    Hellloooooo!! Here's a video about how to create a capsule wardrobe. I really hope that this video helps you understand how to start a capsule wardrobe by answering 3 or 4 simple questions that you can apply for life.
    Do any of you actually HAVE a capsule wardrobe? Was it hard to achieve??

      KarenBritChick I have tried - but think it is quite hard, but was in between - the "I'm not a girl, not yet a woman"-stage 😂 . The three/four questions, you highlighted is awesome! 👌🏻 I always try to keep my amount of clothes small, but good and in my style.

    this, for me, is the first and only time the concept of a capsule wardrobe has ever been explained this well. Its been like Narnia before now - its there but you don't have the cohesive magic to unlock a damn thing. So you sit with your black cardigan and white shirt and black ballet flats staring at the rest of your 'un-capsule' (colorful!) looking wardrobe wondering why you cant get it. These questions are what was missing! A capsule is who you are. What you most gravitate towards and feel/look best in. You build basics within that concept. You are a real fashion fairy Karen. Thanks for throwing your gold dust around you magical woman.

      Yes! All the capsule videos I've seen are devoid of colour, patterns and what I consider fun clothing (e.g. Frills, embroidery, embellishment etc). This is most of my sense of style, but I managed to make a capsule this week 🙂 It has all the colour and fun I love so much!

    I have (finally) learned to buy clothes for the life I actually live and for my real lifestyle -- which is casual. It may be different degrees of casual ( from very casual to dressy casual) but it's casual. It's casual for work, casual for play -- even mostly casual for going out. The few rare times that I wear something very dressy in formal (maybe half a dozen or less times a year) doesn't require me to have lots of dressy things. and no matter how sparkly and pretty and seductive they look on a hanger, I don't need them and won't wear them.

    I think one important thing to consider is who does your laundry and how often. That can change the color palette a lot. For instance, I wanted to keep a few red/orange items in my capsule so my second set of towels and pillow cases is also red so that I can wash them together and I don't have to do handwashing.

    You really nailed this topic, and I wish I had seen this video YEARS ago. For some reason, it took me so long to learn everything you covered here, and I had to make every rookie mistake along the way before I finally GOT it.
    I first became interested in dressing well about a year and a half ago. I was so lost and going about it all wrong. I started the process from the entirely wrong mindset - basically focused on other people's perception of me and acquiring all the generic pieces I thought I was supposed to have, instead of creating a wardrobe that actually felt like ME and fit my lifestyle.
    While I wish I had discovered your channel and this video sooner, I'm not sure your words would have resonated with me back then because I was truly a fashion beginner (ie didn't even know what a loafer was, etc). While you do explain things extremely well, I do think your content is for the slightly more advanced style enthusiast (I mean that as the highest compliment). On second thought, I think I found your channel at the perfect time in my style journey. Thank you for your high quality, informative, inspiring content!

  • @Teverell
    @Teverell Před 4 lety +1

    I think one of the things with the majority of channels talking about capsule wardrobes is that they seem (well, my impression is, rightly or wrongly!) to be made by women who have cool skintones, so they gravitate towards having blue in their wardrobes. I'm warm-toned - autumn - and have to be pretty careful about wearing blue so can't really have it as a neutral in a wardrobe that works for me.
    A capsule wardrobe being the core of *who you are* - that makes so much sense. Using that as a starting point, with the aim being to have pieces that work together to make an outfit... I think I can manage that!
    Thank you, from a fellow Brit who discovered this video two and a half years after you put it up!

    I love it - not everyone thinks the basic black suit with the button down shirt is particularly creative or stylish. I think basics need to be a large part of our wardrobe but then fill in with exactly what you are describing, pieces that exemplify who we are and what we do and where we go. Most of what is being shown as a capsule wardrobe is exactly the same: the striped tee, button down shirts and trench coat. I love all those things but I don't want only those things - then I'll look just like my neighbor who is doing the capsule wardrobe!!

    That's the best video on the issue I've ever seen because it's not that standard rant about minimalism that tries to force every woman into the same beige or grey garments.
    I don't use a capsule wardrobe myself but I frew up with the idea of a "basic wardrobe" one can build upon. That's a very similar and useful idea, only without the restrictions.

