The star of ABC's "Fresh Off the Boat" and the controversial film "The Interview" sat down with Ellen for the first time to talk about his parents, acting roles and love of breakdancing.
His English is perfect. I think part of it is no one really knows much about him. They probably just wonder his background. He kind of came of no where. It's not like he is a child actor who came up in the industry.
jiimmy567 yep yep, sometimes I wish I didn't pick this kind of thing because I then realise it is amazing how people (usually Whites) are low key shading minorities all the time. By the way all the shows he has been to, the hosts always seem surprised he's American and grew up in America.
Yeah, sad to see it happen so frequently in Hollywood. Despite her remarks being quite ignorant, I wholeheartedly believe she didn't mean any insult by him - just an honest misperception. In terms of ignorance, this is probably like a 1/10 of how bad things can be.
That is not racist, whatsoever. Racism is thinking one race is dominant than another. In her case, being surprised that he was born and raised from LA isn't racist, it's just statistics on the percentage of Asian Americans that live in the LA area that contribute to her being surprised.
No one said Ellen was racist. Racial profiling and ignorance is different to racism. Also, there is a huge percentage of Asians in LA, and Asian actors.
Laura Greene She asked a lot about his parents..and how they felt about him being an actor + she literally was about to ask him if his dad worked. Still a little hurt that she asked him where he's from ._.
@Dalton - Actually the Chinese were here as early as 1800s and helped build the Transcontinental Railroad. Where do you get off stating that most Asians immigrated here? Why do you assume every Asian you see is a new immigrant? For instance, Kristi Yamaguchi is 4th generation Japanese-American. Yet people like her get asked all the time "Where are you from" when someone like Melania Trump or other white-skinned immigrants do not get asked that. -- Wow, and saying "most white people were born in America" shows how little you know (to put it very nicely) about America today, immigration, population, and history. Please go read some history books.
I don't blame Ellen and other interviewers for being so surprised that an asian american can be born here -its because Asians are severely underrepresented and the more we appear on Tele with a voice, the less frequently we'll hear the same questions over and over again. You go Randall!
ignorance is not an excuse. i hate how every interview with an asian american figure just turns into -where are you from -what did your parents think of your career
I really am happy that Asian American Actors are starting to break into the Entertainment Industry since we been so under looked as actors. Hopefully in near future.. It'll open more opportunities for talented actors in the Asian american community .
I remember first being introduced to Randall Park through Wong Fu shorts, and it's been great to see him land these other big roles in the Interview and Fresh Off the Boat. He seems very humble and genuine and does a lot to support the Asian American community. Excited to see what he does next!
I immediately went "wtf?" When she was surprised by him living in Los Angeles... Why is it so damn surprising? Were you expecting him to say China? Normally her videos are awesome but this one really made me twist my head. I know I'm late as hell but I don't care. I love the show and he's a funny character. All of them are. I don't know why it's surprising an Asian man is from LA.
To be fair lots of interviewees all people where they are from, it's not an insidious question. When I meet new people I often ask where they are from regardless of their racial make-up. It's interesting to know. Could it possibly that most people who act and live in LA aren't usually from LA and that's why she asked the question? She does ask a lot of her guests where they are from, especially if they aren't particularly well known.
SOOOO happy for randall! i would always see him in phone commercials and then BAM! he makes it big with the interview and fresh off the boat! YAY go randall!!!
To clear up some misconceptions… - The way interviews on talk shows work is that the guest, or guest's agent fills out a survey sent by staff of the show for the interviewer/writers to generate talking points. Watch interviews (on any talk show) where the interviewer, or interviewee is nervous, distracted, or awkward and you'll see that they transition in a conspicuous way from one talking point to another (the interviewer leading in situation-specific ways), as if it was all planned out and the interviewer already knew the answers to the questions he/she was going to ask. This questionnaire system is so shows that constantly interview guests (meaning there would be too many to prepare for in a non-factory-like way) can run smoothly; so the show can prepare, like when Ellen already had dolls to scare Channing Tatum. - Ellen and other interviewers ask about where Randall Park is from because it was noted as a talking point from the survey. This is either to associate Randall Park with the characters on the show (his character's three sons) he is promoting, or to note that he's from L.A., where all of this stuff is filmed (which is what makes it significant). Ellen was just trying to stress that Randall Park was from L.A., when she followed up with, "Here?" instead of somewhere like San Francisco. (Personally, I think Mr. Park has a very slight drawl that makes him sound southern (Floridian, Texan, something).) - Ellen asking about Randall Park's parents not liking that he went into acting is because she already knew from the questionnaire. There is racism, ignorance, and prejudice, but Ellen isn't guilty of it here. Ellen is more like a mischievous little boy (sometimes cruelly so) with the way she messes with people (like how she's always give Sofia Vergara a difficult time with her accent, or insists on scaring people who hate being scared). If you want to see an example of presumptuous, but non-malicious ignorance, check out Howie Mandel interview Girls' Generation on "Live with Kelly".
