This game got shadowed back in 2013 and always lurked around in mgs memes, I love that 9 years later it's getting all the recognition it deserves, truly a fine wine
You can tell this game was rushed because it lacks polish in certain areas, but it's still so amazing and really a testament to what PlatinumGames can do. It's also the most coherent rendition of the metal gear lore by far, and it cuts back on the most confusing and silly aspects of the previous games to make a world that actually feels somewhat serious.
They need to make more badass games like this, just wacky over the top insanity the entire time, every enemy looks super cool and the cinematic combat is a pleasure, always wondered why the metal gear solid games were never like this one.
Because this game is a spin-off hack n slash game, not like your traditional stealthy metal gear solid game with a groundbreaking story that makes you question things. Not at all saying rising’s story isn’t great either.

Just to be clear for Sam's augmentations-- prior to his encounter with Armstrong, he had 0 augmentations. He was a normal flesh and blood human in a performance enhancing exosuit (which might be why his DLC is so hard-- enemies hitting harder and faster may be because he lacks the artificially enhanced reaction times and durability of Raiden). After Armstrong stabbed (and practically severed) his arm, it was replaced with a cybernetic arm, making is the only augmentation he had. This means the guy solo'd both Blade Wolf and a Metal Gear Ray with no augmentations, and nearly defeated armstrong-- something Raiden barely managed at his peak.
If you think about it Sam actually could've gotten worse with his new cybernetic arm because of muscle memory and how he would have to get used to his new arm and stuff
The second Mistral fight helps show how far you've come and how much stronger you've become in both upgrades and skills. The second Monsoon fight is also there.
I think the point of the Sam DLC being "harder" and everything in it being "faster" is that Sam is entirely human at this point, the enemies aren't faster or tougher than when you play as Raiden, Sam just genuinely has no cybernetic enhancements
Its also designed in a much more confining way, playing as sam is much more methodical with very weighty decisions and way less player freedom. Its a parry and charge attack fiesta and not playing the base game on revengeance will ill prepare you for that. A lot of people who avoided rev difficulty dont know that it cranks the absolute shit out of the parry damage and will do things like 1 shot jetstream sam. I wouldnt say its harder, just deceptively different.

Getting the thundergod achievement(all s rank, all hidden fights, revengeance is a completely different experience too because of wigs, hidden ranked fights you backtrack for. Nonsense ranked fights with rocket launchers and helicopters that get you that 0.1 percent stray damage while youre infinite wig b:ing trough everything(no damage is a requirement almost) like its nothing. The only hinrance is bullshit like that and the bosses.

I love that there is "Blade Wolf", "Mistral", "Monsoon", "Sundowner", "Armstrong" and then just fucking Sam. One of the coolest characters and probably my favorite boss fight and his name is just Sam

His theme song during the fight reflects all of this: A man who's lost sight of his reasons to fight and who has replaced them with how he fights, represented by his blade. The bit with no lyrics (or when you knock away his sword), represents how this final fight makes him feel alive and human again. For a moment, he not only thrives in the heat of battle, but he actually rediscovers his original ideals: to fight for justice and keep soldiers from being sent to fight in wars they don't believe in, seeing these ideals in Raiden. He doesn't need the fight itself as his reason to fight anymore when he has his original ideals in hand. The final verse shows Sam's reflection during his time with World Marshal. He had spent so much time thriving on bloodshed, climbing the ranks and becoming a Wind of Destruction that he had forgotten why he fought at all. This is why he is testing Raiden: if Jack's resolve is great enough to beat Sam, then it will be sufficient enough to defeat Armstrong as well. He was checking to see if Raiden was worthy enough as his successor (Think Bruce Wayne passing the torch of Batman to Dick Greyson (Robin), except the test is killing each other).
I remember being 7 and playing this. I struggled so hard with Armstrong and popped off so hard that I cried when I beat him. I was like a whole celebration. It was 2 am and everyone in the house was watching. I felt like I was the best. I then played the game over and over again on the hardest difficulty until I could play it without getting hit. Good times

