The reason why Theroux is so successful interviewing people who otherwise would never gave an interview to a reporter is because he approaches them in a respectful way and treats them equally, unlike other reporters, who are rather haughty and self-opinionated.

There's a lot to be considered here. Also the shorter tattooed guy is AB so therefore he can only be one of several high up people. Who is he, has he made it another ten, who are his lieutenants. The quiet guy with the hair and beard on the right also intrigues me and a few people in the back.

A lesson - if you are relaxed, treat people with dignity, and show a genuine interest in their lives, you can befriend anyone. It's a social skill few have. A very difficult thing to do - most people would go into the same conversation very anxious and displaying defensive body language, which would in turn make the prisoners anxious/defensive.
My father was actually a bit like Louis. He could talk to anyone, and make anyone like him. Because he genuinely didn't think a lawyer or a doctor was any better than a prisoner or an ex con. He saw everyone the same. Some people have more luck than others. Some people make more mistakes than others. But we're all the same, and there are very few evil people in the world. And if you treat everyone equally, people respond to that. And it works both ways - high status, wealthy people don't want to be treated differently either. Bill Gates and Elon Musk would much prefer you talk to them like a normal person, than treat them with reverence

I have to disagree with you. Do a doctor and a convicted violent criminal deserve the same treatment and both should be respected? I don't think so. People make mistakes, yes, but that doesn't make them nice, especially the people in the video, one guy has nazi tattoos on his chest, I don't think it's a good idea to show a genuine interest in his life whatsoever. Being nice and respectful doesn't work in all areas of life, unfortunately.
He's a tourist with a guard. If he was going to prison, for real, he'd get beat up in no time. Watch Ozz, is a very realistic depiction of prison life.

Possibly nothing nice was said to them ever. Dragged up and neglected by inadequate parent, most will have gone through the care system, group homes, youth authority and now prison.
Sam Harris makes some good arguments for why free will is somewhat of an illusion. A lot of it comes down to genetics and a lot of blind luck. Variables you couldn’t even possibly think of. There was a study done that showed how prison inmates in the US were 25% more likely to have suffered major head trauma compared to the general population. Head trauma particularly those diagnosed with CTE is associated with less impulse control and greater propensity for violence. Exposure to lead dropped in the 1990’s with the move to unleaded gasoline and there is suspicion this lead exposure was connected to less impulse control because crime rates suddenly dropped. People like to think everyone is in control of how their lives turn out but if your dad had mental illness and was violent and/or your mom drank or did drugs during pregnancy and/or you grow up in a violent poverty stricken environment with few opportunities its almost like a forgone conclusion in the US that you will end up in prison. Parents like to think they have a lot of control over how their kids turn out but it turns out kids peer groups they hang out with have a far greater impact on how they turn out. Beautiful words and kisses sadly don’t have as much of an impact as we’d like to think.

I've had good times with good people and I'm still only 35. That kid, if he gets even half of that 38 years will have sat in a prison yard with skinheads, twice a week for 19-38 years. What a life.
