“I use this ... it’s just a polished spike. Stick it in there and give it a bit of love.” Love the face that went along with this statement.
Al is the champion.
Hi, from Orlando, Florida, U.S.A.! Great presentation. I learned the Metric system when I was a child in the 60's, and they said that was the system to which we were going - 60 years later I'm still waiting. I use both systems, doing machine work as a hobby. Best wishes to you, and I hope that you stay healthy!
The same day this video is uploaded, I find out my power steering line is rooted lol
9:25 those fittings are the same ones we used to build hoses in the miltary as a hydraulics technician. The real fun ones are the sizes 24. So same procedure just ALOT bigger lol.
2 years later and saved my day today haha
I do probably 50 or 60 power steering hoses per year in Bunbury WA. I am a mobile hose owner and depending on the brand of hose , you can do almost OEM quality work, or sometimes I use stainless/ Teflon if the owner wants bling.
I do the same here in Ballarat mate. Loads of custom mustang ones. I do a lot in steel pipe work too. I get a real kick out of doing a good OEM looking job.
I agree with you guys. A/N looks dinky. OEM looks much better.
Swapping OE to new crate motor on my old C10 right now and I have to adapt OE box to new pump with metric fittings. I love to see the old "I don't have it, so I'm going to make it" mentality! Glad to see Aussies still hot rodding too!
40 thou if you're ancient! Hilarious.
Yeah, that comment cracked me up also. My type of humour. 😂
He probably listens too triple j also !
If you put tape over where you are cutting with the cut of wheel, it makes clean up much easier. Great how to video. Thanks for sharing.
Also quick tip when making hydraulic hoses, or any hoses for that matter, always clock/orient your fitting and route your hose to go with the natural flow of the hose, meaning bulk hoses comes on a spools and tend to always have a bend or curve in it. Keep that in mine when routing your hose, don’t fight it, use it to your advantage! Specially true if you go above 1/2” hoses and more so if it’s double braided.
Thanks Al! Ive got a $400 dozer hose on my valiant that needs replacing, that’ll do the job nicely 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Thanks for the great tutorial! Nice to have a bit of Oz in my Stateside Nova!!!
I like to put a piece of tape on the hose after screwing it into the nut(at the point where the hose comes out of the nut), as one could hear it gets quite tight as you thread it together. The tape will show you if the hose pushed out which can happen. We used fittings like these on the oil rigs back in the day.
Thanks Alan. Your timing is impeccable. I'm in the middle of a conversion and while not yet up to the power steering, I will be well armed with the info from this great video. Cheers.
These videos are the reason that I watched Al in MCM and now The Skid Factory all these years. Great lessons on making your own stuff. I noticed that these videos don't get many views as the other videos. That's unfortunate.
Loving your tech articles and I hope we see more of the HJ. That LS seems to fit nicely in the bay.
great vid as usual lads, id really like to see a vid on engine loom earthing and how it can effect missfires, sensor signal etc etc, also coil dwell explained and how it effects spark, basically an expert take on chasing missfires, cheers
Finlay
these are the best! thank you guys and please keep up the quick techs!!
Love these vids Al. Would have never thought about making my own power steering hoses. Will be keeping this in mind for sure :)
Great tip, nice looking car, thanks guys for the Saturday video, great surprise for the day 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
can you do a step by step on doing custom engine mount? like how to line up the engine and gearbox? is there any difference when making custom mounts between fwd and rwd engine?
I would also love this.
I really appreciate these Quick Tech series vids, guys!
Topic suggestion: the differences and various applications between oil-only CHRA turbos and oil-and-coolant CHRA ones.
Oil only for a engine thats built to make big power.water cooling if it's going to a million kilometres... Turbos have come along way from the 90s! unless you buy a manufacturer specific turbo it won't have water cooling....
@@thecraftiekiwi4919 I'm looking at either a G25-660 Garrett (oil-and-water CHRA) or perhaps a Gen 2 5558 PTE (oil-only CHRA). I'll be tuning for 500whp.
I currently have a GT2871 now (oil-and-water, 390whp) on my Mazdaspeed 3. My application is for competitive tracking and auto-x, so heat rejection over an extended period of time is important and has me shying away from oil-only.
Love watching your vids it's like my old man showing what to do on my motor
Another great video, would love to see one about engine machining
Great video Al, this is so much nicer than what we used to be forced into 20 years back doing swaps, brazing two different high pressure lines together on the hard line with an oversize piece of hard line over the two was the way, seems rather rogue now but it worked I guess. Used to cost about £150 for a custom pipe back in the 90's in the Uk, people were spending that for the bloody engine to swap in haha.