  • @latinaalma1947
    @latinaalma1947 Před 5 lety +1

    I just revisited these issues and I think it helps those of us who are not the total stylistYOU are, to do this from time to time. Because of where I live as a retiree I can get many of last season's fashions or even this season toward the end of the season, super super cheap...like cents on the dollar. AS a result, I now also have an extensive wardrobe. I have gotten good at going only for what fits me REALLY well and also fits my lifestyle and my existing wardobe. Now when I buy things, I bring them home and BOOM I have at least half a dozen things to wear them with and can style it all sorts of ways. This comes from knowing your style, your lifestyle, and your colors that best suit you. It really becomes amazing over time. Today I was trying on the four or five summerweight tops I had just bought and found wow...they all , every single one, work for me with lots of things..now THAT I consider a great success. Even though I only pay like $4,00 for almost every item I buy here (except shoes and boots and very pricey items like designer brand things) it really used to piss me off when I made a mistake and had to give items away straight away. Well that is not happening anymore ,which means i have really developed some skills on CZcams with your good advice and a few others. I will never be the gifts sylist YOU are, but I am oh so much better than I was just a couple of years ago. THanks SO much fo rhte education re style....it has made my life so much more fun and richer in retirement than I ever dreamed it could be. Way way more fun than my 20's, 30, 40s which were nose to the grindstone to get ahead in life.

I'm so glad they are figuring out that those of us fuller figured women have money and will spend it! and more importantly don't want to wear a sack! I love fashion and find that since so many trends are not translated into clothing for larger sized women, that I have to create the look on my own by shopping vintage, in the men's department or thrifting. Quicha Jones .. I think the room fuller figured is much more descriptive than curvy - because a thinner woman can be curvy too. I'm very slender - and I'm also curvy - because my bust measurement is about 10 inches more than my waist and my hips are 10.5 inches more than my waist.

      Meant to be " term" - not "room" ha. That's auto dictation for ya. What I meant to say was that whenever I hear curvy I think of fuller figured women, but I see curvy, hourglass figures that are thin, fuller and everything in between. (Sorry, that's the scrabble loving, word loving, linguist and college prof. in me. I can get overly picky with words sometimes.)

    Thank you so much for your advice. I appreciate this very much because I am planning to downsize my clothing to create a clutter-free drawer. 😂 I also find it hard to spend much time deciding on what to wear. I'm a high school public school teacher and I am somehow required to have casual and formal type of clothing. I am struggling a bit on how to create a minimal wardrobe out of it because I am a tshirt-and-jeans lover as well. Sooo right now I have declutterd my stuff (since 2018), and I am left with 2 midi skirts, 7 dresses, 7 jackets (because I travel to work everyday), 5 jeans, 4 trousers, quite a few shirts, a few pieces of lounge wears, 7 pairs of Pjs, quite a few footwears ranging from slippers to flat shoes to high heels to rubber shoes. There are still a few items i need to declutter but right now im quite happy of what i have. ❤️💛🧡

    I would love a video on color. I am a bright spring (needs high contrast) and generally, even though I am pale I need very strong color (to not disappear). I agree with the high contrast aesthetic though and do tend to wear a lot of black and high contrast combos. It's mixing the color with the neutrals that can be a challenge to get just right, although I am not shy to wear a lot of bright color.
    Loved your fall haul video and just found a grey mens blazer that I bought. I cannot believe that I haven't bought one before, it is such a perfect versatile piece. I used to have a dove grey linen men's suit that I wore all the time and I just loved it and how it fit. I am tall and have very long legs so mens clothes (even shoes) sometimes fit me amazingly well. I like to be able to look a little formal at times but I absolutely hate Women's suits and how they fit. I'm considering a men's tuxedo.

    Buying for myself, my lifestyle, and not some fantasy person is one of the most challenging pitfalls for me. Ironically, it's partly due to reading so many blogs about what a capsule wardrobe should look like, and it's always the same core pieces for someone who works in an office and lives a far more glamorous lifestyle than I do. Also, I admittedly sometimes use clothes shopping as a form of escapism and fantasize about the person I "should" or could be.

    Loved that you didn't tell me I needed a leather moto jacket, a navy blazer, white blouse and ballet flats. I love those items and wore them once upon a time. But, now, I'm retired and live in tropical Florida, where I do not need any jacket. Where I live, most women wear colorful, usually blue tunics and white shorts or capris. I only need sandals unless I'm going to the gym. My husband and I joke on 'cold"(maybe 69 degrees) days, that we'll have to put on closed toe shoes. For me, that's a really awesome pair of floral Superga sneakers that I bought about 3 years ago. My "uniform" consists of linen or cotton tops and wide legged linen pants. Any color will do as long as it's blue! I really enjoy your enthusiasm and would probably listen to you read the phone book.

