  • Canada Vignettes - Port Royal
This is the story of the first French settlers in North America, who spent their first winter on an island in the Bay of Fundy. Despite overwhelming hardships the survivors, joined by other new colonists, eventually established Port Royal, the foundation of Acadia and the Acadian people.

Cool. I have ancestors who were born in Port Royal in the late 1630s and 1640s. I didn't realize the colony was that young at the time.

What I love about this vignette is here they just barely survived starving and freezing to death and with absolutely no economic infrastructure or tourist trade to speak of but they build a bloody hotel complete with all the amenities out in the middle of nowhere; awesome! Do you think that maybe there might be a clue in this story as to why the French lost Canada?

I suppose most of France's problems was simply being to far up north in the New World than to settle in a warmer climate down south.