Thanks for the tips Al!
That was bloody brilliant lads killer work!!
Great video as always Al
Great video! Al's a natural teacher. Keep up the great work! How about a video on custom engine mounts or custom throttle cable brackets? Cheers from America! 🍻
Excellent content!
Would love to see a DIY aircon setup where as you have to either replumb and use a different condensor.
This would be great as I have to fit AC to my VW van this autumn.
@@idrisddraig2 If it's a Kombi just wind the windows down and listen to the glorious sound of the Dak Dak! If its a T3 or later just buy the original equipment and fit it.
@@terryjackson4538 It's a T5 , Original equipment will be 2K€ +, I will end up using scrapyard parts
Hell yea AN fitting are best thing made for mods. Love ya vids keep them coming 😁👊
Thanks for all the detail
The combination of tech series and progress series you guys provide works where a lot of channels try to do this, you succeed. Good on ya Mate! Cheers! Zip~
I'm keeping this in my back pocket. Thanks Al and Woody!
Great video Al! Really helped me out on my ls swapped e39
Love your work.
Thanks for the tips Guys 👍
Love you guys, keep making vids
thanks Al great tip as usual keep the excellent content coming. Thanks for the camera work Woody
Love the Quick Tech stuff fellas! Would love to hear your opinion on catch cans, would be nice to see you make one of you need one for a project!
Great topic, thank you.
Your best video yet! Something about it just caught my eye 😉
Great information as always. What about the use of bulk heads to go threw firewalls when remote mounting electric power steering pumps
Awesome content
Thanks your a master of your craft.👍🤙
I just got a 4min ad. Commenting to pass some time. No skipping, support the boiis
Thanks lad. Quietly confident on making my own for the supra now 👍 Just need to try and get the parts without getting shafted by customs 😭
Ialready knew this from my other job where we use steel fittings but I aways enjoy the content!
Good stuff!
love your videos Allen very useful and educational I'm also from queensland about 60km away from you
I just made one for my HZ Tonner with a 5.3. Took me a while to work out the left-hand thread bit, wish I'd seen this first.
A tip for cutting hydraulic hose, even big heavy "six wire" hose, when you dont have the correct cutting equipment, is to lay it over a log and give it a big hearty swing and chop with an axe. It will go straight through it very cleanly.
An axe!! How do you get internet in the woods..haha. So creative!
I reeeeeeeeaaaaaally want to see this whole build.
thanks again al
Cheers Al 👍
Professor Al Cheers mate.
Well done skid , try the oxy acetylene hoses and fittings much the same but a real pain to fit up , great video 👌🏼👊
Fantastic
Welding the thin pipe to an AN fitting with ER70S filler can make them brittle and prone to failure. Especially in due to heat and vibration fatiguing them. I usually like to use silicon bronze and TIG them together without melting the base metal. You'll notice a lot of engine oil pickups are constructed this way for the same reason.
Hence why he said he has them silver soldered at his friends radiator shop ;-)
@@southjerseysound7340 Yup Shane down at Old Cock's takes care of it.
So sick. Aussies just flexing their knowledge. Yeah lads!
Awesome thanks 👍
A kinga and a chooka in the shed. Nice.
You guys are rad...🍻😎👌...
If you ask they guys doing the hoses will make it look nice especially Pirtek
Ancient if its in thou eh? Ba ha ha just cracked up. Yea I fit in the category. Great vid guys well done.
Quick tech on hand and power tools
would love to see a vid on custom sump building/modifying and oil pick up to suit. especially on an RB. cheers
Matty Greig I think Al and Benny did that for the MCM boys on their RB26 Fairlady build. Might be able to take a gander there
Thank you for this - I'm ordering some from Aus as there are no UK suppliers. I'm not even doing this for a conversion, just to replace the factory lines that have perished and follow a truly ridiculous path around the engine bay. About 4 metres of pipe to travel 1.5 metres from pump to rack. No NOS available anywhere and it's only a 2006 car.
You're a very interesting old man Al 🍻
Yeah! How does it feel to be old Al?
I work for Pirtek... and cause I have a passion for cars ... if it's for a car I ask What make and their intentions if it's just to make it work or does it need to be pretty as I can make it
Good on ya mate ! You sir would be one of the few good ones out there. Most hose replacement companies I've seen only specialise in quick and fit for purpose not show car standard, and when you do find someone who can make it shine it has the shiny price tag to match. If it is cool with @The Skid Factory could you pass your contact details around (for when we require a quick roadside fix) ?
