    I agree with you about the whole cultural appropriation thing. I too think it's mostly Americans who see dreadlocks on white people as cultural appropriation. They just have a really different mindset than us here in Europe. I feel that in Europe the various cultures are closer together than in America. We do everything as one and do not try to make a difference based on your origin. My boyfriend is African and has dreadlocks but he does not think like that at all about dreads and cultural appropriation. Neither do the other people I know that have dreads. They simply see it as something beautiful for everyone.

      Yeah, it's pretty awful in the US. People even call those wanting complete equality racists. It's silly. I once had a girl from my high school message me after graduation (and cutting ties with her) saying that I was racist for saying I am Native American and that I have universal vitiligo (which are both true). She basically said that only Black people can have vitiligo and that I was just trying to be edgy. Racism is such a serious problem here, but I feel like it's only gotten worse.

      +Kexylea yup. Have to agree. I can't scroll down a video without seeing someone bring up the whole "white people shouldn't have dreads" discussion. It's literally under almost every video.

      +kitty brofist Agreed. Of you want to look a certain way to feel happy, do it. Have you thought about getting synthetic or wool dreads? They even have some really nice dread wigs on etsy now.

    To those that say dreadlocks are cultural appropriation; they're not. Hair itself, no matter what the texture is, no matter if you have melanin in your skin or not, hair itself tangles and mattes after not combing or brushing it for a long period of time. That's just how hair works! It's so insane that people actually think it's strictly a cultural thing. It's not! It's a hairstyle! It's like saying only Punks/Punx can have colorful hair & Mohawks! No! Anyone can if they like it! Cultural appropriation is wearing an indigenous headdress, indigenous attire as a "fashion trend" when you're not even indigenous, when you don't even have native blood in your bloodline. Cultural appropriation is wearing a bindi as a fashion statement, claiming its "hippie/boho" when it really is a part of the Hindu culture. That's cultural appropriation. Not dreadlocks. Wear your hair how you want to, fuck what people think. Do you boo. ✌🏾️

    I'm getting dreads later today, and I've had little to none encouragement over getting them. I have convinced my grandma to let me try them for 6 weeks and see how they look. I have butt length layered hair so I'm excited to see how they turn out, you are an inspiration for me to get them :) thanks.

    I don't think dreadlocks are "cultural appropriation", seeing as unbrushed hair naturally will become dreadlocks at some point, whether you're black or white.

    I just turned 21 what means that I do not need permission, but my granny (I live with her and my grandad) would never be okay with me getting dreads - they would never be okay with me doing anything with my hair (african hair, not an afro tho). :/ I'm thinking about getting dreads, but I am not really ready for people talking sh*t again and again. Gosh. I'm just tired of stupidity at the moment. x.x

      I don't have dreads, but I have dealt with greasy hair like you were asking about. How I improved things was to go an extra day between washing (wear it up in a bun or wear a hat if you need to hide the grease). After a few times my hair got used to it and started producing less excess oil. Then I went even one day longer without washing and so on until I could go 6-7 days and my hair still looked just fine. Your hair will adjust to the new wash schedule and start to produce only the amount of oil needed. Hope that helps :)

    • @Haikuhiaku
      @Haikuhiaku Před 8 lety

      +Whitney sews has it right. I too dealt with greasy hair and did as she has described when my hair was smooth. My dreads are 3.5 months old now and to be completely honest, I have no issues with greasy scalp whatsoever. It is actually very dry, so I end up adding a little oil now that they are locking at the root. Dreads aren't for everyone, but to the person who wants them for themselves, they are a great choice. Best of luck! 😊

    what method do people recommend for dreadlocks? I'm currently trying the natural method.. it's been about 3/4 months since I stopped using conditioner, switched shampoo, stopped brushing and only wash my hair 3 times a week at most, and they're really taking such a long time to form. I have naturally straight and somewhat fine hair. Although I love the texture my hair now has, it's just just more mess than dread. I think I have about 8 tiny tiny dreads that have actually formed now. ☮

    • @silvalox9496
      @silvalox9496 Před 8 lety

      Probably the twist and rip since I see it's the most common method used by people who couldn't or didn't want to do it naturally. When I was getting started I didn't wash for like two weeks and I've heard from others who just stopped washing their hair completely or just went a couple months w/o washing until they saw progress or were comfortable enough to do so. I'd probably say try once a week to see if you see any progress.

    Hi Elise, I was wondering what you think about the cultural appropriation topic. I know you made a video about it before but I' ve been reading some articles lately that made me rethink.For example they were saying that Dreads weren't for white people, cause they were used as a sing in the black civil rights movement, and they called it disrespectful of whites to "misuse" this sign. Another thing was that "Dreadlocks" actually comes from the word dreadful, because that's what the white people called the black slaves knotted up hair. The reason it was knottted up, was the bad condition the Black slaves had to live in while being transported to the USA.These two things made me overthink my opinion (I think there is plenty of other Information to be found on the Internet). Eventhough some of the Black People against "white Dreads" might just be racist, I think there is still some who have good reasons for it. I hope I was able to explain the arguments against it well :D.I'm not meaning to offend, I think your dreadlocks look amazing and I'm considering to get Dreads too (I'm white btw), I'm just curious about your opinion. And as you asked in your last Video way we watch your Videos: I think you are an inspiring Person and you bring lots of positive energy to my life

    • @toxiclilcupcake7030
      @toxiclilcupcake7030 Před 8 lety

      It just depends on what you want to do. Let it happen naturally, crochet, backcomb, synthetic or wool braided or knotted in, extensions. Definitely check out online different textures and ways you can accomplish the exact look or feel you are wanting. That's what I did and it definitely helped me choose to get double ended woolies instead of letting my hair dread itself back up.