It took me way too long to notice that after catching Sam's sword against Armstrong, Raiden says "Okay, let's dance." the same line Sam said before their fight and even takes the same fighting stance as him. Also Sam just effortlessly bodying Metal Gear Ray and ending it with one singular quick big boy slash when Raiden struggled and had to fight it twice is just so badass. This game is so fucking cool.
My favorite is that lyrics for the Sam fight are playing from the very start of the fight, which is normally a phase 2 kind of thing, because you already had phase 1, in the prologue.
It’s interesting. Sam cuts Raiden with the same technique he uses against Armstrong only when he cuts Raidens arm off the stump is flat while when he cuts off Armstrongs his arm is cut at an angle. Kinda showing how Sam learned to cut arms flat after Armstrong stabbed him with one.
I really hope they start making games like this again. There was a golden age before mobile gaming, where graphics were getting amazing, but now all games are taking up the mobile model of pay to win, and I can't think of anything now that actually tries. I really miss how gaming used to be.
You should get into indie games, there are some really passionate game developers that make outstanding games. There are even some indie games that surpass AAA games tenfold. I would reccomend undertale, hades, terraria, dead cells, stardew Valley, ultrakill, oneshot, a hat in time, celeste, and many others.
Sam's suit isn't cyborg enhancements. It's more of an exoskeleton to boost his physical capabilities. His right arm is his only inorganic body part, because of Armstrong fucking up his normal one at the end of the DLC.
Senator Armstrong despite only appearing in the last few minutes of the game, manages to be a compelling and memorable boss. Not only that but the memes from this game are still going. Wish there was a sequel
The amount of interactivity this game has is wild. Like the attack where Armstrong throws stuff at you, you can just avoid that completely by running. It's pretty linear with progression but feels more open than most modern open world games.
Im *standing* with everyone that says this game is a masterpiece, after i *realised* that most *people that are just like me* think platinum games are so good they can stay alive for all of *history* . But who am i to judge *whats right from wrong* .
Sam being such a hard character to play makes sense when you remember he doesn't have any cybernetics. Which just makes his boss fight with Raiden that much more impressive, since he's kicking your ass with *nothing.*

I just now realized that the bike that Raiden steals belonged to Sam. That explains why Sam wanted to fight Raiden, he was angry at him for taking his bike.

I think what makes sam my favorite is that “we’ve both heard enough speeches by now” because every single other metal gear game (including this one) is jam packed with characters monologuing about their ideals
This game is so fucking cool. Everything from the music to the combat and the bosses. The story is goofy as hell but it doesn’t shy away from it like when raiden seethes with rage because wolf won’t shake like a dog.
Basically every metal gear solid story lol, mgs 3, and 5 tries a rather serious tone in story, but they still manage to crack up some goofy things here and there, Revengeance just went full comedy mode in almost every aspect and i fking love it

He bears no cyborg enhancements: the only things he has to put him on equal footing with his enhanced foes are skill, a gun sheathe, his enhanced Murasama, and an exosuit. He only becomes a cyborg post-DLC, and even then it's just his arm (the replacement of which proved to be a nerf). Sam dunked on total cyborgs and UGs as a human being. If this guy teamed up with Raiden instead of staying with Armstrong, the battle in Pakistan would've been over within under 3 minutes. Not even kidding

finally got around to playing this game today. As I was playing it, I realized I had seen every major fight or cutscene as a meme or in a video at some point in my life. Crazy how a game I had never played ended up being so familiar and nostalgic

If you guys want your mind blown, check this shit out. You know how at the end of the game when you encounter Armstrong he wears a yellow tie and pitch black suit? Raiden wears the same kind of tie and suit at the start of the game in the limo. This is especially cock busting because the song that plays after Armstrong reaches his final phase (it has to be this way) is as everyone knows, about how Armstrong and Raiden arent so different.
I only got this game because of this video and the boss themes, after getting it and playing through it I never had this much fun on a single player game in ages, it was difficult to get used to the mechanics at first but over time I got used to them and I was just waited for the next boss fight to start. After playing the game I can safely say that it truly is a masterpiece.

