- This is my entry for the Ryan Leach October 2023 Composing Competition; composing a max 90 seconds score inspired by the artwork “The Dudj Brothers”, made by Lorenzo Lanfranconi.
My score ‘Woodland Wayfare’ genuinely displays the atmosphere and feel of the adventures and excitement the Dudj Brothers came across on their famous Woodland Wayfare ;-)
Update 8 November 2023; got it as far as the 'Honorable mentions' with this entry.
Be well,
Jeff Hijlkema - Hudba
This gives me Narnia vibes a bit! Finalist for sure!
Thanks @ Narnia bit! Well, no finalist, but honorable mention, that's prety nice also ;-).
I love your use of winds in the texture, it reminds me of the wind blowing through the leaves
Exactly what I wanted the 'woodwinds' to do, creating this forest atmosphere. And also being a sort of voice deep in the forest.
@@jeffhijlkema very clever! I focused more on the characters of the painting rather than the pastoral background, but i really like that approach!
Beautifully written, excellent use of percussion, woodwinds, vocals and harp to convey a journey / story.
Wonderfull! Reminds me of the vibe of "Ori and the Blind Forest"
This is my favorite of all the finalists/honorable mentions! Didn't get a chance to write anything for this one, but the atmosphere you're able to create is incredibly moving.
I love the mood of this one. Nice work, and best of luck in the competition!
Thanks James, good luck to you too!
Amazing work,sets a really nice vibe🎉
You really have a strong and distinguished sound. I can always tell with these entries when its Jeff! Amazing work!
Thanks so much Gustav. I just love mixing, and you noticed ;-)
@@jeffhijlkema When I grow up I want to be mix like you!
Génial!! BRAVO👏👏
Amazing piece!
Hi there Nick, thanks man. Nice of you to make a visit here.
Love this more concise version of the first part of the Tolkien suite :D
Thanks man, and I love your strong noticing ;-)
@@jeffhijlkema haha that's the suite that introduced me to your work, still listen to it fairly often today, truly beautiful work
Very nice! Totally different from how I interpreted the image, but still fits. I’m excited to see how everyone approaches the prompt as more entries come in.
Sure, all these different interpretations being a goldmine on this RL comp competition.Did you make it to the finals, or honorables?
@@jeffhijlkema yeah, I got honorable! Congrats on your honorable mention as well. Listening to all the finalists, it does seem like the orchestral texture and the mischievous or adventurous character was the most common interpretation. I think that makes your composition even more unique and interesting with the more otherworldly sound design.
@@eosborne6495 Congrats to you also then! Lot of orchestral texture like entries I've seen come by. It's indeed not what I went for this time. Found some inspiration in the work of Thomas Newman though. Probably see you at the live stream! Take care, Jeff
dude your mixing is always on point! Crazy depth and detail! + I love the cold atmospheric nature. Do you mind telling me what choir(s) and vocals you used here, Jeff?
Hi David, thanks so much for your encouraging reaction man. The choir is just the SATB Eric Whitacre choir, by Spitfire Audio. And you know, mixing is all about adding this subtle musical 'make-up' accentuating the stuff that needs to or that you want to. Be well, Jeff
Really nice composition. A bit like like Gareth Cooker's Ori soundtracks. I think it fits with the overal vibe of autumn scene, but perhaps not so well with the story of the brothers. Too sombre and not mischievous enough. That's my interpretation at least, we'll see what the judges have to say :)
Thanks for the nice reaction and the Gareth mentioning. Ddin't know him or his work, but it's great I found out. I agree with your feedback though. It could be way more exciting and more uplifting. At least I made it to the honorables ;-)
@@jeffhijlkemaI saw, very nice job!
On the topic of Ori music, I believe Ryan Leach actually made a video about that soundtrack.
I immediately thought of John Powell when I heard this and was very impressed! Others have already said but I'll say it again, your mixing is perfect. Did you learn your mixing technique on your own or from somewhere?
Hi Cameron, now that's a encouraging reaction, thanks so much. I happened to be an admirer of Powell's work. Learned mixing by feeding my vision on it, spending a lot of time watching online tutorials with Alan Meyerson, Jack Jospeh Puig and Jake Jackson. Trying things out ofcourse in my DAW, tweaking advised plugins and rebuilding a desired sound from out of a reference track or tweaking after my own internal sound preference ofcourse.
In a short while I will start individual Zoom sessions, that can be booked, where I will share my experience on mixing and creating a realistic sounding mockup and where I can look at your work giving feedback on how to improve on realism and mixing. So, stay tuned ;-)
I'll have to look up those names, they clearly know what they're talking about, and I'll be looking forward to those Zoom sessions!
So beautiful Jeff, perfect soundscape! Curious what libraries you used for the plucky instruments and the ethnic flutes?
Thanks so much. The plucky stuff; a lot of instruments out of Percussion Swarm by Spitfire Audio. Also using LABS Mandolin by Spitfire Audio. The Ethnic flutes; Bansuri and Ocarina by Ventus.
Great, thanks for the answer!@@jeffhijlkema
@@sircadogan6362you're welcome 🎶
This randomly popped up in my suggestions. It is absolutely beautiful. Phenomenal work. Subscribed, good sir.
@@sircadogan6362 Hmm, forgot to mention 2 other plucked ones: LABS Dulcimer and a the Psalter out of Conservatoire Collection from Soniccouture.
