I fooled seasoned RED owners with GH5 footage that was lit well for a commercial. They thought it was RED footage watching the final edit. Lighting is everything. Most people that lean hard on no light/low light cameras will never understand the power of good lighting. Invest in lighting, sure, but also - hire gaffers and grips. They actually know how to use the lighting to get what you want and set things up quickly.

Actually movies filmed in the 90s can be upscaled to 4k/6k (or even 8k if shot on 65/70mm) given that they were shot on film. Plus 422 isn't relevant since film has better dynamic range than digital, So in essence Film shots in the 90s can and does look better and sound better than what most professionals are shooting with today. Plus alot of films in the 90s had a blurry background it just wasn't every scene

Also, the only reason manufacturers are giving us crumbs is because people keep buying it. Well, the reason why you should upgrade your camera like with the Sony ZV-E10-ii is the firmware, compatible accessories, autofocus and easier to LIVE stream. A6400 was great for its time but today, I would not recommend because Sony fixed and upgrade everything on the E10-ii. The E10-ii will easily last another 10 to 15 years now with those major upgrades compare to the a6400, a6500 and a6600.

I totally agree with you, Jason. I used to capture family moments with a GoPro 3+ Black back when CZcams was full of how-to videos on cinematography and lighting. I didn’t know much at the time, but not having an expensive camera didn’t stop me from recording. Then, video reviews shifted focus to high-end lenses and cameras, and I felt pressured to keep up with the latest GoPro and DJI models each year. Did that mean I recorded more? Not really. I just ended up accumulating more gear due to gear acquisition syndrome. Now, people are starting to pay me for videos, but it’s not because of the camera-it’s about the storytelling and my style. Sure, I’d love an FX3 or an FX6, but I can’t afford it at tis time. So far the FX30 does not disappoint. Lighting is the key for this camera. Low light will always be tricky and noisy at times but it still does not stop me. Hopefully if this side gig explodes, then of course will have enough for a low ight camera. The crazy thing is, anyone can rent high-end cameras whenever needed instead of letting them gather dust. My takeaway is If you’ve got a camera gathering dust, getting a new one won’t change much unless you're out there and the job demands it. What’s important is pushing yourself to explore and rediscover your passion for cinematography. I hope to see more videos from CZcamsrs focusing on how to use cameras effectively rather than just discussing specs. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy gear reviews, but like you said, tech advancements are becoming incremental. Sure AI is amazing and I’m a fan. However, I think the focus should be more on content like cinematography, lighting, and storytelling to stay relevant, rather than just the latest gear. At the end of the day, let’s remember that a camera is just a tool. What really matters is the story you have to tell. Thanks again for the great video!

I'm actually looking forward to my cameras depreciating in value because I don't want to take my expensive cameras out, to the cheaper they get the more I lose and the more money worth I need to get out of it personally to make up for the loss in resale value. If only the A7C had 10-bit video it would be the best budget full frame camera.

  • @PagosaCreative
    @PagosaCreative Před 18 dny +2

I think for the time being things have plateaued. Gear acquisition syndrome is strong and the whole industry supports it. I find myself all too often watching videos about gear instead of how to be better at using what I have. I made a smart move a few months ago and found a deal on a Smallrig 350B for like $350 bucks and have been very happy with that purchase. It's made all my shoots look so much better.
I want to see AI do SMART things that truly help. When I have a shoot for a client i'd love to be able to "show" my camera a few images of the client and teach it to ONLY focus on that subject. My wife is a wildlife photographer who specializes in one type of animal and wouldn't it be great if there was an open source tracking code that she could upload her 10,000 images of that animal and give herself a new tracking mode. We don't need more mega pixels, low light performance, or anything else.

I upgraded from the A7III to the FX30. I wanted a FX3 or the ZV-E1 but I realized the FX30 is perfect for what I am looking to achieve which is getting into professional filmmaking.
The FX30 allows me to ease into that professional space coming from just simply making CZcams videos.
The next step I am focused on is getting the proper lighting gear I need to achieve the look I want as an aspiring cinematographer. From there I’ll move onto an FX3 or even and FX6 if I feel I’ve learnt enough from using the FX30.

