"The urge to translate feelings and spheres into music,".
My musical adagium started next to my cradle where my parents had set up a turntable playing pop music. At a young age already I spended hours in front of the Hi-Fi set (really liked 'Autobahn' by Kraftwerk!).
The music that sort of introduced me to the orchestra was 'Russians' by Sting. A song based on a Romance by Prokofjev. In my teens I was inspired by the energetic music of Metallica, Slayer and Yngwie Malmsteen and I started playing guitar. The one musical spark had yet to come; I stumbled on violinist Nigel Kennedy performing Vivaldi's Four Seasons. It inspired me to play the violin. That was when things began rolling, learning music theory and listenening to loads of (classical) music.
I started composing duets for violin. Later on using music software to compose cinematic and orchestal music mainly. Next to this I use my passion to earn a living as a music teacher, in high school.

OASIS
In OASIS I make use of a hybrid orchestra, painting broad spheric strokes mostly, setting atmosphere. Here's my instrumental palette :
- Violins 1, violins 2, violas, celli, basses (BBCSO Core)
- Olafur Arnalds Chamber evolutions.
- Kepler Orchestra Basses
- Horns, Trombones, and Bass trombones (BBCSO Core and Albion Iceni)
- Sopranos & Tutti Choir (Eric Whitacre Choir)
- High, mid and low percussion (Hammers, Spitfire Audio)
- A bunch of soft synths; using patches out of Percussion Swarm, Kepler Orchestra, Albion One, Albion Iceni and Albion Tundra.
- Mosaic Synth Bass (Heavyocity)
- Vocalise 3 (Heavyocity)
- Solo Guzheng (Orchestral Tools, Phoenix orchestra)
- Zen drum (Fracture Sounds)
It doesn’t take much to notice I was inspired by the 2021 version of Dune, music by Hans Zimmer.
All was composed, mixed and produced using Cubase 13 Pro, along with my favorite mix/master plugins. To name a few; the Avalon 737 and 747, the Manley Massive Passive EQ, Fabfilter EQ, Fabfilter Compressor and Fabfilter Limiter.
The video was created using free footage from Pexels and Videvo. Processed and edited using both Hitfilm Express and Davinci Resolve.

The upload of my Westworld 2020 scoring competition submission. That most bespoke Spitfire Audio contest that got a lot of critics because of the chosen winning entry. Through the years my mixing taste gravitated towards a live performance vibe, as if all instruments where recorded all at once performing in the same room, where I really tried to create the joy of making music together, all from the listening position of the audience and not necessarily from the conductors standing point, resulting in a slightly different use of reverb. Amazing and beautiful as always! Well done!
Great music and immersive experience Jeff!🎉 I love how the visuals are complementing the music. The voice reminded me of Loire Cotler 😊
Fantastic! God love A.I. Video in 2024. It works well with this more cinematic track. More, more, more. Please? Love it.
@@mikebbuk Thanks. No A.I. by the way. The video I made compiling a lot of free footage, creating my own story with it. You might like my OASIS 2, That I released a few days ago 😉.
Very well mixed and produced music, Jeff! As a fan of Zimmer's Dune this was really fun to listen to. Crisp and clear sounds and nice use of space. I really liked the Duduk Hymne and the more action-packed stuff (the whispers in The Riddle had a very cool groove). Keep them coming! 👍
congratulations, very clear and intelligible sounds, good compositional taste. I wanted to ask you if it is legal to publish videos with a free license or someone might object? Thank you

Absolutely beautiful, Jeff! Nicely done!!
This is incredible work man! I do have to say that the violin leader sounds a little unrealistic, though as a bbcso pro user myself I know how tedious it can be to make it sound more realistic technique wise!
This is rather special. Was looking for Cosmos vids to see whether to buy it and now I'm sold
Thanks

