I was at the game in Edmonton when Gretzky broke Howe's record for the all-time points. An 2 minute standing ovation followed the record as well as Gretzky being presented with a plaque form the league, a diamond bracelet and a hologram.
Oh man I wish I was there too
Can you ever imagine a basketball player being this good and this humble?
Always been my favourite player. I like that he's been humble throughout his career, genuine, always made an effort, acknowleged his teammates, not egotistical, always respectful, had precision for the game and practised so much at a young age to reach his goal. When he was playing hockey at the age of 10 with 14-16 yr old boys he scored like 298-300 goals and alot of parents hated him which was horrible. He was a kid who worked hard every day before school, after school till his bedtime improving his hockey skills so he could play after. Those parents should not have bullied a child.
Lemieux is humble too... So were Bobby Orr and Gordie Howe.
Messier with tears on his eyes? What a class!that tells me that he loves Gretzky who gets all the attention! Great friend! I always admired him as a player and also as a person!
HE LOVES GRETZ...BECAUSE GRETZ IS A GOOD MAN. WHO SHARES HIS WEALTH WITH HIS TEAMMATES. WHEN HE WAS TRADED TO LA...MCNALL ASKED HIM ON THE PLANE TO LA..HOW MUCH HE WANTED. GRTZ WROTE 18.000.000 ON A NAPKIN. MCNALL SAYS I WAS THINKING 23.000.000. GRETZKY SAYS SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE WITH THE OTHER PLAYERS. TRUE DAT. HE GAVE CARS TO SEMENKO FOR PROTECTING HIM
@@michaelgoosemacdonald4758 you mean marty mcsorley?
Damn, I don't even watch hockey, but I'd be damned if I didn't cry. True Legend!!👏👏
never going to see another hockey player like this! nuff said.
Truth.
Enough
I have tears in my eyes when I see this. Amazing player and amazing person he is. Thank you Wayne. When I was child I was collecting hockey cards and theese cards told me about wonderful players as Wayne, but I fully understand what he was when I growe up.
Im pretty sure Gretzky comes back to Edmonton from time to time. He grew into a man in this city. He used to ride his bike to his practices. How humble is that. The Greatest !!!
Gretzky's skill level, vision and antcipation was so much better than anyone else's.
@Novocrine Gretzky finished his career with the most short handed goals in NHL history. And he had more assists than anyone had points. And he is the all time goal scoring leader.
Oh.
Unbelievable 1000+ points than anyone else.
Gretzky was an amazing skater. People dont give him credit for how fast he was down the ice.
Hits me right in the feels
I miss the NHL from back then.
Thank you for the video thank you, Wayne, you made us fly of admiration and joy each time you scored. yes Humans can be great
Growing up in Calgary in the 80's we had a great team.
But Edmonton had the best team in the world.
I was an Oilers fan, but the Flames scared the crap out of me more than any other opponent. What a great rivalry!
It was magical watching him as a kid
Indeed!
St Louis Blues fans are like, hey he was here too y'know!
Keenan drove him and Brett out of town. Keenan is the worst coach in NHL history. The guy wins 1 Stanley Cup in over 20 years of coaching depsite have stacked teams. And players hated playing for Keenan. He was a terrible human being.
And helped you not win a Cup, too. LOL............
Did y'all notice the 99 written on the ice behind the net in his final game. 5:11
That was a nice touch.
The greatest of ALL time !
🐐🐐🐐🐐Wayne Gretzky 🐐🐐🐐
Gretzky was a chess master on ice hockey skates!
still the King number 99 the great one :)
If I ever need to cry in a hurry I know where to come
G.O.A.T
The third goal in the all star 4 goal game, was passed to Gretzky by Doug Wilson in the corner. Messier was behind the net. Wilson’s hairdo gave it aay
Interesting to think I was born just in time to be alive for Gretzkys final 98-99 season. Was about 4-5 years old when he was at the heritage classic, both my parents went to that.
He and his mates took 2 cups away from my flyers in the 80’s but gotta give respect, where respect due, 99 was arguably the greatest player in his respective sport to ever live. His records will probably be never broken. He’s truly a living legend.
Arguably the best??? Probably never be broken??? ok buddy these are FOR SURES
Hawks Fan Lol yes
@Viktor Foltenyi Heres the thing though, Ovechkin is already scoring at unprecedented rates with his age, he would have to continue to do that for 300 more goals, can he do it? Sure but it will be completely unprecedented
There are only two SUPER STAR hockey players that will never be touched Number 1 GRETZKY number 2 LEMIEUX.
tell that to the Ovechkin lovers who seem to think that ovi is the best of all time😂🤣
Holy goosebumps...
Definitely the best
Sure was Coach!
I was there for the jersey retirement my mom bit me tickets as a kid I will never forget it
They won the Cup on May 19......about a month earlier than today
I cant stand how long the NHL season is today.
They need fewer Pre-Season Games,
and an earlier start to the Season as a whole.
I really do think that's the fix for Summertime-Stanley!
Peace.
As a Canuck fan, wow did they screw up that potential trade. What could have been? Making Gretzky sign that night when he said he would, has got to be the biggest blunder in nhl history (besides again with the Canucks, trading Cam Neely)
no doubt the greatest player
Sir Gretzky !!
We will never see hockey like that again or mabe in a few 1000 years..Gretz mess kur andi.ok and marty,,,,ther like elastic bands dammmmm are the fun to watch!!!!!!!!!!