Yes, digital camera gear for video has finally peaked. For photos it happened nearly a decade ago already. This is why I finally upgraded my digital camera after using 10+ year old gear (Lumix S5 IIx + GX80 coming from Canon 700D + Canon EOS M) because I didn't want to keep chasing incremental updates. I don't think I'll be upgrading for another 10 years now, except perhaps my b-cam if Panasonic ever make another small rangefinder style camera. Better IQ isn't something we need to chase anymore, it's stellar already.

We are at a stage in technology where we need to beg 4k60 not to come with crop, beg Fx3mkII to come with a built-in ND Filter; where the menus are counterintuitive and seem from the last century... so we have yet to reach the stage where we can accommodate ourselves and accept the technology to invest in the rest. Another thing, this expectation for hardware updates is what makes manufacturers compete with each other and release better updates (despite the competition being very weak), which is exactly why I agree that we shouldn't change hardware with each release, and force manufacturers to speed up and launch better products.

EVERY camera sensor today is plenty good to capture filmic quality (DR>14 stops-probably THE single most important spec in modern sensors, plenty of resolution)- def lighting/lenses/color correction that define the image. People who think the FX30 (and other APS-C sensors) are not good enough should remember that the newest/greatest Arri is the S35 - APS-C sensor (but with 18+ stops of DR!) The base ISO of the FX30 of 2500 is plenty for all but the extremes- and the FX3 high base of 12,800 is actually noisier than the FX30 at 2500!! No high end cinema camera has a high base of over 3200 - a bit of light is plenty (but not pitch dark/moonlight!)

I don't shoot a lot of video (way more stills and the like) and frankly, for probably the first 10 years of my career, I literally used an entry level 10MP stills camera. It had a manual mode, it had a flash shot shoe, and I could change the lenses, it captured more dynamic range than I could realistically print, and frankly, that was ll I needed for the longest time. I still have that camera and know it like the back of my hand and know exactly how to get what I need out of it without even thinking about it, and believe it or not, I still use it all the time, because in this day and age where social is a lot of my business, 10MP is still more resolution than people need.

    - old equipment sometimes fail (eg shutter)
    - you have some specific needs (eg ultra low light photo/video, high fps, pre capture in sports / animal / thunder)
    - you really enjoy evf with actual preview of your images
Beyond that.. take an old D810 or D850 and enjoy

A person who get a 15k gig will typically have a director, they’ll usually be a dp, there will be a gaffer, and a pa, and everyone fills in the other jobs. So if you’re trying to be a DP, investing in lighting would redundant. If you want to be a production/rental house, then yea. So cameras have improved many things over the last few years, but hardest to improve is real DR, where they haven't really done much. Sony's claims that the Fx3 has 15+ stops of DR is technically true, but it's not useable DR and some of it comes from in-camera noise reduction. The true DR of most cameras is around 12 stops, unless you have an Arri, when it's around 14 stops and that sensor is over 10 years old. To me, dynamic range is the biggest limitation of cameras and improvement is very slow there, way too slow to be able to keep selling new cameras, so other things like resolution have come I to play, but ultimately 4K is enough for most things, so that's now over. If someone can bring out a camera with the same dynamic range as a human eye, then I'll really be impressed, but considering that's about 23 stops + "saccades", which is a kind of multi HDR thing we do with our eyes which gives us even more DR, that's unlikely in my lifetime. So while cameras are impressive, they are also still crap, in my view.

Just as many tech enthusiasts were obsessed with phone specs back in the day, many of us are also fixated on camera specs which seem incremental now. What matters, however, is the experience and whether the tool we have solves our problems.Collectively we have grown use to the idea that the tech we have becomes useless as soon as a newer versionis released, and that is not true.

Fully agree that gear matters less if you have proper lighting, and most seem to forget that concept. Truth be told (and I wish I would have known this earlier on when I started) people should absolutely learn as much as they can about 'Good Lighting'. Study the greats and try to replicate what speaks to them. My video quality went up monumentally after I started to learn to replicate some of my favorite styles of lighting. I was able to do a TON with a very minimally spec'd (8 bit even) camera = aka the zve10. But my issue currently today and now, is that I tend to take so many shots in the craziest, most difficult lighting situations, that I really need to upgrade to minimum, full frame and 10 bit, to better adapt to constantly changing lighting situations. Mind you, I've owned several full frames before (a7c and the sigma fp), but I also need some decent stabilization, which neither of those had at all, lol. Definitely a true run-n-gunner, and the less gear I can have on me the better. But yes, numero uno, learn how to light!!! Lighting is EVERYTHING. I used to say its at least half the battle (GIJOE lol!) but now I am a strong believer that it is indeed most of the battle, and the sooner people get to understanding that, the sooner their images will improve. Honestly took me a little while to fully grasp that. Now every project I do that I can have control of the light, I need to have FULL control and I think I might have even become obsessed with how to control light (to do my evil bidding hoo hoo hoo ha ha haaaaa)