Great job Jeff...love it !!!
Sorry to be the first to react, we are befriended but you know that I don't keep my mouth shut if I have critical comments. In this case, I am speechless, what a sound! The brass coming up in 1:43 is terrific. We in the Netherlands are familiar with the Metropole Orchestra and this piece is a bit like what that orchestra does. It is nice to hear BBCSO Pro in this context, a littlebit away from the classical path, BBCSO Pro can do it all. Great sound and great composition!
Hi there dear Harry! Thanks so much for your kind reaction, as always. The Dutch Metropole Orchestra Hall sound was a bit what I was after indeed, rubbing against a jazzy, swinging, uplifting vibe ;-). Concerning the pure orchestral it's indeed all nearly BBCSO Pro you hear.
Nice :) Quite enjoyed that actually
Im predicting in another 10 years time, the plugin will boot the computer up by itself.
Can i ask. what did he use to create the music please? was it a notation software or a DAW? Just wanted to ask.
I believe the instrument tracks where created using a DAW, running The Orchestra Complete 3 library by SonuScore. I could not change anything on it's midi automation or anything else midi wise.
Why do you need two reverbs and four EQs? Ok, maybe the reverbs sound different, but surely you could do all the EQ changes in one module by adding more points instead of split over four?
Stage reverb for putting all different libraries in the same space, then hall reverb for tail. Both reverbs used for creating different depths. @different EQ's,; One parametric and the rest all adding a little touch of their own character, instead of one doing all the work. On each EQ I take different points though. Try it, you'll be surprised. Your mileage may vary. Cheers, Jeff
Impressive makeup!
Yeah, it really helped to emphasize what the composer really wanted to say with that song
I'd say that's really well captured in words, thanks.
Well done Jeff!
Thanks, as always 😉.
Holy Moly....
That's indeed up in the AIR ;-)
Klinkt erg mooi!