Senator Armstrong, even though he is a small element in the finale of the game created a meme an idea that is passed down even today. He was may have died but his meme will live on.
Raiden's memes and Armstrong's memes definitely modify/merge with each other in some way judging by the ending. Hell, if Raiden lost in this fight, I would expect that Armstrong would probably be left with hard questions to ask himself considering how close someone came to defeating him, someone who embodied everything Armstrong sees as "strong" but with a completely opposing perspective.
Kojima got a lot of his inspiration for MGS and MGS2 from Richard Dawkins book the selfish gene which defined meme well before the internet existed yeah they started to lean into the internet meme definition in the later games but that's not what was originally intended
The way this game cuts the music actively is so cool, so if you are about to finish off a boss the music always cuts to the most climactic part of whatever banging tune that's playing and always seems to end at the just the right time when you finally dispatch the boss.
So since I have your attention, due to this video being so new, “Rules of nature”, is actually about how the Metal Gears are outdated, the things that were once so dangerous, they were the final bosses of every Metal Gear Solid game, have fallen to the wayside, to make room for highly augmented soldiers, who are far more dangerous, mobile, fast, and lethal. The once mighty predator has been reduced to the prey of these new apex predators. The song is about how a weapon to surpass Metal Gear has been created, and is now everywhere, making the once formidable Metal Gears nothing but dying hunters, starving for whatever prey they can find, only to be easily killed by what once would have been their prey. And it’s not hard to see this either, since the fight against the Metal Gear at the start is by far the easiest boss fight in the game. And this metaphor also helps build Armstrong’s character even more, because in lore, the thing he uses to fight Raiden before he gets his nanomachines, is not actually a Metal Gear. In the lore of the game, it was only given the Metal Gear monicker to help it sell better, and in reality, is not one, as it is not bipedal, and has no AI. Think about that. Armstrong is essentially piloting a Chinese knockoff Metal Gear, that lacks any of the things that makes a Metal Gear, a Metal Gear. It’s the perfect metaphor for the front he puts up. It looks, sounds, and acts like what the Patriots were doing, but in reality, it’s a middle finger to everything they represented. This Metal Gear is only similar in name, but when you look beyond that, they’re actually completely different. Like Armstrong, and the Patriots, the very ideals he claims to uphold, while secretly despising them, and trying to undermine them. And like how he takes the fate of America into his own hands, he also takes the controls of this fake Metal Gear into his hands, as well. He could have easily just had it installed with an AI, but he chose to be its pilot, to control the machines that will burn down the old America, and plant the seeds of the new America he strives to create. Armstrong in a nutshell, basically.

At Sam's dlc, he DOESN'T have any augments. He goes full commando. He has an armor, but that's all. In the main story, he has a prosthetic arm (he lost his one, I mean...). He still goes full commando, he never uses augments or whatev.

I can easily see a remaster with this game, upgrades to texture res, higher polys on some character models, and a tweak in the lighting model, better reflections(this game legit would work very well with ray traced reflection, or even screen space would work), and a higher res for console versions.
The way the music ties into the boss fights was easily the coolest part for me. The way the bosses connected to the lyrics for one, but also the way they'd drop in the vocals and it gets louder right when the action's getting really flashy. I think bosses in pretty much any game would be more memorable with music tying in that closely
I wish there was more reference to/discussion of Snake, Otacon, and Big Boss. They could do it well enough that it wouldn't be nostalgia-baiting, I think. I understand not elaborating on Snake after MGS4, just to keep it a little ambiguous (even though he's almost certainly dead) but still. It's mentioned in the game that everything the Patriots had censored was released after their destruction, and most of the characters would have definitely read about The Boss and everything that happened with Big Boss.

They need to make more badass games like this, just wacky over the top insanity the entire time, every enemy looks super cool and the cinematic combat is a pleasure, always wondered why the metal gear solid games were never like this one.
Because this game is a spin-off hack n slash game, not like your traditional stealthy metal gear solid game with a groundbreaking story that makes you question things. Not at all saying rising’s story isn’t great either.

Just to be clear for Sam's augmentations-- prior to his encounter with Armstrong, he had 0 augmentations. He was a normal flesh and blood human in a performance enhancing exosuit (which might be why his DLC is so hard-- enemies hitting harder and faster may be because he lacks the artificially enhanced reaction times and durability of Raiden).
After Armstrong stabbed (and practically severed) his arm, it was replaced with a cybernetic arm, making is the only augmentation he had. This means the guy solo'd both Blade Wolf and a Metal Gear Ray with no augmentations, and nearly defeated armstrong-- something Raiden barely managed at his peak.

I think the point of the Sam DLC being "harder" and everything in it being "faster" is that Sam is entirely human at this point, the enemies aren't faster or tougher than when you play as Raiden, Sam just genuinely has no cybernetic enhancements
Its also designed in a much more confining way, playing as sam is much more methodical with very weighty decisions and way less player freedom.
Its a parry and charge attack fiesta and not playing the base game on revengeance will ill prepare you for that.
A lot of people who avoided rev difficulty dont know that it cranks the absolute shit out of the parry damage and will do things like 1 shot jetstream sam.
I wouldnt say its harder, just deceptively different.

