A Roof Over Your Head? The failure of transitional housing for Gisborne whānau | The Hui 2022

  • Transitional housing is an ongoing reality for whānau such as Cheyenne Denhem, Mohi Gerrard, Levi Williams, and Te Rina Takarua who have been trying to cope in motel rooms and other unsuitable housing with their children. They want to know why they're still there, and say the system is failing them. Organisations like Manaaki Moves, and housing advocate from Turanga Health Tuta Ngarimu are trying to help solve the problem.
Made with support from Te Māngai Pāho and NZ On Air.

It would also help if our Government started looking after our own people.. instead of replacing them..and catering for Refugees from war torn countries.... Homelessness has gotten worse ..where many HNZ homes have been given to Refugees..and our own people put in Motels or Homeless on the Streets... Forgotten people..is so True..Looking our own should come first..

My neighbor owns a local bakery. He tried for nearly a year, giving Kiwi's a try to help in the bakery, getting up at 3am to bake. No one lastest more than a week, it was too hard, too tiring for young people. He has now brought in people from Cambodia, and they are happy to work. Some jobs just don't suit New Zealanders, so foreigners need to come in to do the jobs. Same with farm jobs, Kiwi's are too tired to do them. When you come from a poor country with very little, you are more willing to work. Kiwi's seem to be too spoilt to work hard

Problem is our hospitals and caring professions are woefully understaffed and these new immigrants bridge a critical gap. Governments can look after, but also too much looking after can have the unintended consequence of having people feel a lack of agency right from adolescence.

And you can’t expect your own children to grow up and be independent and hard working if what they see growing up is the norm. The same thing when your family parties all day everyday, people drunk everywhere all the time, why you would expect your kids not to drink get drunk and do all that when that’s what they’ve seen all their lives. You the parents are teaching your children to be less then. You are teaching your children to sit around and wait for hand outs. The issue at hand is having 8 kids on the welfare system then wanting free social housing. The dad is capable of making babies but not working.

@@Dude6767I am in Aussie and my husband has had trouble with the Govt here it’s a whistle blower story.Ardern was aware of what they were doing to us to cover their corruption, she promised him a passport on more than one occasion and failed to deliver.Your new PM has been brilliant safe to say he has stepped up to do what a leader should do for a Kiwi in trouble overseas. You might hear this story if they start arresting these creeps. As I like to say they picked on the wrong Kiwi when they targeted my family.

4 years!! He needs to stand up and be a man. You’ve had 4 years to work hard to get out of that position. I came from nothing and only hard work and going to school at night while working fulltime got me out of poverty. You do what you have to do 🤨