I had my steering rack changed a year or two ago on my 97 Camry. They didn't tighten the fitting on the steering rack from the steering wheel. I took it back and said it has a lot of play in it. The steering feels quite light, the steering wheel is off centre and personally I think the rack needs a little more play taken out of it. I like a steering wheel that you can take your hands off and it drives straight down the road with a slight tendency to wander according to road surface.
Please, custom air-con hose vid!
In this video Al shows you how he deals with his hose, racks and how he gets them to work.
Would possible to go more in depth in terms of fittings, sizes and common uses.
I'm also a mechanic but I don't actually know what you mean when you say we are using this dash 100 series line for application X. It would be nice to see and have explain the differences in lines, sizes and being able to have a rough idea on what lines are needed for certain applications
Check out the Bedford van episode he talked about. He goes over all that stuff, it's really informative!
With AN fittings larger numbers are bigger fittings. So -8 would be bigger than -6. And they get sized based on how much flow is needed and what kind of pressure it needs. Smaller hoses can withstand higher pressures without extra reinforcement.
And the 100 series is the type of the hose. It varies some by brand, but the different series will have different pressure ratings and different fluids they’ll handle.
CarQuest can do up hoses for people in Canada, not too expensive, around $100 depending on the hose and it'll look pretty much OEM. Although they didnt have the right fittings to do a custom clutch hose for me the last time, but brake line did the trick until I got my hands on the right materials.
I can watch Al talk forever. Legend
This is awesome! Can you guys list the fittings that you use? I started a list on my second laptop when you started giving out the sizes! :)
Mig welding leak free is deff fun!
As a hydraulics worker who remakes P/S hoses but the part you'll miss is the internal resister on the high pressure side preventing damage to pumps and boxes due to fluid pulses. with all respect Yoda at 11:14 you shouldn't use the hose to turn the mandrel/hose tail on.
Funny part is AN6 is a 9/16" JIC to hydraulics worker.
Interesting, I normally go to the local hydraulic hose shop that makes custom hoses and will do it using the old fittings then will do it the cheep way with functional hose or the fancy with decent priced parts, did a nice job on my ATTESA pump hose for my S12.... but good to know which hose and parts to look for when that isn't a option, thanks
great job ,, time for a lemon squash
Didnt know you guys got your own channel, was so sad when i stopped seeing your vids on mcmv2. Looks like I have months of vids to catch up on!
Are the adapters from speed flow as well. Good tutorial.
Could you make a video about ac systems
How about a little tech on gauges when converting? (more specifically, how about some gauges that work by plugging into the OBD II port?)
clocking the fittings - on shorter runs, it helps to mark where you want the fitting oriented when finished. There are a bunch of ways of doing it, but it is really annoying to be 180 degrees off and unable to connect the points.
could of used this video two weeks ago!! make it look so easy haha
Buy a thread pitch gauge and vernier callipers. Measure pitch and inner diameter
i might be a bit late on this, but am interested how and when u guys choose flex lines over fixed ones for rear brakes. when, why & how all that stuff (when u guys got the time, or ran out of topics). cheers!
i build those hoses often in the truck shop i work at, only difference is our fittings arent pretty aluminium ones
Could you show us how to make a bench tuning harness and or one for running hptuners off a 12v power source inside the car for scanning , logging.
Turbo yoda !!! Please do a techtalk about correct turbo sizing for your application 😜👍🇦🇺
Woot 👌👌👌
I love watching this man be uncomfortable on camera but dropping more knowledge than a physics professor.... The silence when he stops talking is deafening!
A quick tech on brake upgrades would be nice
Thank you to all that did not give our teacher any reason to correct you! we all gained here! ty sir.
I have that engine in my VY SS Commodore & I have already heat wrapped the driver's side header (Genie headers) to protect the power steering rack & starter motor as well as other stuff like the heater valve & battery from getting cooked (the drivers side header tended to warp the heater valve) but I would like to heat wrap the passenger side header next.
The high pressure power steering pipe comes into close contact (1 inch) with the exhaust header which tends to make the power steering hard to steer.
I tend to notice that the high pressure pipe also weeps a little bit of fluid & the pump is brand new,I think that the rear of the pump & the power steering pipe gets too hot so I'm going to insulate the exhaust header from the power steering pump.
I noticed that the same engine in the Chevrolet Camaro has its high pressure hose run down the front of the engine to the power steering rack which is mounted in front of the engine so it's routed away from the exhaust manifold, the Camaro uses a different pump as well !