    Your advice is amazing!! I'm tired of people telling you get clothes that will last you a long time when trends and fashion come and go. Plus most women like to rid of there clothes after a while.

  • @betterlifebroadcasting7547

    Loved the video! Thank you for not trotting the old neutrals only line of B.S. out. One other thing that will always tell you if you've managed to create a GREAT capsule wardrobe is... It will not look like a capsule wardrobe! It will just look polished and put together and like YOUR FAVORITE STUFF! I hate it when one of my friends creates a capsule wardrobe and without even really thinking about it, you KNOW that's what they did.. so much beige and gray everywhere.. ugh.

    Wonderful summary of how to build a wardrobe that will suit you best. I'd love to see separate videos about color, flattering different body shapes, classic styles and cuts, and the power of accessories. Color drives my mood so much. I've decorated my home with fabulous warm colors but my wardrobe is still not quite there. Thanks!

    Karen, your POV is spot on! I haven't watched many videos on capsule wardrobes, but many of the articles I've seen lists the same items, which are truly classic, however none that I've read speak about one's lifestyle or aesthetic. I almost got worried because my style is a little bit of all of which you described. I'm not sure there's a good name for it. Glad to see my wardrobe isn't the only one suffering from identity issues. 😂

      ha ha!! Yes I watch these TV segments or mag articles and have over time thought that it's the same old same old which is not what we are: we are individual and so a capsule wardrobe content is a different thing to each person

      Quicha Jones Be proud of your eclectic tastes! So much more interesting then as Karen said "the same old, same old", which personally bores me to tears👎 I'd much prefer having interesting clothes, accessories! I'm a rebel, a freak and damn proud of it, and have the wacky, diverse wardrobe that reflects that! My go-to pieces aren't the suggested "norm", they're what I love and suits me. Sounds like you fall into that category as well. Brava👏 for being and staying an individual, not a cookie cutter clone-drone👎! 🌺⚡️Jet

    Thank you so much. This perspective is very helpful. I've been putting off creating a capsule wardrobe because all other recommendations are focused on black, white and other neutrals, all of which look terrible against my pale cool tone skin, so i dont like wearing them, especially near my face. I've recently learned that cool dark rich or subdued colors make me look and feel fabulous, especially navy, aubergine, teal and red. The contrast is beautifully striking in a way I had never imagined. Breaking away from bad style/color advice has been difficult, now that I know how great I can look I will never wear frumpy styles or pastel colors ever again. Thanks Love 😊

    Great tips! Some months ago I cleared out my wardrobe and moved towards a capsule-esque approach to wearing and buying pieces. It's given me great insight into what I wear, what I like and don't like, what I do and don't need etc. My wardrobe fits my life style for sure, although I now think it's probably too casual (I just finished university :P). Not yet sure how to change that up....

    With capsule I’ve always seen stuff like leather jackets/blazers/denim jackets/black-nude pumps/white T-shirt ect. But I’d never wear them, but I did try go out and find a denim/leather jacket anyways, now I know my style really never changes, I’m a skinny jeans and T-shirt person, I never wear high heels, i never wear plain white T-shirt’s (I feel like I look washed out, I prefer black) I prefer cardigans ect that are way different than the cookie cutter wardrobe I try to insert into my starter capsule

    I do have a capsule!! I took everything out of my wardrobe, placed the items I absolutely loved: which actually defined my style (boho/Rock/basics neutral), I looked at the material, the fit on my body.. Had the piles of the MAYBEs and the NOs. And decided from the MAYBE what was needed in order to do outfit with what I had in my YES pile.. The rest went on the NO pile. It can take a few capsule to master it and to know what to reach for when buying. Since I don't buy as much.

    I think you helped solidify my problem. I'm going from happy massage therapist ->accident->brain injury ->eventual loss of arm -> doing something about it -> mechanical engineering student THEN to a likely 9 to 5 and I'm completely foreign to all of it. Given that if I go through another 7 years in college, and that at the end of college when it comes time ti interview I need to be comfortable. Add that I'm fairly minimalistic. And you've got a recipe for me wanting to buy 2 new garments every semester that will turn into my post education engineering job look. The problem is that with the brain injury I'm re learning who I am, and I am VERY different post injury.
