- A visit to Greece bagged a great variety of aircraft from many nations flying low in the valleys. A personal highlight was for myself to photograph an F-4 Phantom flying low level and with its retirement from the Hellenic air force due soon the clock was ticking. A second first was two capture not one but four Mirage 2000 again from the Hellenic air force flying in the valley. This was their first known low level run in their own country. Other aircraft to drop into the valley where,

What a treat seeing old F4 Fantoms still flying.
These are F-4's built in the 80's and were upgraded in the early 2000's with digital avionics . You can see the antennas on the air intakes and the targeting pod next to the cannon.

For those who are wondering: non smoking F-4 belongs to 339 squadron (callsign Aias) because it is an intercepting squadron and the smoking F-4 belongs to 338 squadron (callsign Ares) and it is a bombing squadron. All of our F-4 updated in 2000 with new avionics, radars, targeting pods, weapons and engines but before 2 years most of the non smoking engines came close to their end of life so the Hellenic Air Force took the decision that only the planes of the interceptor squadron will have the non smoking engines. Also a little correction: the Hellenic Air Force Mirage is 2000-5 Mk 2 version. Thank you for your excellent video and all these beautiful images and sounds!!

@@DafyddPhillips Cheers mate!The F-4's belong to the squadrons that when they will retire, they will be replaced by the F-35's. As my big brother is a pilot at the Hellenic Air Force you have to know that he feels very happy and respectful when people from other countries are coming to make videos and take photos like yours. Believe me they knew that you were all of you people there so they had fun by posing their planes!

I love how the F-4 comes in louder than any of them, belching smoke and shaking the ground. "Smile and wave boys, smile and wave."
As a South Korean, in the Republic of Korea Air Force, the F-4E Phantom is still in service, but it will retire soon. After 47 years of serving our country, the ROKAF F-4E Phantom will finally retire in June. I hope everyone congratulates the ROKAF F-4E Phantom on its retirement. The legendary aircraft F-4E Phantom will forever rest in peace. We will remember you forever, Phantom.
The F-4s would wake us up 50+ years ago when we camped in the summer near the Myrtle Beach AFB. What great memories you have provided! Thanks Dafydd! 😊

Some of those F-4's could have been my dad and my uncle, they went through F-4 training right at 49-50 years ago at Myrtle Beach!!

The F-4E II Phantoms, known as "Peace Icarus 2000," wearing the "Aegean Ghost" camouflage and are still celebrated for their fabulous and timeless design. Greece currently maintains 36 of these aircraft and plans to retire them once the first batch of F-35s is received in 2027. The Greek Air Force's history includes operating notable aircraft such as the Supermarine Spitfire, F-86 Sabres, Douglas C-47 Skytrain, Grumman HU-16 Albatross, Sikorsky H-19, Bell 47, Dassault Mirage F1, Lockheed T-33, Republic F-84F, Convair F-102 Delta Dagger, Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, Northrop F-5, A-7 Corsair II, and the RF-4E, which bore the "Vietnam" camouflage.
Love seeing the F-4's flying!!! My dad was a pilot for 50 years, flew both commercial/business aviation as well as for the Air National Guard, and of all the planes he flew, the Phantom was his absolute favorite!

Miss the old Phantoms. My grandfather was kinda running the upgrade/rework program at a base in San Diego until he retired in '73. Shah's people tried to recruit him to set up a similar facility before the fall in Iran. We had Phantoms, Skyhawks, Corsairs, Crusaders, occasionally a Skyraider, E2s,S3s, and a bunch of huge Seaplanes at NASNI. What a wonderful period....

Greece still flies about 35 of them in multi support roles
however the time when they too will be retired is drawing close
It's nice to see the smoky turkey still flying. I grew up watching USMC Phantoms and it brings back many happy memories of NOISE 😁

The Hellenic Air Force is among the best trained in the western world ! Greece is the only nation that has to fight daily “silent” air battles against our roque friends in the east. Neo-Ottoman Turkey .

grew up right outside where the phantoms were built. saw them all the time. still my favorite to see
I was a Phantom wrench back when they were frontline fighters with the United States Marine Corps (76-79 VMFA-333) MOS-6657

we did the first cruise on the USS Nimitz (a Med) Naples, Tangiers, Gibralter....... What a great way for a 19 year old to see the world.

Love the F-4E. It looks like a fighter. The drooping rear stabilizers, the bent up wing tips and that cannon on the long nose. My true favorite. Beautiful aircraft. Great record and obviously still holds a threat in some nations like Greece. Thanks for posting.

Didn't think there were any J-79 smokers left....all were upgraded to non-smoke (like the second Phantom). I guess those engines were waaaaaaay back in an old warehouse covered with cosmoline 😄 Pretty amazing to see the F-4s doing low level in 2024 !
F-4 Phantoms and smoke trails beat and will always do everything else in sight.

In 1970, I was in boarding school, and my family had recently come home from New Guinea, where my Dad was in Australian Army Aviation 183 Recce Flt at Lae. The F111 was due, but in the interim, Australia took a number of Phantoms. I was lucky to be at RAAF Amberley when they arrived from the US. I got to sit in one, and of course, the rest is Australian History. Again, great filming. BZ.
What a cracking location and footage!

Used to love seeing Phantoms screaming over our town at treetop level in the early '70s when I lived in the foothills of the Adirondacks.
Just like the Mach loop, except sunny and a different variety of jets 😊. Loved the smokin thunder hogs, can’t imagine there being that many more opportunities to film the venerable old brutes. Thanks Daffyd, top notch as always.

Do love me some f16s and f22 but there is still a lot of love for f4… that was the first fighter jet i saw closeup when I was 8 during the Pease AFB airshow. Some 50 years ago…so wanted to be a fighter pilot joined the USAF at 17 and did 28 years as an IT network engineer. And I still love the F4!! Thanks for vid of this beautiful timeless ole bird!

The Phantom is still a lethal bad ass fighter. Just because something is old does not make it obsolete.
The B-52. Exactly
they don't carry the newer missiles, and that's the only thing that makes them obsolete these days. And those old smoking engines. You don't even need a radar to detect them with those black smoke trails 🤣
@RAZEE77 The J79 turbojet engines can be replaced, as for the missles, some modifications can be done. Look at the B52, it's been updated to carry the latest hardware
@@gspiatti249 true, but I don't think they want to revive this program, they're focusing on the F35 these days. This one would need new AESA radar, frame modifications, complete cockpit changed, engines changed, I don't think it would be worth it.
@RAZEE77 True, that's why they want to junk the A10s to free up $$$ for the F35, but having the F35 for CAS duty would be a disaster if that plane got shot up.
