- A full review of my new fave snare the reissued Rogers Dyna-sonic 6.5" x 14" Maple Snare Drum with the Beavertail Lugs. Includes tuning tips, and specific pitches for 3 different tunings that will suit any wood snare, but especially this one. Plus a new theme song!! Come along as I do my first drum kit rehab session for my broken ankle using this legendary snare drum with the one of a kind snare frame system that pretty much guarantees sensitivity at all snare tensions. A true classic sound for so many styles of music. Dang I love this snare drum. This video also features a ton of other product demos including, The Yamaha EAD 10, the Ultimate Ears Pro Sound Tap AC/UE6 Pros, A bevy Of Evans Drumheads,The Heil PR48, The Kelly Shu (Pro & Flatz), and the Ahead Percussion Mach Wave Bass Drum Beater, and Bags. Hey Kenny, Great presentation. Rogers was truly the Cadillac of drums in it's heyday, and there is a good chance they will be up there again when they introduce the full kits again, which I know is on it's way. I bought two of the new Dynas, one in 5x14 and the other in 6.5x14 .The 5.0 is silver sparkle and the 4th drum made Serial D1004. The 6.5 is WMP drum number 46. One of the greatest snares ever made. Rogers will rise again.
Agreed it’s one of a kind. Absolutely love mine. Been using it for all my gigs/sessions. About to try an S-Hoop on it.

a good portion of my percussion toys (including full drum sets, snare drums, etc) were purchased by my late wife over the years in support of my 'illness' (severe drum addiction), or she was with me when I made some purchases (and she was cool about it). God Bless her soul.

It’s an amazing sounding snare drum. Played it for 2 plus years at every gig pre-pandemic , and every sound engineer said it was the best sounding snare drum they had ever heard. And 🤣🤣🤣🤣 on the Earnest reference. Alas so true.

It's nice to see that someone out there in CZcams world that has some Passion and doesn't have a know-it-all attitude like so many of these CZcamsrs seem to have. I can sense that not only do you love what you do but you're also the same type of person that you could sit down and have a beer with and shoot the breeze and not have an ego 16 miles thick. I've always said there are 2 types of people the ones who "get it" and the ones who don't. You obviously "get it".

Glad to see they brought this snare system back. I still have my Dyna-Sonic metal shell snare from back in the late 60's. I keep it as a collector. The Ludwig Super-Sensitive went a step further with this floating snare design by incorporating a thin rod that goes all the way through the drum using a totally mechanical snare mechanism, with no strings or straps at all. I have used that Super-Sensitive exclusively as my go to snare since the late 60's for the very same reasons you like this new Dyna-sonic.
You know your snares sir. Yeah the Ludwig is amazing as well. Both drums sensitivity for days.
I have had both and MUCH prefer the Dynasonic! The Super sensitive has too many plastic parts!!
Man...This is a revelation! I’ve been trying to get “that” sound for a long time on my 1970 Dyna-Sonic. Sometime about 15 years ago I took the snare frame off and put regular Puresounds on there because I could never seem to get the snares to not sound choked. It’s been one of my go-to drums all these years but I would love to learn how to actually use the frame!

I like all of the "complicated" or "over engineered" snare strainer units like the Ludwig SS, the old Pearl free floaters, these, the Sonor HLs, old Yamahas, Premier 2000s etc. Once you get them set they're perfect and you never have to worry about uneven wire tension or any of the other things that can go wrong with the wires.

@@KennySharretts And they are highly appreciated! My drum tuning skills are pretty decent but it's always the snare reso head giving me a hard time. Almost everyone tells to crank the bottom head as high as it'll go but I#m wondering if that's the way to go...

@@KennySharretts The middle one's got it all. Great attack and a full body. That's what I always strive for. I should try this top/bottom relationship for one of my snares. I bet it would sound great on the Joyful Noise Luminary or the Beier.

Do you think you could do a Dyansonic video that really shows how to besure everything is reset with the cords attached back to the face and butt end of the strainer along with any other tips. Cause when we eventually have to replacea the reso head it looks like there could be some fine details to be addressed to besure it's all good again. Thanks!!

Great video! Very good playing. The Dyna-Sonic sounds terrific. I may buy one now! I have a Pearl MLX snare in 6.5x14. I also have a Fibes fiberglass in 5x14. Maybe a Dynasonic in 5x14 is my best bet?

Sound was killer! Finish I saw was tight and the hardware looked modern but definitely wasn’t for everyone. Supposedly it was just a prototype set in this killer blue, the brackets and spurs definitely split the crowd. Sincerely hoping to see something soon, Rogers was always where it’s at for me.
Having done the Classic Dynasonic, would you do a segment on the famous Ludwig Supraphonic, probably Rogers main competitor for years.. 🙂

