ve read.
I always thought that it was rather odd that Mickey Mouse would be referenced in a non-Disney film but I guess it makes sense if the two filmmakers were good friends.
I was shocked to learn it was actually a monkey in the Mickey Mouse costume! I thought it was a puppet this whole time! Poor thing.
Didn't know that until now, thanks for the info and glad you enjoyed!
The Gonzorgo & Rodrigo characters were holdovers from the original 1903 Stage production.
1:47 EEEEE 😆
🤣👌
@@SomeBoiOnline Comedy Gold. 🥲
I've read in more than one source that the stop-gap animation sequence at the end of the film was executed by the Disney Studio. If true that could be the reason Disney's characters were sandwiched into the film.
That's very interesting indeed, thanks!
The funny thing is, earlier versions of Mickey Mouse have become public domain almost 2 years after this video came out.
I think I remember watching this in grade 1 in color
Have you ever seen the rat who walked around Disney when Disneyland first had a Mickey Mouse. SCARY. When I see photos of Mickey from the early days, I wonder how Mickey ever became as popular as he had. Eerie.
Yeah it's a wonder 😂 all of the costumes and merchandise from those days looked pretty eerie and uncanny, but the kids didn't seem to mind.
And once again another amazing video from your Boi SomBoiOnline
Why thank you 😄
3:22
Am I The Only One who was more afraid of those creepy Pigs when I first saw this movie? 😅😅
I suppose it is rather disturbing how he snaps at the hand with the rubber snout 😂
Two facts the monkeys name was Julian but then Julian soon suffocated
yeah, Disney won't let mickey go into the public domain soon. they worked so hard to keep the mouse from the same fate in the early 90s by changing the copyright law at the supreme court just so they could have their mascot. and I'm sure they might repeat history to keep the mouse for themselves.
Hopefully to be honest, it would just seem wrong to see such a big mascot be used for whatever.
I love Laurel & Hardy. I love seeing this on your channel. Well done, as always!
Yeah they're great, thanks very much!
I'd love it if they took a scene from the Jungle Book with monkeys in it and painted over the monkeys with Mickey.
Mickey Monkey should be edited into all scenes featuring monkeys 😅
And King Louie should be dubbed by Johnny Vegas and he should say: "who are ya? What 'ave you done whi' moonkeh?!"
I think it's funny. It's got an interesting story behind it. However, it also reminds me of the live action Wallace And Gromit.
I always loved this film. That image of the torpedo-throwing mouse in the blimp creeped me out. Good thing I like creepy. Thanks for posting!
I think this: ITS MY BOI JULIAN FROM MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS HES SUPER FRIENDLY
5:25 still better than the cats movie
First there was Live Action Wallace and Gromit, then there was Live Action Mickey Mouse! What's he gonna do next, talk about Live Action Postman Pat? Yes, that was a thing. Like the Wallace and Gromit thing, instead of the usual stop motion, there were people in costumes. Postman Pat's actor's costume had lifeless-looking eyes! 😬
When visiting Disney World, be sure to stay in the Roach Motel.
nice research. march of the wooden soldiers was the wizard of oz of its day. hard to imagine a time when disney was up and coming!
references to MOTWS abound in lucas films and others - compare parts of its score to the sneaky theme in goonies, for ex.
yes, animal actors are a complex subject. definitely trainers in both sides of the artistry and ethics spectrum.
also many elements of vaudeville in the film that are all but entirely lost in modern entertainment
Thank you, I can definitely see how it would've been a big deal - so ahead of it's time!
3:00 I NOTICED THAT, TOO!!!
Very interesting video. Thanks for making this! :)
Glad you enjoyed! 😚
Truly a bizarre story. I actually made a film about Mickey Mouse 3 months ago, being a longer version of the "Mickey Mouse in Vietnam" short. I recommend to watch it. Happy Halloween! 🎃
You too! 👻
"Oh yes, speaking of hell" lmaoo
😂👌
i acc saw that clip in a ghostmane music video. And i really thought that someone was dying inside that suit. The twitching and the stiff movement…
For those who don’t know, Hal Roach is the man behind the Little Rascals/Our Gang
This is what will happen again if they let Micky go Public Domain.
This movie always gave me the creeps, yet I can't change the channel. I seek it. 😱
Every time I see that mickey mouse I feel a chill down my spine
Omg, I remember seeing that as a kid, I was like, "wait a minute, is that Mickey Mouse?? Why is he in a Laurel and Hardy movie??" Lolol i was like 8 when i noticed it first time back in the late 90s
Brilliant 😅
I absolutely loved this movie growing up😄 And still do 🙂
I did find myself watching bits whilst editing the video - couldn't help it with Laurel and Hardy! 😅
@@SomeBoiOnline Don't blame you. It's a great movie 😄
4:08 there's actully two colourised versions of the film. the one from 1991 you mentioned was by american film technologies and is possibly on youtube. the clip you've shown is from the 2008 colourised version by american film technologies's sucessor, legend films.
watching from the year of public mickey
Babes in Toyland (1934) is one of my favourite living toy movie
Not so fun fact: the monkey suffocated inside the suit, thats the reason why it laid down
bro this mickey is cute idk why people think it's creepy
Lol after seeing the horror movies of now where we see gote this is take and never bother me even as a kid
We fnati fans call This: the face
WOW HOLY SH** WHAT THE F*** IS THAT!?!?!?!?! Is what I said when I saw that.
Mood 🤣
i was scared of that mf for 1-2 years now it dont scare me
Oh wait it not suffocating but just the costume is itchy😩
I remember that the first time I saw that video it was presented as a cursed video that made you want to commit suicide if you saw it in its entirety.
Context:that is not a mouse is a monkey but the monkey died beacuse that suit did not had holes and died
2:45 - 2:50... Lilo!!!!!! (W/O Stitch!) 😉
Personally (for me at least) when you watch the clip and learn that the monkeys fine (at least I think It is) makes it a little less creepy
Definitely, how could you not love Monke 😃
The monkey even has a oxygen tank in its pants and kinda on its tail
I love this film but you still need the context
i already knew it was from babes in toyland
Is no one gonna talk about the creepy eyes
ikr, it takes a lot to scare me, and these eyes do.
Very nice, what's that creepy music at the beginning from?
It's titled "Spooky Hallways" from Luigi's Mansion 3
@@SomeBoiOnline Nice one thanks, thought it sounded familiar, it was driving me nuts. 😂 👍
🤣😂
The guy on the left somewhat resembles a cross between you and Tom hanks
I assume you mean Laurel, in which case, sure 😂
Tbh looks cute for me
Done a bit of digging it's actually a monkey in the costume
That cat is terrible.
🤣
3:14 Who saw the picture on the wall?
Ah yes, those pigs' father died and turned into sausages. 😋
It also reads "FATHER" 😨
I saw it too, and believe it or not, when Disney made a version for WWII titled "The Thrifty Pig", it was released in Canada in 1941, and there were a few changes, such as the big bad wolf being a nazi, but the picture of sausage links with caption "Father", was change to instead be a picture of an American football with the caption "Uncle Otto". This Canadian WWII version of the short also advertised war bonds.
Yes this actually exists, here's a CZcams link to an Actual 4K remaster of it.
czcams.com/video/YWIk8eg2CnU/video.html
(Edit: I forgot about another change, the ending was changed, in the 1933 original "Three Little Pigs", The Big Bad Wolf tries to climb down the chimney, and falls into a pot of turpentine, but in the 1941 WWII Canadian "The Thrifty Pig", the third little pig starts throwing bricks at the b
Big Bad Wolf, while the Big Bad Wolf is trying to blow the house down.)
