Why I Love & Hate The New Sony A7S III 3.01 Firmware

- I finally updated the Sony A7S III firmware. There are some actual big improvements, and a couple things that actually got worse. Custom mode dial actually switches instantly instead of needing a confirmation screen. Focus breathing comp doesn't work on any of my Zeiss lenses, not even the Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8. Focus peaking no longer turns on when you go into manual focus. You actually have to map a button to it now. New menu features are pretty cool. My 7 artisans EF SE adapter no longer works...

I agree with your conclusion about the importance of lighting. After all, a camera is just a box that captures light. Of course, there's no cure for GAS. We're all doomed to suffer for eternity. On the positive side, it's only money that we could donate to cure cancer, heart disease, etc. But then what? When we're 75 we'll be lying in the hospital beds, dying of nothing.
I reviewing Colombo detective series, damn I start to literally see all that atrifical light now. It make very pleasing look but...Hate staged unnatural things so much, it break immersion for me now.
But none of those donations would really cure cancer or heart disease. Most of it would go to the salaries of the people administering programs to investigate the possibility of starting a steering committee for the chartering of a working committee to begin the consultation process around hiring people to work on a cure.
You'll end up in a hospital bed either way. Enjoy gear acquisition for the mean time.

The worst part of the update is that it now will switch from the monitor to the viewfinder either at all times and no matter what tilt the monitor is at. We used to be able to lock the viewfinder auto switch by having the monitor vertical or horizontal completely. Now, if the camera is on the Gimbal or just handheld close to your body, it will always switch to the viewfinder.
Go to Setup>Finder/MonitorAuto1 or Auto 2 to suit what’s’ best for you’re set up.
Monitor & Control app is actually very good. Replaced my Atomos
Don't worry about GAS. You're a camera channel. Also, getting rid of lenses leads to more regret than buying new lenses. I have regretted it every time I sold a lens but I have never regretted buying one. Just imagine if you stil had all the lenses and cameras you sold. You could be having fun switching between Canon, Fuji and Panasonic.
It doesn't work like that, as the cash that you got from selling actually fuel the next gears.

6:44 LOL, I feel your pain. You can totally swipe them away however, at least as of firmware 3.02. May take a little practice but it's possible.
I appreciated your talk about dumping SLOG and going with standard + expanding range. Im going to try it. I was stuck on Slog because I do shoot some in low light at 12800 ISO, even 104xx sometimes. And because of Jerald and his charts I thought I had to use Slog. But the color doesn't really pop. I like the VV profile when there is light.
Panasonic had the instant switch in the gh5 since 2017 😅😅😅😅
I think if you want to get the benefits of Log, you need to be able to color grade, and in order (IMO) to a decent job at that, you need to understand color management, so you don't have to rely on a manufacturer's LUT, which does kind of defeat the purpose.
If you use Color Management, to go from your log state to the display state, you can start with a much nicer, much more neutral look, and then can push things in the direction you want to go.

You didn't even talk about the Phone Monitor thing. Very helpful for me as I can't really see the camera monitor at any distance, also very helpful for people making, um "home movies" in the bedroom? Check those angles. Appreciated your finding that auto TV/ISO thing, I will look at that. Wish they would figure out a "auto Zebra" to my focus point is exposed to a zebra level, or ?

One thing is clear with most firmware updates, the people making them don’t actually use them in the field.

You need to start the swipe om the actual symbols
Your fill light (tube light) should be in front of you (your nose). Just try it. It will give a little more volume. Gradient on the cheek. Now it is running a bit
After the software, auto focus was broken, I will go back to the old system.