Danny Borgno That is awesome. I absolutely love this drum. It has become my main snare. I’ve played it on every gig I’ve done since recovery from a broken ankle. Thank you so much for watching. The EAD10 is a great tool for a ton of applications. I like to use it in addition to standard micing methods. For small clubs it’s cool, as well as just for monitoring.
@@KennySharretts Im on the fence about it. I got audio interface and mics and learning how to EQ, and etc. It is a slight PIA to record video nd use garageband or Reaper for the audio and then sync video and audio. That's a nice benefit for EAD10. I'm not a professional drummer, but do study out of Berklee, so I can send my video for review. thankx again Kenny.
For recording vids it’s the shizz nizzle. Straight to the chip OR you can record usb straight to your DAW with tracked midi and ditch a lot of excess mics. Maybe add a Bass Drum mic for depth and done brother. Then just drag, drop, and sync. It’s cake.
Ron Deangelis you could also stripe straight to the camera via the stereo outs or head phone jack into your cameras mic input.
OK I've bookmarked this page to hopefully assist me in tuning my 5 x 14" COB Dynasonic snare drum (1970 vintage). Just cannot get that drum tuned to my satisfaction so maybe this video will help (even though yours is a deeper wood shell). I find my Dynasonic is very tricky to tune seems to have a very narrow 'sweet spot'. Also finally found source for snare wires for Dynasonic snare drums..might look into replacing the ones on my Dyna. Beautiful drum by the way. Had I not just purchased a new Pacific 7 1/2 x 14" Limited Edition snare, might dive into the piggy bank to get one of the reissue wood Dyna snare drums.

Great tutorial, first of all!!! Secondly, have you had any experience with DW's line of True-Sonic snare drums??? It is basically a copy of the Dynasonic, but I've always been curious as to how ITS snare bridge works in conjunction with its 3P butt plate.

Gordon Wood thank you for the kind words 🙏 man I’m loving the HD Dry on my Black Beauty 6.5, and a Genera Dry on my 5.5” ‘62 Aluminum Supra, but if I’m going for a classic sound I would put the Reverse Power Center Dot on that 402. Itssounded insane on my Black Beauty , but I needed heft vs sensitivity for some shows. I also love the UV1 but I’m head over heels for the RPCD rt now. 🤣 especially if you want single ply sensitivity

Would you say that the remo reverse dot controlled sound head is the equivalent to the Evans one here? Or what would you say is the equivalent

I’m a huge fan of all your videos! I’m a little confused on why the Dynasonic has less sympathetic snare buzz. Typically I get sympathetic snare buzz from high toms and you only demonstrate with a floor tom. If you could elaborate some more I would appreciate it. If not, I’ll still watch your content 👍🏻
First of all thank for watching and for the kind words. The system when set properly keeps the snares level, centered, and balance. The wires are set to the frame so the don’t shift when engaged. Add the strainer that adjusts the frame up and down against the head and you get great sensitivity without all the buzz.

Daniel Miller just know for any drum the goal for snare wires is to have them centered, level, and balanced. You will always get a little buzz but sustaining the buzz sucks. Also check the tuning of your 14” or 13” snare vs your 12” Tom. They have similar tonal ranges so Tuning them away from each other can help greatly.

Kenny great review. I've been looking at this drum since Rogers brought it back. The whole snare/rail system indeed looks interesting but does it really help with sympathetic snare buzz? That's a problem I'm dealing with & would love it if this drum could take care of it. Thanks
Hey Kenny! I just bought a Tama SLP G-Bubinga snare and was wondering how you’de tune it to get a good Hard rock/ Metal tone. It’s a 6”x14”. 10 mil, 12ply all bubinga shell with 2.3mm flanged hoops. For heads I was thinking replacing the stock head with a Remo P77, or any other super dry head, because this shell has a lot of natural sustain and hi harmonics I’m looking to tame and not kill. I was looking to take advantage of the beefy low end of the Bubinga wood. Tune it like a Tom. I’m a fan of the Metallica black album type of snare but I don’t like it super hi pitched. I like a percussive crack with the sizzle and sensitively of the snares to be what cuts through, not the tightness and ring of the top head. I kinda like looser snares for a nice spread during the back beats also. Let me know where you’de even start to achieving this tone. Top head tonic and bottom Perfect 4th above ? Idk?
The simplest way to hunt it down is to start by tuning the top head where you like it tension/tone wise. For example low but not too mush. Then tune the bottom head a Perfect 5th above that. Start there. I love the Evans HD Dry, or Heavyweight for metal sounds as well as a frosted EC2. Remo wise The Ambassador X or Emporer X should do the trick. A PS3 may shut it down too much OR it may be just perfect. I know I was getting hella good rock tones from the Red PS3 non coated. Thx for watching!

I played a Metal Dyna big R for YEARS 1980 - 92 All styles of music with a great throw-off as opposed to the over rated P-85 Ludwig throw off

Hmmm so it's "reissued". I wonder where these Rogers drums are made. Rogers USA web-site just says they "returned" in 2017. Where? Who? If they were proudly manufacturing these fine drums in the USA, why wouldn't they publish their location? Doesn't smell right...I read that Steve Maxwell is "taking orders". So Steve Maxwell is Rogers now? or are these drums made in China?or is it both? Funny how they want your $800 for a snare but they can't tell you where it's made.
Had Enough I believe the shells are made in Taiwan or China, but they are assembled under the watchful eye of Pork Pie Drums in Los Angeles. Reliance, the owner of Dixon & Gibraltar, owns the Rogers’ rights now. These were carefully developed using people like Steve Maxwell. Mike Dawson of Modern Drummer has just evaluated the new Dynasonic & gave it a great review. Very sensitive when dialed in.
