    To be fair.... The Vegas are a folded horn design, not a front loaded box. They are not meant to be heard from 20' away as they are meant to be a mid throw box. Put those speakers outside and listen to them from 50 - 75 feet away and i'm sure you'll have a different take. Also, there main intention was to be used in a 3 or 4 way system, for larger dances and festivals of upwards of 2000 people. They were NEVER designed to take into a small hall and used as a single sub for 100 - 200 people.

      I used some around 10 years back at an outdoor gig of around 15k people as mid field delays
      I do remember they were really heavy compared to the duel 18 short throws we normally used but because of the throw pattern and the layout we used no one complain they could hear it and it was deep and punchy throughout the whole venue

      After doing club installs for a while, cerwains can sound good but no where close to a modern front loaded design if they are tuned to the same level. My absolute favorites are Martin audio black line 218s or funktion one 32"s as they both just give bone shattering low end.

  • @DJILLEE
    @DJILLEE Před 5 lety +127

    Unfortunately it's extremely difficult to shootout subwoofers. Placement in the room (such as the d.a.s. so far off the floor) plays a MAJOR roll in how they sound. The rcf sitting in the corner is going to sound like a lot more volume since it couples in the corner. It adds 6db of volume but can also sound less defined there. The folded horn design (which is what I use) is great when you put a high pass and a low pass filter on them. 106dbs at 1 watt... theyre extremely efficient and DO sound great if you know how to use them.

    I always chuckle when I see these videos and comments. As an degreed engineer and 20+ year turntablist, I have a great suggestion for those searching for a PA system. Decide what type of events you will do, determine what music you will play to understand what your sub high pass will be (i.e. EDM will need 25hz capable), and save to purchase top of the line so that you make one good investment. Do your homework. Danley Sound Labs and JTR Speakers should be at the top of your list. Good luck.

  • @DJFriendZone
    @DJFriendZone Před 5 lety +24

    The dual SRX is the best you can get in its price range. It's not as "punchy" as the KW181, but that can easily be fixed with eq; a little bump in the 100-200Hz range. Those SRXs are designed to have a flat frequency response which is why they aren't as boomy or punchy as others. By default, its more smooth and deep. I spent over a year trying different subs before I got them.

  • @partymonkeydjs4950
    @partymonkeydjs4950 Před 5 lety +14

    Something else that wasn't discussed on the video is that you need to consider your application for subs. For most of the weddings I do I just use 2 12" subs. (EVolve 50s) The sound hits hard on the dance floor and then dies 30' away. This allows guests to be able to speak to each other, and reduces any sound bleeding into other rooms of the hall. (The Cerwin Vegas probably didn't start sounding good until 30' as they are meant for large venues. ) If you are using 15" speakers for your mains you probably don't even need a sub for most events. But on those larger gigs, you gotta love having those 18" pounding out the bass.

      Agree'd hence why i am downgrading my mids to 2 x 10 inchers with horns and a 12 inch subwoofer instead of 2 x 15's(80 pounds each) and 2 x 18's or even dual 18's sometimes too much carry work and way to much overkill for events of 150 people or less.

JBL price is about $2000 Rcf about $3500. The Rcf might go alittle bit lower just a bit In the Low Frequency Output. But the JBL is $1500 Cheaper and sounds amazing Also .that's why I believe the JBL Srx 828sp is the best bargain for the money and the one to beat :) cheers and very good Video and Very good Choice you did in the Sub you picked.

    Why did they say the Cerwin was deep - the JBL and RCF were but the Cerwin vega was more punchy and kick bin - and tended to honk a bit if the crossover let any vocals through. The horns aren't very long on them compared to a Danley or JTR box so they don't go that low unless in a confined space without a low cut.