You said NEW Flexible Exposure, thought you were referring as new in the camera world or something. It's new to SONY but it was there on Canon (maybe others). Also you are always talking about canon. I don't think there's a clip on your channel that doesn't contain the word "Canon" in it :)

@@cameraconspiracies I never had trouble with them apart form the fact that they are non customisable and pretty useless as such.
On my A9iii it takes multiple swipes. 1-2 to turn on and 3-5 to turn off.
I noticed that having "touch focus/tracking" turned on, it can take multiple swipes to open/close the side bars unless your finger is directly on the sidebar area while swiping.
When i was there.. 🎉
I always shoot in Slog3 but am a huge fan of the no picture profile. I would pick that all day long but there is no dynamic range. I wish there was a LUT look for no color profile.

I would prefer a video mode that is good enough so I never have to do any post editing. Editing video is something I really don't like to do. I haven't shot a lot of video, especially with my mirrorless. But, when I did I used Eterna and was plenty happy with it. Did I mention that I don't want to edit video? LOL! Sounds like you need a new studio with more room for lighting, backdrops, tripods and gear storage! Have a rockin' day!

This movie about camera's menu was the worse thing ever .. Impossible for anyone who don't own this camera body.
For me i wish you get some cheap old CZ-jena lenses, like the 50/1.8 and 135/3.5 (superb ! I love them ) or the 35/2.4 (I want one but I cant afford it ), pair it with the cheapest camera FF body you can find (Panasonic S5 ??? ) and test some old school 3D pop.

If you haven’t tried it you should get the Sony E 70-350mm for your Zv-E10. Closest in size to the little Olympus 75-300 and much sharper too. Full frame equivalent focal length of 525mm on the long end!
I updated to the new 3.02 and ive seen some horror stories out there about it... Now i regret it even though I dont see any issues... Have you noticed any issues?

I can't use my 7artisans adapter anymore, on standby the autofocus works, but when pressed record the autofocus stopped. It works berfore on ver 3.00.

Standard video priorities humans. Log priorities highlights. That's why standard is better for many situations
Having a lot of problems with focus in Stills mode. The little green box shows in the display, indicating focus, but the subject directly behind, is not at all in focus.
apparently the bluetooth on my a7s3 is broken so i cant get dci 4k LOL. i'll take it as a sign i dont need it anyways

sony is not consistent with their firmware releases. they are known to remove features and they get sued after (ps3)
They crippled the A1 by not giving it enough RAM for Pre-Capture.

I don't understand why the bottom buttons are so tiny. There's clearly enough space to scale them both vertically and horizontally. Also, is Sony the only company that puts the useless NFC and Bluetooth/WiFi icons over the image obscuring it for no reason? End of rant:D
P.S. I think you can hide the overlays by pressing the DISP button

Interesting that not a single youtuber has tested focus breathing correction in detail. How bad does it actually works in real life (on lenses it's supposed to work on). Everyone is just talking about it and showing the function in the menu system... I guess the reason is that it's a really boring video to make.

A strange thing I am facing after the last update ... If I use after market batteries an error message appears and if I give OK to go on everything I film after ok it is saved only on card 2.

flexible exposure has been introduced with the A7SIII at launch and you see that now,
just because you can touch that on the screen, the only difference with that fonction due to the firmware is just tounching the screen, before it was just a button mapping whoahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Learn to use flexible exposure before complaining, for example same systeme on the fx30 two buttons are mapped for auto iso and aperture, touch it and boum each become manual, that's easy you got that with the a7SIII and you just never used it and said for million time crap

Why would it be impossible? It's a simple digital crop. All they need to do is measure the extent to which the lens breathes at its worst and then crop in by that much.

@@JohnsClicks From my experience with the S5II, I know they correct it optically but I haven't seen the option to correct it digitally. If you know how, I'd be glad to check it :)

LOG is totally overrated for the most of us... if you are not a pro colorist or you don't give your footage to one... you will suck. Standard Profil or S Cinetone is what I use for 99.994242 % of my B2B Videos :D

Clearly you have overshot the perfect camera and are now stuck with gear far in excess of perfect. The Sony A7S III was already more camera than anyone other than Denis Villeneauve or James Cameron needs. You're ruining us all. This channel needs to be cancelled!
