My Great Uncle served in the AEF during the Great War. He lost his life shortly before the Armistace. My Great-Grandpatents practically impoverished themselves to bring his remains home. Great-Grandma could not stand the thought of him lying on foreign soil. I have his Brunton Compass that he carried with him as a member of an Artillary Team.
The Great War, has been a subject of great interest for me since childhood. Even though Uncles served in WW2 and Korea, and older cousins in Vietnam.
I appreciate and Thank you Re-Enactors, for your devotion to keeping the History alive. Without you all, and your sacrifices of time and no small expenses, this History would have faded from memory.

My great grandad was an officer from 16-18. Saint-Mihiel Meuse Argonne. Major in the 89th I 353rd Co. E Shot in the backside during MA. Says he was awarded the SS. Nobody in my family knows. I don't see any publication of merit anywhere. He is mentioned in a few books. I've reached out to Vet Recs but haven't heard back. I wish I could have talked to him. My grandfather, his son, was an officer in the Pacific. He never spoke of his time at war so it was something the family never really spoke about. WW1 like WW2 fascinates me.

As you might know, a huge fire in 1973 at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis destroyed millions of military records and personnel files dating back to 1912. No duplicate copies were stored elsewhere as backup.
I only learned about it when I was researching in preparation for interviews during the 100th anniversary of the armistice. I hope you’re able to find documents about your great grandfather.
The fire is, of course, a conspiracy theorist’s dream.

@@CaesarDarias yes. The national archives had me fill out a separate form with more of his personal information so they could scrounge up as much as possible. With Covid they’re backlogged 6 months to a year because they were closed. My grandfather on the other side of the family was PFC in the 50’s. When he passed away they still sent his headstone. They have some info but of course not everything. I’ve reached out to other organizations who may have an idea of his merit. Heard nothing back so I am assuming they get their intel through St. Louis as well.

There is clear audio. I just checked, and I had someone else check from their location. It’s silent only starting at 9:48. I recorded close-ups of the items mentioned in the interview so viewers can get a better look.

Are you referring to the sound quality? It’s clear when I listen. I had others check. I used a Sennheiser, which is the top-of-line wireless pro mic. It’s silent only at the end when I show the close-ups of the items discussed during the interview.