This is a great message but it's shortsighted. Innovation will always keep happening, it's what got us to where we are and it will keep disrupting and manufacturers will keep improving their product to the point where current cameras will need to be replaced or you'll be old news.
I've been at both ends of this, I used to believe I didn't need 4k and only record my stuff at 1080p but eventually we all need to evolve somehow.
Balance is (as usual) somewhere in the middle .. big generational changes don't come with every camera release so I totally agree we shouldn't be changing gear every year for next big thing and we should improve skills and use tech as a tool and not as a crutch but we eventually need to upgrade because tech keeps moving on.

    2. Am I enthusiast wanting to evolve, what is enough for me at this point of life to save money and have future proof camera. What I want to create defines my gear investments. Focus on content creation, story, interesting visual style"

  • @fotosvond_
    @fotosvond_ Před 20 dny

Yes, I think this point is reached.
Most of what comes "new" now is not needed in an essential way. It is more of a "good to have" category, nothing that will decide over success and failure. Of course there might be very specific application cases where this is different, but for the most part: what we have is what we need.
There are of course some fields where you can be sure to see future development, such as global shutter and (for Sony) better stabilization on FF.
I am not a professional and my camera is an A7R III (doing mainly nature/landscape), but I cannot think of anybody who would not be able to get exceptional results with this body and a proper lens. You can pull out so much from it, why would you replace it with something newer? Yes, you could say it does not have 10-bit HEIC for images. Absolutely. Big deal? Not really. Yes, it is 4:2:0 8-bit for video. Video looks very good nevertheless. If I want, I can learn to really get the last bit out of Slog2 footage, the dynamic range is amazing, why would I want to get 8K or 10-bit footage or whatever? All of this requires additional gear that can handle it. Put Slog2 in Rec.709 colour mode and work with that, make things more simple and to the point. Results are not bad in any way.
Even more: I bet if cameras would put their whole sensor data and no skipped lines or whatever into a 1080p file, this would look good enough. It doesn't make sense to push everything forward just because you can. You have bigger files, more demanding codecs and hardware requirements and problems that come with these. I don't really think that all this is really necessary, it just distracts from the main aspect. Every person that is somehow into this whole camera topic knows how easy it is to get lost in specs or gear discussion. That's actually not the point.

Once a piece of gear comes along and minuses the amount of time and effort needed to do what you need it to, that will start to take some of that market share. The convenience of having the camera do ALL the work is a powerful marketing tool.
At the moment, there's only one company that I can see doing that first with traditional cameras if they decided to make one, and that's the rumoured DJI mirrorless. They've done it with Drones, gimbals and Vlogging, and they're taking away some of GoPro's share for action cams.

They say it`s for beginners. I think it will put you off right away, it`s old crap and luckily we got something way better right now.

I can safely say, that i have outgrown my FX3 by now. Sounds weird since they're shooting "the creator" like films on this beast, BUT i am so done with CFxpress Type A cards and no internal ND. besides that? I love this camera and it will stay as a B-Cam. =)

You say this, then you lose a client to a trust fund baby that follows your trail for years with 3x your gear budget and does it all for less because their dead dad is still paying their mortgage with lawsuit money.

I am wondering if there is big difference between a7iv and fx3/a7s3/zv1 because a7iv was looking quite digital with crushed mushy shadows

Nope, looks the same, IF you expose correctly. Of cos ISO values aperture etc etc will be different but if you expose correctly with proper lighting like what he said, nope

@@ivantanzh17 then there is big difference between them and Blackmagic or red komodo. Sony looks very digital

The only new game changer is the Panasonic internal 32bit float and maybe the new Sony global universal Galaxy shutter camera thingy that's coming out but even then that's ok

Hi - what kind of microphone/recorder are you holding in your hand while lying on the sofa? Is that just a prop or a real recording unit?

Videographers only getting filters and 3d/post process lights since not every video needs "perfect lighted models". Stories don't really matter anymore since people would rather buy mythologies and high fantasy that's crap in cinematography sometimes rather than "serious" self promoting content.
