  • A "freedom of information" report reveals that a percentage of V/Line trains breaking down is from nothing more than running out of fuel. The reason? The driver does not have access to the fuel gauge. As reported by Channel 7 6pm evening news 25 June 2012

Running out of fuel isn't a 'breakdown'. It's just inconvenient. A 'breakddown' is when something fails, usually an engine or transmission part, causing total inability of the unit to operate.
"Gauges are on the fuel tank, out of sight of the driver". Shows photo of the genset isolating tap. Yup. Perfect.

It kind of is a breakdown, and it's perfectly safe having the gauges out of sight of the driver, definitely.

So, when the fuel runs low, the driver just pulls into the next servo? Somehow I doubt that gauges were really the issue.

Totally agree. I would "like" to think trains depart a depot with a required and measured compliment of fuel for the duties ahead. Maybe it's like cars and they never ever get the manufacturer's fuel consumption figures :)

@@mbwyatt1978 I suspect that what was really happening is that drivers were just assuming that the tanks got filled, and didn't check the gauges on the tanks as they were supposed to. Since there were no gauges in the cabs, they'd set off with insufficient fuel. So fitting gauges to the cabs is just a sop to lazy drivers.

The Valocity DMUs that make up most of the fleet could keep running easily even with one car isolated (shut down). I bet they'd still be faster than a locomotive hauled train.

@@Comeng_ V/Los like most modern trains are so sterile & they don't even have the performance advantage over EMUs & there runs are made even slower by the railway track they run on, it's 3rd World shit. They are however considerably faster than the loco hauled trains. But I thought the same way when the relitavely quiet (compared to easy diesels locos) & sealed window, sound insulated cars took over the services. No more window open listening to noisy diesels, steam or even the hum of E class traction motors & dynamic/regen braking. + with Ns (& even before Ns with typically 3 car N cars or 4 Z/S cars & many stations dropped, the timetable was speeded up under The New Deal. With RFR, it was speeded up much more. But indeed V/Los are a bore, poorly fitted out & being DMU, nothing to write home about. Much slower than modern EMU. Adelaide 4,000 class 0-110 Km/H in 44 seconds in tests. V/Lo would be at least double that, though still much faster than an N & 4 cars (the 5 cars with Ns, today accelerate considerably slower).

Hmmm, yes, because just like a steam train of the past collecting coal and water, a diesel electric can just stop off and top up its fuel at one of the many gigantic fuel tanks readily available at every station on regional lines

In the short term at least they could have something in the drivers cab saying when the train was last refueled and when it requires refueling. this is just very simple maintenance. in the long term they need to electrify the main lines out of Melbourne, like in Sydney. but if they cant even get basic maintenance right, what hope is there.

In the days when we had a real railway, the Victorian Railways, believe me there was bloody near a royal commission if a mainline locomotive ran out of fuel. A bit different to this flyblown cloud that run Vline that pretend to run the system called Vline now.

It's hard to check because there is one but it's on the outside on the side next to the fuel tank beneath the floor of the train. The government before this current Baillieu government were only interested in cutting down as much costs as possible without a ...high risk to safety
I do suggest to the seven news team that worked on this report is not use the word 'breakdown' because the train did not cease moving because of a malfunction, it is simply because it 'ran out of fuel' use these words.

Double decker trains would be a good idea, but they would have to deal with any low bridges. Electrification is also a good idea, the are just too lazy to bother.

It doesn't work like that. It works the same way the airlines do for economy & fueling infrastructure purposes. Also do you fill your car up every trip? No you don't. The problem here was a computation issue and lack of low fuel light.
