  • Tunskeen Bothy is one of many bothys (or bothies) dotted around Scotland for those walkers seeking shelter. Galloway Forest Park sits in the south western area of Scotland and is home to around six bothys.
    The forest park is also one of the few "Dark Sky Parks" which can be completely free of light pollution making it great for night time photography, weather depending.

      I couldn't have made anything in the darkness of the wee hours 😂
      I'll definitely be taking some of my favourite coffee for the next time (when restrictions allow) to enjoy in the morning.

      Hey SWW, it's a good wee bothy and a good base for the hills in the area. I've not been back for a while but might get back this year sometime.
      There's still some exploring to be done in them hills for me.

      It was my first bothy camp and one I really enjoyed. I've looked at doing a route from the Merrick to it, stay the night and head back around the Merrick the following day... obviously after this lockdown. How long is your route from Loch Doon?

      Thanks Almonte, it was fairly clean, weatherproof and comfortable. I do think the bothies around Dumfries and Galloway get used quite a bit by groups of 'youths' for drinking but we had a great night.

      @AScotsmanOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      Hi K G, Thanks for watching and apologies for not replying sooner. I was lucky to have the place to myself and on my first trip out to one too.
      I feared that there would be someone there (kilted or otherwise) in person but also had a bit of the 'heebs' when it initially became dark. Although, I would have fought anyone wanting to try and take one of my beers, real or not 😂
      Glad you liked it and I'm hoping to get out to more bothy's over the coming months but it can be rather a taboo subject with the pandemic so we'll see how that goes.
      Again, glad you liked it and thanks for watching.

      There's a few in and around Dumfries and Galloway but the majority are in the highlands. I was planning to find and try a few of the more remote ones but Covid happened 🤷🏻‍♂️ 😂

    Loved this video. Superb way of shooting it and loved how you had your best buddy along for the adventure. I've got a Jack Russell and they are just balls of energy. Whats his name. Being in the bothy and eating your porridge is the height of Scottish heaven. Did u take your tent with you just in case. It was looking close to darkness when you arrived. Honestly man this was a real warming video and looking forward to the next video. Keep it up :) :)

    • @esperoutdoors9421
      @esperoutdoors9421 Před 5 lety +1

      i was camping in the www.ballochodee.com/ site, so luxury compared to the bothy. its a good place to use as a base. Never stayed in a proper bothy, def prefer the tent. But its a good backup option if you need it. If you havnt put your tent up already and you have just come off the hills etc. i can see why people use them when they are knackered.

    • @AScotsmanOutdoors
      @AScotsmanOutdoors  Před 5 lety

      @@esperoutdoors9421 That does look luxury.
      I was the same view that I preferred my tent but honestly, it was a great experience staying in a proper bricks and mortar house with wood burner and the wee man. Its opened my eyes to the possibility of exploring the hills around that area and using the bothy as a base.
      I do still love my tent and the freedom carrying it gives.

    • @AScotsmanOutdoors
      @AScotsmanOutdoors  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi, no they don't usually have a toilet in them. It's usually a case of a weather proof building, possibly a wood stove and very rarely some form of power.

      @@AScotsmanOutdoors so what's one supposed to do for bathroom facilities?

    • @AScotsmanOutdoors
      @AScotsmanOutdoors  Před 2 lety +2

      Well, for a number 1 I'd argue that it's common practice to find a spot away from water ways and do your business as you please and for number 2's it's a case of digging a 'cats hole' (a small pit around 6 inches wide and the same deep), do your business and fill in the mud on top when finished. That's pretty much it.