Getting the thundergod achievement(all s rank, all hidden fights, revengeance is a completely different experience too because of wigs, hidden ranked fights you backtrack for. Nonsense ranked fights with rocket launchers and helicopters that get you that 0.1 percent stray damage while youre infinite wig b:ing trough everything(no damage is a requirement almost) like its nothing. The only hinrance is bullshit like that and the bosses.

The bit with no lyrics (or when you knock away his sword), represents how this final fight makes him feel alive and human again. For a moment, he not only thrives in the heat of battle, but he actually rediscovers his original ideals: to fight for justice and keep soldiers from being sent to fight in wars they don't believe in, seeing these ideals in Raiden. He doesn't need the fight itself as his reason to fight anymore when he has his original ideals in hand.
The final verse shows Sam's reflection during his time with World Marshal. He had spent so much time thriving on bloodshed, climbing the ranks and becoming a Wind of Destruction that he had forgotten why he fought at all. This is why he is testing Raiden: if Jack's resolve is great enough to beat Sam, then it will be sufficient enough to defeat Armstrong as well. He was checking to see if Raiden was worthy enough as his successor (Think Bruce Wayne passing the torch of Batman to Dick Greyson (Robin), except the test is killing each other).

It took me way too long to notice that after catching Sam's sword against Armstrong, Raiden says "Okay, let's dance." the same line Sam said before their fight and even takes the same fighting stance as him. Also Sam just effortlessly bodying Metal Gear Ray and ending it with one singular quick big boy slash when Raiden struggled and had to fight it twice is just so badass. This game is so fucking cool.
My favorite is that lyrics for the Sam fight are playing from the very start of the fight, which is normally a phase 2 kind of thing, because you already had phase 1, in the prologue.

It’s interesting. Sam cuts Raiden with the same technique he uses against Armstrong only when he cuts Raidens arm off the stump is flat while when he cuts off Armstrongs his arm is cut at an angle. Kinda showing how Sam learned to cut arms flat after Armstrong stabbed him with one.

I really hope they start making games like this again. There was a golden age before mobile gaming, where graphics were getting amazing, but now all games are taking up the mobile model of pay to win, and I can't think of anything now that actually tries. I really miss how gaming used to be.
You should get into indie games, there are some really passionate game developers that make outstanding games. There are even some indie games that surpass AAA games tenfold. I would reccomend undertale, hades, terraria, dead cells, stardew Valley, ultrakill, oneshot, a hat in time, celeste, and many others.

Sam's suit isn't cyborg enhancements. It's more of an exoskeleton to boost his physical capabilities. His right arm is his only inorganic body part, because of Armstrong fucking up his normal one at the end of the DLC.

The amount of interactivity this game has is wild. Like the attack where Armstrong throws stuff at you, you can just avoid that completely by running. It's pretty linear with progression but feels more open than most modern open world games.

See, funnily enough, Sam is actually fully human by this point. He bears no cyborg enhancements: the only things he has to put him on equal footing with his enhanced foes are skill, a gun sheathe, his enhanced Murasama, and an exosuit. He only becomes a cyborg post-DLC, and even then it's just his arm (the replacement of which proved to be a nerf).
Sam dunked on total cyborgs and UGs as a human being.
If this guy teamed up with Raiden instead of staying with Armstrong, the battle in Pakistan would've been over within under 3 minutes. Not even kidding

You know how at the end of the game when you encounter Armstrong he wears a yellow tie and pitch black suit? Raiden wears the same kind of tie and suit at the start of the game in the limo. This is especially cock busting because the song that plays after Armstrong reaches his final phase (it has to be this way) is as everyone knows, about how Armstrong and Raiden arent so different.
I only got this game because of this video and the boss themes, after getting it and playing through it I never had this much fun on a single player game in ages, it was difficult to get used to the mechanics at first but over time I got used to them and I was just waited for the next boss fight to start. After playing the game I can safely say that it truly is a masterpiece.

