  • His greatest in stature, were the P2 and W1 steam locomotives also Gresley’s greatest gambles?
    Watch these ‪@HornbyModelRailways‬ OO Gauge Giants synced with archive sounds to give them a full head of steam at full regulator.
    The P2, 2001 “ Cock O’ The North ” has recently been weathered for a customer and with its 2-8-2 “ Mikado “ wheel arrangement is possibly the biggest 00 gauge locomotive to pass through the studio so far.
    This video provides a glimpse of the future as brand new build P2 no. 2007 “ Prince of Wales “ is well underway at Darlington by the ‪@thea1steamlocomotivetrust889‬
    I can’t wait to see and hear this magnificent loco in action, it’s due to steam in 2025.
    The P2 makes a pleasing comparison with the W1 10000 “Hush Hush” which has also received weathering and been pressed into service alongside the home fleet. Whilst in the Neville Grove weathering studio the opportunity was taken for the loco to pay a quick visit to the wheel drop where modifications were made to the two trailing axles beneath the cab. This simple modification allows the wheels to sit on the rails and rotate when running and thus has rectified the only fault I could find with this sublime offering from Hornby. Big thanks to Jack of ‪@SouthernRailwayModelling‬ for the tips on how to do this. He is a master craftsman of building kits and modifying RTR models. Do check out his CZcams channel to see his work.
    Archive sound recorded by Peter Handford is featured courtesy of Old Thundridge Records.
    Thanks also to ‪@MrTBrearley‬ for the use of his superb recordings of 60007 working on the Settle & Carlisle Railway recently.

    Love these big Gresleys. I'm still working on my rebuilt W1 Hush Hush in Garter blue. I've achieved the missing wow factor, which Hornby failed to achieve, so now I need to subtly weather it.
    I gave Hornby a lecture for my livery expectations for their new P2 on Saturday at The Great Electric Train Show
    e.g. the brass bits need to be brass and the copper pipes copper. The window surrounds brass and wood as appropriate. The wheel tyres to be fully steel, not filled with coloured plastic wheel spoke inserts. Bachmann achieved all this on their new V2, I told them, so that's what I now expect. A technical guy seemed to take notice but Simon Kohler wasn't really listening, just giving me a load of spiel about the big plan 🤷

    • @NEVILLEGROVE
      @NEVILLEGROVE  Před rokem

      I’m afraid to say that I reckon the P2 will be way too far down the line to change structural things like the wheel material. Finishes can be tinkered with much easier sure, but can also easily be rectified by the modeller with only basic skills.

    • @andrewdking
      @andrewdking Před rokem

      @@NEVILLEGROVE you say that, but many of my club members don't have these basic skills or have dodgy eyesight and/or shaky hands. Some, all the above. They probably never made loads of Airfix kits and Kiel Kraft balsa wood kits as I did as a kid

    Another off topic comment. As you have sound recordings, does it include a Mirrlees diesel engine ?
    Accurascale's new Class 31 sound files can't reproduce said engine's sounds because no working engine exists. You could therefore be useful to them ?