I am so crazy about Fresh off the boat! just spent almost 4 hours on watching all 13 episodes! Love Louis, Jessica,Eddie, Emery and specially cute boy Evan xD
Joey Chua so sick of the word police...get over it. He didn't mean anything by it....or to be simple for your simple mind....he had no ill intent in his words. Not only are they not teaching you social skills...but you cant even tell by his tone? get over it
Yeah, i agree. I haven't seen any racist comments either lol So in that case, here is my sexist comment... I can only assume that this is some broad looking for attention.
OMG!!! I love fresh off the boat!!! It's got a distinct idk 'everbody hates chris' vibe to it and its very genuine along with being funny. (I can relate since even though I'm a Pakistani-American my parents are very Asian through and through - the mum on that show was basically my mum growing up :P) definitely prefer it to other shows like modern family........
I can see how people perceived Ellen's question about where he was from as insensitive and ignorant. I know EXACTLY what it's like being in his shoes. Every time I tell someone I'm from the US, they give me a funny look and then I explain to them my parents are from South Korea and then their faces look more satisifed. It's quite sad honestly haha I'll never understand why people just don't ask what ethnicity one is instead. On the other hand, Randall Park makes me proud to be Korean American! He seems super chill!
Ellen can you please have Jay Park on your show?? He's the first korean asian to sign with Jay-Z label Roc Nation. Jay Park have two songs out "Ben Baller" & K-Town 😍💞🔥👏🙌
Damn it Ellen why you got to be the stereotype white American who ask Asian Americans where are you from. He has a wiki page and clearly he's lived in the US for ages.
Hi Ellen your a inspiration I wish I could be on your show me and my little brother love dub smash and we are really good at doing it Ellen please let us be on your show and a lot of people make fun of me a lot and my talking to you it would make me smile for the rest of my life
I LOVE this show. He and Constance Wu are so awesome (the kids are not great, but meh). I like the cultural difference jokes, and oddities. Is this racist? I don't know, but what I do know is that most sitcoms represent some kind of demographic which we laugh at. The Jewish mother, the untogether girlfriends, the uptight English, This show wouldn't work if the acting and writing weren't sharp and tight. Far as I know, Asian actors don't get many chances at all. If anime is made with gaijins playing the Japanese roles, that tells me how racist the media still is. And they're all called "asian". Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, Thai, Vietnemese- billions of Asians never on USA tv screens. This show is breaking a bit of ground.
He is a great actor and he seems like a nice guy. Fresh off the boat is an awesome tv show!! :)
Shaenova1 Fresh off the boat is so funny and is incredibly underrated I think!
Shaenova1 what is the of his show tell me please
Shemoo Angle The name of the show is Fresh Off The Boat.
thank you
This man is so pleasant and has such a beautiful smile. I like him already!!
DArtagnan010 he looks like a very nice guy
Nearly every talk show host has asked him where he grew up and was surprised he was born and raised in America haha.
Sigh, yeah, story of every Asian American's life. =/
AverageJoe I can relate
First question they have ask Randall...
Jimmy Kimmel: Where are you from?
Ellen: Where did you grow up?
It may be insensitive but to be fair he doesn’t play an American on the show. He’s Taiwanese (Chinese) on the show.
His English is perfect. I think part of it is no one really knows much about him. They probably just wonder his background. He kind of came of no where. It's not like he is a child actor who came up in the industry.
I love Randall Park! He's so talented, funny & makes people really comfortable.
Why is Ellen so surprised he was raised in LA? Get it together Ellen.
Somegirl10192 RACIST!