The end of Sam’s fight with the senator is genuinely one of the most badass moments in a game I’ve seen in forever lmfao
That big doofy smile on Charlie’s face as he throws the robot after clashing blades is so genuine.
The fact that Raiden stabbed a giant robot with its own sword is pretty cool. Then you remember his pain inhibitors were off the whole time he did that sequence
The definition of a meme is: "an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation." Senator Armstrong, even though he is a small element in the finale of the game created a meme an idea that is passed down even today. He was may have died but his meme will live on.
Raiden's memes and Armstrong's memes definitely modify/merge with each other in some way judging by the ending. Hell, if Raiden lost in this fight, I would expect that Armstrong would probably be left with hard questions to ask himself considering how close someone came to defeating him, someone who embodied everything Armstrong sees as "strong" but with a completely opposing perspective.
Kojima got a lot of his inspiration for MGS and MGS2 from Richard Dawkins book the selfish gene which defined meme well before the internet existed yeah they started to lean into the internet meme definition in the later games but that's not what was originally intended

The way this game cuts the music actively is so cool, so if you are about to finish off a boss the music always cuts to the most climactic part of whatever banging tune that's playing and always seems to end at the just the right time when you finally dispatch the boss.
Honestly, I’m glad they never made a sequel. I don’t think it could ever live up to this masterpiece. (Wouldn’t be upset if they announced it though)

So since I have your attention, due to this video being so new, “Rules of nature”, is actually about how the Metal Gears are outdated, the things that were once so dangerous, they were the final bosses of every Metal Gear Solid game, have fallen to the wayside, to make room for highly augmented soldiers, who are far more dangerous, mobile, fast, and lethal. The once mighty predator has been reduced to the prey of these new apex predators.
The song is about how a weapon to surpass Metal Gear has been created, and is now everywhere, making the once formidable Metal Gears nothing but dying hunters, starving for whatever prey they can find, only to be easily killed by what once would have been their prey.
And it’s not hard to see this either, since the fight against the Metal Gear at the start is by far the easiest boss fight in the game.
And this metaphor also helps build Armstrong’s character even more, because in lore, the thing he uses to fight Raiden before he gets his nanomachines, is not actually a Metal Gear. In the lore of the game, it was only given the Metal Gear monicker to help it sell better, and in reality, is not one, as it is not bipedal, and has no AI.
Think about that. Armstrong is essentially piloting a Chinese knockoff Metal Gear, that lacks any of the things that makes a Metal Gear, a Metal Gear. It’s the perfect metaphor for the front he puts up. It looks, sounds, and acts like what the Patriots were doing, but in reality, it’s a middle finger to everything they represented. This Metal Gear is only similar in name, but when you look beyond that, they’re actually completely different. Like Armstrong, and the Patriots, the very ideals he claims to uphold, while secretly despising them, and trying to undermine them.
And like how he takes the fate of America into his own hands, he also takes the controls of this fake Metal Gear into his hands, as well. He could have easily just had it installed with an AI, but he chose to be its pilot, to control the machines that will burn down the old America, and plant the seeds of the new America he strives to create. Armstrong in a nutshell, basically.

the game follows the rule of cool 100% of the time and i really think it pays off, it really is the coolest game. maybe not the best game, but definitely the coolest.
The last time I REALLY raged at a game was when this first came out and I was going against those gorilla-type enemies and not knowing how to parry.

Fun fact this game was supposed to be a prequel of metal gear solid 4 to fill in the gaps in the story but then Alastair Duncan (the guy who voiced Armstrong) came in screaming about patriotism and nanomachines so they changed the script of the game.

Two sides of the same sword
At Sam's dlc, he DOESN'T have any augments. He goes full commando. He has an armor, but that's all.
In the main story, he has a prosthetic arm (he lost his one, I mean...). He still goes full commando, he never uses augments or whatev.
He might have some man-machine-interface types, to use that armor of his... But no actual cybernetics.
Honestly MGR is the perfect kind of campy. The Dialogue is cheesy as hell but holds up because it delivers it with absolutely no hesitation.

I thought you were talking about a sequel mentioned in the og comment. I can easily see a remaster with this game, upgrades to texture res, higher polys on some character models, and a tweak in the lighting model, better reflections(this game legit would work very well with ray traced reflection, or even screen space would work), and a higher res for console versions.
The way the music ties into the boss fights was easily the coolest part for me. The way the bosses connected to the lyrics for one, but also the way they'd drop in the vocals and it gets louder right when the action's getting really flashy. I think bosses in pretty much any game would be more memorable with music tying in that closely

I wish there was more reference to/discussion of Snake, Otacon, and Big Boss. They could do it well enough that it wouldn't be nostalgia-baiting, I think. I understand not elaborating on Snake after MGS4, just to keep it a little ambiguous (even though he's almost certainly dead) but still. It's mentioned in the game that everything the Patriots had censored was released after their destruction, and most of the characters would have definitely read about The Boss and everything that happened with Big Boss.
