- Vasai Fort or Fort Bassein is now a ruined fort in Vasai, Maharashtra. The structure was formally christened as the Fort of St Sebastian in the Indo-Portuguese era. The fort is a monument of national importance and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Here are some of the funfacts related to Vasai Fort:
FunFact #1: History of Vasai Name
The present name Vasai is derived from the Sanskrit word Waas, meaning 'dwelling' or 'residence'. The name was changed to Basai, which was named under Bahadur Shah of Gujarat after the Gujarat Sultanate took over the region. This is also the first Latinized record of the name, which was spelt as Baxay by Barbosa (1514). The name was short-lived as it was changed under Portuguese rule, approximately two decades later, to Baçaim (also first official Latin name) following the signing of the Treaty of Baçaim in 1534. This name was again changed after over 200 years to Bajipur, after the Maratha Empire took over the region. This name was also short-lived as after the capture of Bajipur (the Maratha name for Vasai) by the British, the name was changed yet again to Bassein. During this same time, Bombay took over Bassein as the dominant economic power in the region. The town was renamed to Vasai, the Marathi name for the region, following the devolution of the British Raj in India.
FunFact #2: Why Vasai is so important?
Due to it's connect with Arabian sea, it opens up route for global exports. Infact Portuguese named vasai it's northern capital due to it's strategic importance
FunFact #3: Battle of Vasai
In the 18th century, the Bassein Fort was taken over by the Maratha Empire under Peshwa Baji Rao's brother Chimaji Appa and fell in 1739 after the Battle of Vasai. The fort was taken by British in 1774 and returned to Maratha in 1783 under the Treaty of Salbai. The British in 1818 attacked and again took over the territory from the Marathas. The fort also played a strategic role in the First Anglo-Maratha War
FunFact #4: The fort is also a popular shooting location for Bollywood movies and songs. The Bollywood hit ″Kambakkht Ishq″ from Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, Poster Lagwa Do from Luka Chuppi are Bollywood songs short at the fort. Movies such as Josh, starring Shah Rukh Khan, and Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega have a number of scenes from the fort. Other films shot here include Khamoshi and Ram Gopal Verma's Aag. The fort was also one of the shooting locations for the international hit song 'Hymn for the Weekend' by British band Coldplay.

Their are 2 gates and from sea side gate there is a door which was broken by the chimaji appas beloved e elephant .but because of the big nails in the door the head of elephant was dameged and he dide but he broke the door .
Things to see more in vasai fort are -
1 giant nail door broke by chimaji appas elephant.
2 . Chakri jinna (round stairs which give u to best sea view )
3. Jail aria of fort
4. Gonsalo garsiya church in vasai fort 😀
5. Bounty wall of fort near sea side (from stairs ) and u get a fantastic view 🤩
6 . Old square well in fort
7. Under ground which opens for one day in every five years.

Vasai Fort Tour Is Incomplete Without Visiting Veer Chimanji Appa Smarakh (statue)🙏🚩🧡
So nice I love visit to historical place
There were 5-6 more beautiful places to explore in vasai fort
1. Chimaji Appa Statue at the entrance. There's a real good place to chill at the back of the statue and also a small pond which looks great during the monsoon
2. Vasai Dock, the place to witness the Arabian sea which also has a small mosque at its entrance
3. There's also a place at the very entrance left side, stairs that takes you to a beautiful scenic beauty, sunset and sunrise view along with a beautiful ocean view from the top and right side there's one more fort, cold play song you mentioned is shot there. (bus takes you a little ahead you'll have to come a little backward 'walking' to explore these places)
4. There's an entire village inside at the end of the fort at one side and other side there's also an ancient church
Do make a part 2 of these unexplored places in vasai fort if possible. They are surreal believe me

Vasai ke kille mai Maratha aur Portuguese ke bich ladhai hui jisme Portuguese ke har hui aur woh Portuguese ne Maratha ke samne surrender kiya aur woh ship mai baithkar Goa chale gaye.

All the big gates and doors you saw were churches. There are total 7 churches in the fort. The vasai fort is really huge.. With border wall surrounding it.

Amazing video, these were all one fort not three different and this is only the 25% of the remaining fort there are still some remains of the fort on the left side of the main road toward Jetty.

Sorry Rupesh, I have no idea. I went there in December and that time no permission was required, neither no one was there to say anything (apart from 1-2 guard in this huge place)

In train from your boarding location to vasai road (say 30 min), then 30 min from station to fort by bus and then 1 to 1:30 hour is more than enough at fort . You can capture quite a lot of photos.