Sopranoprince28 I don't think she is racist, but it does suck that she doesn't even realize what she is doing.
Somegirl10192 because a lot of famous celebrities were not born and raised in LA
ButterfleeEllie No, it's because he is Asian. I am a japanese-german-italian mix and people think I come from fucking Taiwan, dipshit. :)
+Sopranoprince28 hahahahah! you are perfect!
they always ask about parents when there are asian guests on.
+Sam LSD what's wrong with the comment?
Sam LSD its just an observation that this person made.
Nancy J because he's in american tv. if an american is in korean tv, they would do the same. wehre's your common sense?
Jay-R Reyes he's an American actor on an American tv show.
Sam LSD I wasn't sure before, but now I am certain you're a troll
low-key racial-profiling?
jiimmy567 She acted so surprised that he was raised in L.A.
jiimmy567 yep yep, sometimes I wish I didn't pick this kind of thing because I then realise it is amazing how people (usually Whites) are low key shading minorities all the time. By the way all the shows he has been to, the hosts always seem surprised he's American and grew up in America.

No one said Ellen was racist. Racial profiling and ignorance is different to racism. Also, there is a huge percentage of Asians in LA, and Asian actors.
Ellen was being slightly ignorant with the questions, you'll never see her ask those to a white actor
I agree, this interview made her seem somewhat ignorant and stereotypical
Laura Greene you've never seen a white actor in an interview asked where they're from? I guess you don't watch many interviews then.
ButterfleeEllie You obviously didn't hear the interview almost every question was insensitive
Laura Greene She asked a lot about his parents..and how they felt about him being an actor + she literally was about to ask him if his dad worked. Still a little hurt that she asked him where he's from ._.
***** yeah, and she was so shocked to find out he's american
It's really annoying when white people ask you, "No, where are you REALLY from?" Or worse, when they literally just say, "What _are_ you?"
Please go read some history books.
Ask them what they are.
There need to be more Asian people on television so people realize we exist
R. K. Vis Why are you taking everything so negatively?
You know what’s more annoying? When someone clumps white people together as racially insensitive.
I don't blame Ellen and other interviewers for being so surprised that an asian american can be born here -its because Asians are severely underrepresented and the more we appear on Tele with a voice, the less frequently we'll hear the same questions over and over again. You go Randall!
cozycushins YEAH I STRONGLY AGREE
VIRTUAL HIGH FIVE
+barnes 77 She meant earth, cause most Asians come from outer space.
+cozycushins Yeh it happens... Sometimes though, people assume I'm from the west coast. I'm like I've never even been there.
ignorance is not an excuse. i hate how every interview with an asian american figure just turns into -where are you from -what did your parents think of your career
I really am happy that Asian American Actors are starting to break into the Entertainment Industry since we been so under looked as actors. Hopefully in near future.. It'll open more opportunities for talented actors in the Asian american community .
Hyori Lee Did you forget about Lucy Liu?
Randall: "Dad I know what I wanna be when I grow up, an actor".
Dad: "No stupid it's pronounced doctor."
Jessica Lentz That's literally what my dad used to say. I'm Indian.
@@TheHumanBallsack You are indian and your last name is Juan
I remember first being introduced to Randall Park through Wong Fu shorts, and it's been great to see him land these other big roles in the Interview and Fresh Off the Boat. He seems very humble and genuine and does a lot to support the Asian American community. Excited to see what he does next!
As an Asian-American I can relate so much to this show lol
I LOVE FRESH OFF THE BOATTTTTT
Need to see more of him! born comedian.
Why is everyone asking him where he's from i feel like its just getting cliché and stereotype
its a subtle way of degrading him everyone walks in the club but he has to show his id
Three Crowned lol i was just wondering why bcz its so weird
there would never ask a euro chick that
this dude is 41 by the way.... i cant believe it!!
+Amisse Baras you have to be extremely lucky to become an actor. he didn't get his big break till he was 40.
i know... i meant he looks really young for his age
+Amisse Baras I mean...I can. He looks it. Doesn't mean he looks bad.

Yup. I caught that. Right ON THE NOSE. With that.

Ellen is an American? Always considered her Australian
I remember some teen movies in the 80s that we called valley girls and surfers. Does anyone recognized where this accent is from?
