- Sorry for the delay in posting I was at King of the Hammers and when I get back from that week I end up sick as a dog ALWAYS so I had to take a few days to recover.
This week we talk about shop safety, ball vs king pin axles, what trail communication do I use when wheeling...and the most asked Where is it Now....the Suburban Gorilla

What was your favorite build with Jessi?
As someone who grew up during the time where they were on tv together, I second this question.
Same here.
There can be explosive vapours in a shop but to say cordless tools can be a hazard because of a spark doesn’t make much sense when you use a welder and grinders in your shop.
Or even top 3 favorite builds with Jessi. Would be pretty cool to hear as I also grew up watching them on TV together.
Trick question. Every build with Jessi was the best build.
The memory of the suburban gorilla still lives man, I still remember tuning in on the power block through that whole build back in the day. Still epic 👍🏻.
But there is only 6 episodes. It doesn't get finished
Ian is a great guy, he emphasized how much he's glad no one got hurt in regards to The Suburban Gorilla because it could've been fixed up if the buyer chose to go that route, im glad he has that mindset that vehicles can always be fixed or replaced and luckily thats how i think too
Modern electric tools are running brushless motors. Shouldn't have near the risk if any at all. But I agree 100% I like using and love the sound of air tools
My shop teacher had the same opinion on electric vs air tools. Personally for me it's whatever is going to do the job best. Besides I worry much more about the welding and grinding sparks. A couple of weeks ago I started a broom on fire while welding.
Well, at least you didn't catch the seat and hat on fire.
Dang! That suburban was one of the coolest trucks I ever saw. I loved watching that build. Need a Jessi memory like others have said
Really great video & the air versus electric tools safety question turned on the light bulb in my 61 year old brain, I can't believe I never thought about the safety third part of your answer. Thank you for sharing your knowledge & experience.
Hey. Even though the suburban gorilla died. Your friend made the right decision to head for the trees upon whatever mechanical failure happened. Kudos to him!
Big sad about the gorilla! I like others have wondered what happened to it so thanks for telling us all. Happy no one got hurt sounds like you built one hell of a truck for 6 people to crash in it and walk away without a scratch. Rip suburban gorilla!
I had downloaded all of the Extreme 4x4 episodes so that I could watch them while deployed. I watched the Suburban Gorilla series far more than any others. That's a shame it got smashed and parted.
Milwaukee has a dust and spark proof cover for their impacts and the batteries now to help prevent explosions
aw man that makes me kinda wanna cry. not only is the suburban gorilla project one of my earliest memories of you Ian but also has been and will continue to be the single largest inspiration for me. i have always been a fan of suburban's as my father was a suburban fan so when you started that project on xtreme i was on the edge of my seat the whole time. imma hafto go pour one out for the suburban gorilla.
Also i am proud to say i would get that shop safety question correct. as a commercial/industrial hvac technician i often work with pneumatic controls for ventilation and hvac equipment, which is often used for the inherent explosive environment rating.
If i may ask, do you ever take on apprentices that want to learn from you?
Thank you Ian, as always a gentleman and a scholar
I like the history involved here. Also great tip in an earlier video about setting up your tie rod while the alignment bar is in the axle. Thanks!
I literally was just watching the Suburban Gorilla build video before I clicked on this one 🤘😁
Awesome Karma out to you Ian
Hello Ian, first I want to thank you. I started watching you from way back when. I'm not going to give a date because it's just a reminder of how old we are. Lol I am a few years younger then you from what I gather. But to the point you are the reason I decided to take my 92 Jeep xj that I've owned for 17 years and make it truly mine. My goal was to transform it to an aggressive overlander. That was almost 4 years ago now. It took me a long while to gather some of the necessary tools, welder, plasma and etc. I have always worked on my own stuff but not to the level of extreme mechanic and fab work that you have motivated me to do. It took me a while to collect the tools that I did not have. I am just a blue collar Laborer. Well actually I'm below blue collar. Lol probably more like a dark sh!% brown labor. Lol I'm a stone mason labor. I work for someone so I don't make a lot. Any how, I watched and watched every show that you had made among other great CZcams fabricators/mechanics . It's been about 2 years of actual hands on work. I'm sure you don't read every comment because you are a very busy guy. But one day I would have liked to sit down and tell you about my progress, its not much but I'm excited about it. When I feel discouraged I just find one of my favorite shows of yours and watch it. You should be proud of what you have done. You have encouraged many others like myself. What I would have gave to work with you under apprenticeship. To personally watch you work and the ability to ask questions and get guidance. It's to bad I waited so late in life to pursue this awesome hobby. But I wouldn't trade my life with my son for anything. It's just him and I so time is a luxury for me.
I just don't have the time and other means to just drop everything and go to school. But at least you give people like me a foundation of education to build on and enjoy this hobby even if it's in our driveway or in our redneck carport garage. Hey it works brother. Anyway thank you for your hard work and the educating you share with so many.
Hey Ian, last year at "Hammers" was the worse for dust! I was sick for two weeks, did not stop coughing!!! That "Gorilla" build typified my interest in doing fab work! I watched your show from "Day One"! I've learned a lot from you doing your stuff. Here's my question, "how important is weigh & balance when you are planning to build a rig"? Thanks for all your help, hope to meet up with you at EJS!
Always one of my favorite builds!
_FMG_
Loved the finger guns and sound effects
Wow, Sorry to hear about the suburban Gorilla. I watched every episode of extreme 4X4. that was one of my favorite builds. I had a similar story. I was the one that borrowed the vehicle and totaled it. To make the situation right, I sold my first custom I built to pay for my friends car. We are still friends today. The first thing my friend said was " are you ok?" me "yes" Him "Dumba$$" LOL, nothing replaces good friends and family.