    Sigh... DJ Barr... I hope you please take what Im about to say with a grain... You're a talented DJ, and put on some amazing weddings... You stick to what you know, and theres nothing wrong with that. But your knowledge of speakers is laughable.
    I really doubt you could tell me the difference between a folded horn, and a front load subwoofer... Which would be why you thought that FH Cerwin-Vega sounded bad in that room. A pair of those, outside for a big event, would put those JBL's to shame. The RCF's more than likely sounded best, because they're in a corner, and the JBL's were the loudest because there are 2, rather than 1, like the rest of them (another unfair comparison). That Cerwin-Vega CVE18 on the other wall would be a better comparison with the other subs, than the Earthquake would have been (The CVE will get lower than anything you compared as well).

      True indeed about those Vega's outside. I had a set of V35's 3-ways back in the day and the air moving without the woofer was amazing. Benefit of the doubt I know a dude with a pair of those JBL's and matching Tops and they Will Blow Your Drawers Off Violently ;- )

      The problem is nearly all (not all) mobile djs and even equipment shop owners knowledge of the physics of audio is extremely limited, they are not audio engineers or designers, I guess that's why the likes of rcf ev etc build complete plug and play rigs ready to go straight out of the box.

    i made so many experiments, by following some stupid advices from difrent people, till find the brand and model that satisfy my needs.. be careful at my mind... the best speaker is that one that satisfy your needs, not that one that are fancy, expensive and something else

    i just got an RCF 8004 over a bassboss sp118 for these reasons, form factor, used market is more accessible if i want to add more, RCF is designed by an italian company that has been in buisines for years so the featurs and service in the future will be more reliable than different brands, plus I just went to an excision show that was huge and they used about 15 dual 18 rcfs to push it and it sounded great.

    For home, not DJ/sound reinforcement, I'm still using a JBL B-380 15" passive sub, which I purchased in 1986. It's powered by a Sony TA-N80ES power amp operating in bridged mode for 560 watts into 8 ohms. The reason I have not upgraded is there is no upgrade, this sub gets the job done, for music and video. It goes down to 24 Hz -6db. I do not know of any commercial music which has any bass content below that arena. My mains go down flat to 35 Hz (JBL L100t3's) so I have set my crossover to 60Hz taking some strain off the L100's. I have a huge dance music collection on iTunes which this sub rocks; and, I like KM Music shuffle dance videos too which this sub makes more enjoyable. The point is: look for this sub on the used market and you will be very happy. Also, current JBL 18" passive subs from the professional cinema line are awesome too. You can get one of those for not much more than $1000 and run it with a Crown stereo amp operating in bridged mode for about a $1.00 per watt.

    Another video on "what" speaker to use vs "how" the speaker is used.
    The speaker being used matters FAR less than HOW it is used.
    Junk used properly will outperform good stuff used with the set it and forget mentality.
    The phrases that stick out to me:
    "I don't use subs that often"
    This is a phrase used by folks who do not understand sound. You are confusing quantity (volume) with quality. Bass is your foundation to the listening experience. The bass does not need to be chest pounding. When you look at house, no one says "look at the foundation". Its the cool siding, brick, layout etc. Inexperienced people say "you don't need subs" because they don't understand how sound works.
    Hence the next phrase (The first two go hand in hand)
    "We run everything flat"
    Running zero EQ does not mean "running flat". Made me laugh out loud! That just means you have no EQ and you are using the "set it and forget it" mentality. Unless you have the proper microphone and proper software/hardware, you cannot run anything flat. The room has acoustics which will automatically emphasize certain frequencies. Improper EQ'ing is why you think that you do not need subs. The idea is to EQ the room flat. If you just want to show up, plug in and play, that's great.
    "That's too deep" ROTFLMMFAO Cerwin Vega has always had bass. CV was for years the benchmark until it was sold to Gibson and now CV is essentially bankrupt. Trying to compare a folded design vs a front loaded cabinet is like trying to compare the size of an orange to the size of a grapefruit. Yes, they both have circumference, but 100% completely different animals. The bass on those thing will come in at about 25' if the phasing is correct. But because the room was not checked acoustically, proper EQ used, phasing becomes an issue.
    I needed a good laugh.