Bradley Balshin Pgh Pens?
I dunno Mario Lemieux was pretty good.
@@justafanintexas7913 was no Gretzky though
@@tomlorenzen4062 - Gretzky never faced life-threatening illness, either, and Lemieux was every bit as good as Gretzky, just not as fortunate.
@@justafanintexas7913 Even at his best, in his prime, his numbers not as good...But yeah, he was phenomenal
Holy shit. I could have scored on these goalies. No wonder people were doing crazy numbers in the 80s.
Only one player (besides Lemieux & Gretzky) has ever scored more than 153 points in the 80s (or in history for that matter). And that only happened once (Steve Yzerman with 155 points in 1989). Gretzky did it 9 times, and Lemieux 3 times.
@@michaelgriffiths8068 yeah i know players in the 80's were trash. Also McDavid just scored 153 points this year against actual players and goalies.
@@jii-ro7083 - one point more (than 152)? Not even 155 lol
@@michaelgriffiths8068 Who cares. You said only one player expect 99 and 66 has scored over 152. Well that just is not true. Also 4th liners from 2023 could score 200+ points in the 80's
@@jii-ro7083 - and speaking of trash players, did you know that a past his prime 33 year old Gretzky (with a career threatening herniated disc injury) beat BOTH prime Sergei Fedorov and prime Pavel Bure in scoring to win his 10th scoring title (Art Ross Trophy)? How embarrassing for Fedorov & Bure to be grouped in with those 80s trash players that were not as good as Gretzky (especially since he was past his prime by that point).
The great Pelle Lindbergh getting lit up in the ASG
Gretz was what Bobby Orr would have been if he wasn't injured his mostly entire career.
watch todays stars and the amount of time the camera is on them the camera was on wayne the whole game
2000th point in Winnipeg??
He didn't break any records while he played for St. Louis??
Just think of how good the Islanders were since they beat Edmonton every time until 1984.
@Michael
Every time... once? In the 1982-83 Season?
You talking Playoffs? Or EVER?
Did I miss something?
Is there something Statistical...
that I do not know, understand, or am forgetting???
Throw me a bone here... err... a puck I mean.
The Oil DID stop the "Drive for Five", yes.
But, I be confused!
Get back, s'il vous plait? Merci!
PEACE! from Alberta, Canada.
@@darrenmeservia5578 The Islanders were the better team. Edmonton couldnt play with them until Islanders starting getting old. Then Edmonton starting winning. Reg Season and Playoffs.
@Michael
Deliberately vague? Or just don't want to answer? If you choose not to explain your original statement, that I commented on... well then never mind. Obviously you have nothing to back your statement.
Lousy video.what about
1) his 500th goal
2) his 2000th point
3) his 77th goal
4) his 153rd point breaking Esposito's seasonal record.
most short handed goals ill stop there i dont want to get carpel tunnel
Also the NHL retired #99, no player in the NHL will ever don that #, nor should they!
Go Detroit Redwings! Go New York Rangers! Go Boston Bruins! Go San José Sharks!
Th sad thing about this, is that you will never see this level of hockey again. Guys like Wayne and Mario come along once every 100 years, and the game was so much different back then. It was wide-open, aggressive, and exciting. Now all we see is interference, holding, guys sprawled all over the ice blocking shots, and hyper-conservative play. Back then it was the golden age, and now we are in the dark ages.
@Colin Higgins
Some Players are 1 offs.
Wayne Gretzky is one of those.
We will NEVER see the like of him again.
We just need be thankful that we were here,
as witnesses to History, and to Greatness.
Both on, and off the Ice!
Peace, from Alberta, Canada.
Would've been better with no music.
Messier is by far the best ALL ROUND PLAYER EVER
Look at Messier in his early years in Edmonton he sucked big time. If not for 99 they all sucked it's a fact.
Brad Gilker you may have your opinion even if it is braindead
Wayne cup cake gretzky....
CONNOR MCDAVID
SURE THINK ABOUT CONNER MCDAVID AGAINST THE SMALL GOALIES OF MY THE 1980'S AND THE SHIT SLOW D BACK THEN, MCDAVID, CROSBY, OVECHKIN WOULD HAVE SHATTERED RECORDS BACK THEN, DONT LIVE IN A FALSE REALITY, REMEMBER GRETZKY BROKE INTO THE NHL AT AGE 18,OVECHKIN DECIDED TO TURN PRO AT AGE 20 INTO THE NHL, LOOK AT MCDAVID'S SKILLS, SPEED ECT. AND OVECHKIN'S GOALS, GIMMIE A FUCKEN BREAK, GRETZKY PLAYED ON A STACKED FUCKEN HALL OF FAME ALL STAR FUCKEN TEAM AND ALL MCDAVID HAS IS LEON DRAISITAL, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT, IF YOU TOOK GRETZKY OFF THAT OILER TEAM AND REPLACED HIM WITH MCDAVID YOUR HEAD WOULD MELT AT THE FUCKEN STAT LINE MCDAVID WOULD PUT UP ON EVERY YEAR, EVERY NIGHT, GAME AFTER GAME, HE WOULD HAVE BROKE DARYL SITLER'S 10 POINT GAME RECORD FOR STARTERS, PERIOD, YOU'VE JUST BEEN SHUTOUT 🍺
