  • ** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
A debut on the channel today for Tacosian with an absolutely jaw-dropping sudoku. It doesn't look like there can possibly be enough information given in the grid for this to have a unique solution and yet the way it unwinds is absolutely breath-taking (or tear-jerking). An all-time classic.
Play the puzzle at the link below:
    sudokupad.app/1p9vh22zea
    Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Adjacent digits along a green line must differ by at least 5. Digits along a thermometer must increase from the bulb end. Cells separated by a white dot must contain consecutive digits. Cells separated by a black dot must contain digits in a 1:2 ratio. Not all dots are given.
** NEW SANDRA & NALA FOG PACK **

You don't often hear Simon call a puzzle world class but the psych-out Phistomefel Ring that actually was used as a construct for the thermos and the german whisper by proxy to undo the Kropki dots. Tacosian that was a FANTASTIC puzzle. Top notch solve by Simon too. Just wow, all around.

Tacosian, this was brilliant! Remarkable debut. Those steps with the black kropki, short thermos and German Whisper were sooo satisfying. This was a perfect demonstration of setting something really interesting and fun with just standard constraints - something I always associate with greats like James Sinclair, but this was up there alongside his puzzles in terms of genius and elegance. Rapturous applause. PS: Thankyou Simon for the unexpected shout-out at the beginning... a lovely surprise!

I finally figured out after a long time that r8c2 couldn't be a 7 because it would force 12 pair to be separate from each other ruining either thermo in column 3 or row 7 from being a 12. After that, it completed itself. Great Puzzle!

Interestingly, I didn't break in using box 7 at all. I quickly surmised that the corners must be 159 by thinking about where on the ring the digits can change direction (because they must at some point). I then noted that 9's in box 5 must be along C5 and R5 only (due to the thermo bulb properties). From here, I used the whispers in boxes 2 and 6 to determine that the ring segments in those boxes could not both be high, otherwise the only digit that works in the middle cell of the whispers would have to be 9, leaving no place for 9 in box 5. This removed the 9 from the R3C7. From here, the 3's were placed on the ring in box 2 and box 6, bouncing back to placing the 1 in R3C7 and disambiguating the entire ring.

I was doing reasonably well, teasing out the same logic as Simon (only at my own, slower pace), until it came to spotting that r2c2 was restricted to 2 or 4. I must have spent 15 minutes staring at the grid at that point, simply ignoring the top left 2x2 as not possibly being important, being so empty. Eventually, I had to look there as there was nowhere else left. Getting the 24 pair in row 2 unlocked everything!

That was a cool puzzle and I enjoyed the break-in. That said, the only nit-pick is that the uniqueness problem between boxes 5 and 6 is so obvious right at the time when you get stuck at the final valve and might miss the color of r2c2, that you are very tempted to put the bloody 8 in the middle of the grid already. Which I did, because I indeed missed the color of r2c2 and didn't want to waste an hour while making my eyes bleed.

At 45:25 I figured a 34 pair couldn't be in box 9's thermo because it creates a unique rectangle of 1s and 2s in boxes 4 and 7. Then you know the 3 in column 9 is in one of the phistomefel cells in box 9. From there we can figure out that 3 in box 1 has to be in r1c3. Really interesting that the logic and order of deductions was so different between my and Simon's solves.

First is to see the two thermo's can share no digits. If they did, it breaks region 7 (lower left 3x3), coloring explains this. Since they are 4 pink cells, they are 4 separate digits, 1,2,3,4. After that, you can see that there must be 4 in the end of one of the thermo's. However if r2c8 was a 4, you could place no 4 at the end of either thermo. Therefore r2c8 is a 3. Does that help?

I can't believe Simon forgot the corollary of the Phistomefel ring that if there is a digit missing from the ring it must appear in the center of box 5, and there can only be 1 digit that is missing. With the forced consecutiveness of the ring there are either no missing digits in the ring or 4 missing digits and as such the must be no missing digits and 2 corners must have a 5 in it with the other two being a 19 pair.

lol i always find different and more harder ways to find the first digit than simon and mark. Simon uses Box 5 thermos and i used box 1 and 9 thermos. because the 19 pair was the same. it forces the pair in box 9 to be in column 9. which has a thermo outside of the corner squares in column 9. and it also does the same in box 1 where the 19 "pair" is forced to be in row 1 with the thermo outside the corner squares. there is only 1 of each 1 and 9 on the outer ring which makes it only possible for both the 1 or 9 to only be in 1 corner box on the whole puzzle. because of that it forces the 19 "pair" to be on the thermo so it makes the pair a 1.

That was tough, over an hour for me. I couldn't figure out the next logical step after solving the ring and determining that R2C8 could not be a 4 (because it forces 2 4's into box 7), ended up bifurcating R7C8-R7C9 to solve that thermo and the whole puzzle cracked after that. Not satisfying, going to have to watch Simon's solve to see what he did there.

You or I would probably be happy, after we'd seen it was the case with a specific digit, say 3, to say "obviously, it works the same for 2,4,6,7,8". Simon understands this too, but he wants a way to prove it, without having to go through each case separately.

53:54. Within minute figured our the corners of the white dot squares were 1595, but didn't know which way. Tried having a 5 in UL corner. Then determined which corner needed the 1 by eliminating one because it caused the puzzle to become unsolvable, so I knew the 1 had to be upper right (if the 5 I the upper left was correct) the rest I did mainly eliminating candidates and trial and error. Luckily the 5 ended up in that spot and not upper right because I'd have to do it all again. I spent to much energy focusing on the ring/corner trick ( why am I forgetting the name of it) but ot did eventually come in to play for me near the end. Was a rough one and only solved with lucky breaks on trial error method. 4 of 10 stars
