    Episode Notes:
    1. PC version shown. This can also run on other devices like the OG Xbox.
    2. My previous video was based on v5.1
    3. This works with multiple controllers. I used an Xbox One pad.
    4. Bomber Games did a heck of a job with this. I really wish Sega would pick it up and officially release it.
    5. A quick Google search will get you the entire soundtrack. It's worth finding.

    Sega should have had these guys handle Streets of Rage 4 just like they did with Christian Whitehead and Sonic Mania. These guys understand what makes the originals so great. I noticed some of the scrolling is still pretty framey though, especially when you showed them on the jet skis (towards the end of that clip).

      Bomberlink would have made a very faithful SOR4, but I bet it wouldn't have evolved the formula as much as what we currently got. I love both SoRR and SoR4, though.
      I think the job done by Guard Crush games advanced the series' gameplay in the right ways with additions like being able to juggle enemies, the way specials work now where you can get your spent life back if you don't get hit, and the combo counter where if you're good enough you can even chain the entire level and rack up a huge score (and extra lives in the process), it all makes the game very replayable and gives the player an incentive to improve.
      If anything I'd love it if they made a SoRR "v5.3" which added SoR4's iterations of the characters (but redrawn to be consistent with the classic look) with the new mechanics implemented. That would push replayability of this game beyond the 100-hour mark to me.

    • @kathleendelcourt8136
      @kathleendelcourt8136 Před 2 lety +7

      I really like both games, and I think you can't really compare them. Bomber Games did what only an independent studio could, SORR's development took so many years that many believed that the games would never be released in a fully finished state. I remember thinking before the v5 release that they should stop planning new features every 6 months or the game would never come out otherwise. On the other hand SOR4 is an officially licensed title and SEGA would never have accepted to let a studio drag the game's development over a decade!
      I don't think we could have had much better than what we had for SOR4 given the time and budget constrains. I think the result is more than convincing and its DLC is one of the most honest and content packed that I have seen at this price tag.

    Funny thing about Streets of Rage 4 was that the beat ‘em up game Fighting Force by Core Design was originally pitched to Sega as that potential fourth game. Sega said no because of Core wanting the game to be multi-platform rather than a Saturn exclusive, so it was rebranded and published by Eidos. I’m very glad it didn’t get picked up by Sega, as Fighting Force was rather mediocre and the less about its sequel, the better.

    These guys held the torch for years and years until Sega finally decided to develop a fourth installment. We can't thank them enough, SoR Remake has always been a top notch indie game (that's how I see it).

    I barely touch SOF 4 since SOF Remake gives me EVERYTHING I miss from the 90s experience and more. Like SOF 4, the recent Battletoads game was the final straw when it came to abandoning the more traditional pixel art in favor of HD graphics. No cool robot designs for enemies, anatomical realism, or detailed high-tech interiors like in SOF 3. Love this re-imagined Streets of Rage. Thanks to Bomber Games for this gift!

    I wish Sega could hire the team behind this and make this an official release. I am sure that many fans (myself included) would pay for an official release of this. Bring it to the Switch too.

    • @TechRyze
      @TechRyze Před 2 lety

      Sega could have just continued to release games on their existing consoles.
      It would have been fantastic to see games on PS2 & Xbox also come to Dreamcast, such as Crazy Taxi 3, and games like the Sega Ages re-releases get back ported to Dreamcast and Saturn.
      A game like this could still be released across new consoles and as far back as the Mega CD if they cared to do so.
      Such a shame that Sega don't seem to understand console gaming beyond Sonic.

    SOR4 is a solid beat'em up but I didn't like the juggle system all that much but this one reminds me of the trilogy with a huge overhaul in moves, stages and that classic 2d sprite work. Definitely gonna give this a go.

    Streets of rage is hands down the best beat-em-up of all time! THE REAL reason to own a GENESIS, aside from THE ROAD RASH SERIES! I'll never forget the time I had a friend over and we killed a bottle of Scotch while playing this. He one time verbally expressed "This is fuckin awesome". Growing up playing these games it was a delight for me to hear that while kicking ass alongside my homie.

    Was addicted to this about a year ago. I actually like how you can unlock AI partners, who are better then a lot of real life coop partners I bring with me.
    Izumi, the famous SoR2 speed runner, called it "Mugen fan game". Also claimed he liked it on a fun level, but for whatever reason didn't think of it as a real SoR game stylistically.
    Eh, it's fun by my clock, and that's all that matters.

    • @Shyning77
      @Shyning77 Před 2 lety +1

      "Mugen fan game" couldn't be further from the truth, as the engine has been made from scratch specifically for this game.

      @@Shyning77 Well, he's a speed runner. As impressive as their skills are I find they can be a little off colored sometimes (Look up the CZcams video about how God of War 2 was cracked wide open by a speed runner, he was clearly a little bit insane.. :) )

    I also thought the default visual style of Streets of Rage 4 was off. I know it has fans, but I didn't like the art style from when they revealed it. It struck me as odd that they either didn't announce the retro filters or barely made that known. I really liked what I saw of those filters. Seems like it would have been better to advertise that for people like me. As for the art, I had a couple of issues. The main one was the thick black outlines on the characters. It made everything look so flat. The developer showed concept art that didn't have the thick outlines and it looked much better to me. I thought there were some other odd design choices, but those were smaller things. As for this Remake v5.2, it really looks incredible what they've put into this. I'll have to look into it. Thanks for showing.

    I have an early version installed on my modded OG X-Box and it plays great - I was just happy to have a version to play after Sega put the stoppers on the project. Never knew they carried on the great work. Sadly I have no tech skills to add this update to my Xbox and not sure if my EmuELEC Android box would handle it or how to get that running either so I guess i'll just hook my laptop up to my TV for now. Looking forward to getting back into this again.

    Thought this was going to be something about BoR and was pleasantly surprised. Along with Toejam and Earl, SoR was one of the first Sega games I ever owned other than the pack in Sonic as a kid and it’s always held a special place to me. Looks far more appealing, at least to me, than SoR4. Can’t wait to try it out.

  • @kaukui

    As usual, great content. When I saw this, I used the link, then I noticed I'd already got it! But this reminded me to play it. SoRRv52 is probably the best version of Streets of Rage. I like SoR4 but SoRRv52 is the best version of the whole Streets of Rage (unofficial) franchise. I've always had the unpopular opinion that Bare Knuckle 3 was the best SoR, regardless of music, but SoRR52 is the best SoR simply because it is BK3 (not SoR3) but with all the bells and whistles. And you can run... And use your partner for team up attacks. Something sadly lacking in SoR4. I do hope that SoR4 improves. Everyone should be able to run.

      I don't know if it's fair to put SORR, a fan game with no limits, up against a retail game. Like......SMB1 Crossover has a ton more content than SMB1 Nes. A load more.
      But......it's not really a fair game to put up against it.

    I agree, Sega 'should have' had this as an official release. I've no problem with SoR 4 or with LizardCube's art style (which worked right for Dragon's Trap), but gameplay wise it just didn't felt like the original games. In fact it had to be played like a modern game instead of a traditional beat-em-up.
    I'll give this one a go and see how it it...