It sounds like a beautifull day ♡
Great to hear it resonates with you this way. Most of my music has a minor feel, but this one sure gravitates to the uplifting major side.
@@jeffhijlkemaPropably resonates it with your own energie..., is it in tune with your (beautifull) mood 😊
How did you get the syllables sal-ve? Documentation says that the syllables are Sta, Le, Mi, Fra, Ne, To, Fo, Nu, So, Wa, Su, Lu... I dont like the oh-ah from the sustains so much, so I wanted to use the syllables, but I am struggling...
Aha, ik zie het al, 't is gewoon weer het mamma appelsap effect... Sta Le klinkt als Salve, uitsluitend en alleen door de suggestie van de titel...
I did not get the Salvé syllables, Salvé is just only the title of the work. The choir is starting unisono singing Sta - Le - Mi - Fra.
Gr. Jeff
👍
Thanks Marco!
Very nice. And unlike any of the demos/reviews so far, it's subtle and doesn't sound over-baked in the reverrb. How did you find using AIR Reverb? I just bought SSO, and so AIR Reverb is on my future buy list for sure, so I can put my own dry instruments into the hall to match. I've got Berlin Studio, but I always find with Berlin it sounds like a reverb on top of a dry instrument, found it difficullt to really make it sound convincingly like its in the room. Whereas with MIR when I demoed it, it sounded actually in the room. How did AIR fare? Easy to make it sound convincingly in the room?
Thanks. As you might have read in the description I used pre-fader reverb to make it sound convincing in my opinion, sliding the dry instrument signal into the wet reverb signal until I got it right concerning the depth and balance. There are a lot of parameters that can be taken care of in AIR studios Reverb, making you go down the rabbit hole easily maybe ;-)
Fantastic result 👏👏 really pro sound and wonderful hybrid composition
Hi there Alex, thank you.
This one is even better. Where in the first one you could pinpoint some lack in the 'mid' and a littlebit too much focus on the low strings volume, this one is more balanced. And the added playful counterpoint is nice too.
Hey, I just got this library and I'm learning it. Can you suggest a good reverb that goes well with it? Somehow every reverb I use is making the sound muddy.
Hi there, seems you haven't read the description of the video ;-) For reverb I this time only used Liquidsonics Cinematic Rooms, adding a 2 chain send reverb: 1. Score stage 2. Rear Large Hall. Both full mix and around -9bd setting in Cubase (different amounts on the several orchestral sections).
Really great work Jeff. I love the use of the 2 ensembles. Great idea. There are 3 sections though that the slurring just is off. I know you slaved over this. I've arranged this for 3 different live ensembles and it's a wonderful work. The sostenutos are really spectacular though. I mean you cannot tell it's not live. But when there are some slurs and the bowing changes, I can tell the difference right away. I noticed there wasn't much overlap in the lines, so perhaps stretching the overlaps and getting the notes to change more easily would help? I am spitballing here. I think given the sonority of the ensemble, a fix or tow might make it almost perfect. Hope the Barber publisher doesn't come after you for this though. They did me for one arrangement, but we worked it out.
Hi again, and thanks again for your detailed answer, really appreciate it you taking the time to give proper feedback. You're totally right on the slurry, bowing issues on several parts, I'm aware and it's just ugly, detracting. I maybe could have doen a better job on keyswitching legato versus slurred legato. It's just hard to rebow a new note on the same hight using legato articulation I notice. Leaving some needed space in between different notes on the same hight creates this fake sounding pause. Sometimes I smuggle or cover it letting BBCSO just play a continued note over a rebowed note by Appassionata, or vice versa. I'm pretty sure if I'll revisit this piece in about a little year I will sure finalize these parts, even do some more breathing and expression. Didn't had any strikes or penalties, yet. Had one though with my mockup of Arrival of the birds, but it did came through finally. Can I listen to your Adagio mockups somewhere? Regards, Jeff
@@jeffhijlkema sure I’ll finish the works I’m on and then got it out in a month or so
Nice use of counterpoint my man. Really great little counter melodies here and there. And contrary to some: You wrote a nice melody that is memorable and has some nice contrapuntal movement around it making it very complete. Terrific work.
Thanks for your in depth answer, really nice. The use of counter melodies I like because of the interaction it establishes, the almost constant movement it creates and also creating this kind of auditive puzzle. It's a missed opportunity not to do so I think. Regards, Jeff
I think it is a lot better with the changes. I especially like the added counterlines in the second climax. Sounds awesome Jeff and congrats on being a finalist!

Hey Jeff, beautiful work. Congratulate being in the final :)
Love how it stays subtle while creating epic vibes. The quality of the production (especially mix/master) is more than enviable!

Incredible work, really impressive.
Amazing, beautiful! What a great sound!
Thanks again!
What a beautiful composition this is, and what a beautiful remake (mock-up, I never like that word mock-up) this is, with the utmost respect of the spirit of this piece. Heads off for the dedication and many hours you spent, and also for the detailed explanation involving the mastering. If I permit myself a comment on the end result, that is that the low end with the double basses could perhaps be a little softer. On itself it is not too loud in this mix but compared to the Bernstein version it is a thing that I notice. This is a good example of how good products (as the BBSCO and the Appassionata strings are) can be transformed to excellent. By the way, I never knew that Appassionata gives those details about the mikes you mention in your comment. A question of clicking the right arrow when you are on the mix-page. Default you see mix1, mix2 and so forth, and the right arrow brings you to the settings of the various mike positions. Never knew that.
Thanks as always Harry! Well, maybe the manual of Appassionata strings has some more surprises and gifts for you then? 😉. I indeed added some more low end, while I found the Bernstein recording somewhat thin sounding on the low end.
Jeff, that was a very beautiful and expressive orchestration! It sounded amazing. Thanks for sharing😊
Thank you! The challenge was to really let it breathe.

Thanks for your kind reaction. With these short pieces I'm always going for a 'simple' idea and structure that can be embraced easy by the listener, but still with the feeling of having made a little trip, where you forget time somehow.
I think I found a finalist, if not a winner here! Fantastic piece and great, great production. Good luck with the competition!