Truth.....people over projects
Well that was a kick to the junk about the beast. I loved watching that build. Keep rocking.
I have my 79 bronco set up with gmrs, cb , cell phone, vhf and uhf ham radio because I wheel alone 90% I also carry a satellite emergency locator so I can get help when seriously in need.
When I seen the suburban gorilla build , I wanted one , thought that thing was Awesome. Yeah it's kinda sad about what happened but sounds like even though it got parted out everything still got used .
I always wondered what happened to the suburban gorilla project. Thanks for the update Ian
hmm, never thought of it like that. I use battery tools, so that's a bit of enlightenment
Re: rebuildable ball joints-EMF is another option. Rebuildable inside the axle. Small Canadian company. Seems like a well thought out product.
The Dynatrac are rebuilt in the axle
Gotcha, so it is apples to apples so to speak.@@BigTireGarage What lead you to pick the dynatrac?
I want you to revisit the Bucking Bronco project. That was such a sweet build.
Good breakdown of 1-ton front axles and why to use one over another.
OOO I like this idea
pretty much all current battery powered tools are brushless these days, so the spark possibility is pretty much eliminated. Though to be fair I never really considered it either way.
I payed a small fortune for my 79 ford king pin (snow fighter) 60. But it went under my 68 F250 high boy Fumins. It took me about 6 months to find one.
So Ian had an "I went the internet and I found this" moment on the Gorilla.
When I hear your intro music, I think of the music for the Mark and Brian TV show. Don't know why.
Issue with the 9 inch is that it is hard to find them in junk yards. 14 bolts are still easy to find and cheap. You can still find CAD dodge 60's for the knuckles and C's for cheap, along with hubs off of a dana 50 TTB. You can still build a relatively cheap built front 14 bolt for about the same price for a built 60. Only custom parts are the 30 spline inner shafts. I have converted rear axles into front axles using the CAD 60 outers and TTB hubs for less than a complete Ford 60 goes for in my area.
I would never build a junkyard 9" I always say that if you want to build a 9" build it from all new parts
@@BigTireGarage that is the best option. One day I will be able to afford nice nine inch parts. Working part time and going to school does not leave much room in the budget for any good aftermarket parts lol.
great to hear about your vehicles history
Ian what would be your build recipe for a dana 44? I went with a 78 Ford HP dana 44, never intended to run 40s, yet here we are... Nate did a great dana 44 build recipe video a few years ago and upon his recommendation I plan to run the Jantz dana 50 kit and a beefy truss. Thanks for your insight Ian
05+ super duty 10” ring gear and can up grade to 40 spline axle shafts.
Where I'm from that is what we call a good story.
Dude, you are very talented and your knowledge is amazing, sorry about the glasses on and off comment
No worries!
The real question is which axle can we make the strongest for the cheapest? How about revisiting your Dakota shop truck as an every man's build? Like, no Reid racing Knuckles but a 1999 Dodge 2500 Dana 60 front.
I'm not sure if its been suggested or not...but beings that you've only got so many old builds for your "where are they now" portion of these videos, why not do a "readers ride" portion, like the 4wheeler magazine used to do back in the day, and how Stacey Davis does (or did??). i think it would be cool to share what your viewers are working on and stuff like that...maybe set up a separate email for that??
Just a thought, love your content, hopefully get a chance to wheel with you one day
Love this idea!!!!
@@BigTireGarage just realized my fat thumbs typo’d the legends last name…how embarrassing lol.
What is your NEXT fab tool going to be? You've got a CNC plasma, various benders and the like... What do you still want to have in your shop?
Balljoint axles are a complete non-issue now with balljoint deletes kits.
Two items/questions. Safety tip. Be mindful of remote starters around lead acid battery's. Let's hear your opinion of full hydro steering. I see a number of CZcamsr's build full hydro steering and still intend to use on the road. A few of them state that they don't see laws that prevent it. But are there laws stating that you must have a mechanical connection from steering gear to knuckle. Therefor illuminating the possibility of full hydro steering on public roads. D.O.T./Federal laws-vs-state laws. Enjoying the question and answers.
I have both....I have full hydro on street legal rigs all the time....yes there are DOT laws in some states, but you realize that a lot of public transit buses use full hydro steering (the ones that bend in the middle) the best part about the US....find a state/county that lets you build what you want
I would love to see you build another Square With the coils and such from the Ram Like you did the Suburban gorilla. Wonder if it would be cheaper then doing links and coilovers?
I’ve got a question for you… what do you look like without your hair spiked? 😂
Chris Farley
Air tools are just common because air motors can be cheap and small.
I would like to see how to build a modern rear stear axle or how to do a 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive conversion on a f250
What is the general rule for minimum up-travel on a off road only trail crawler, (with good bumps and shocks?) When trying to keep lift and CG low as possible. Forums are all over the place when it comes to the center of gravity/clearance debate.
Ian - I am planning out a trailer build. I have seen both you and Nate (dirt lifestyles) mount off-road tires on trailers and continue with your build. As I’m doing more research I have read that putting standard tires on a trailer can be dangerous (blowouts and such) as they aren’t designed for the weight. When is it ok to do off-road tires and when do you need to purchase trailer specific tires????
Its all about the load rating...car trailers or others that carry heavy weights need actual trailer tires.
I know this is an older video, but do you feel that the new brushless tools are a safer tool in the shop environment?
OMG pirate 4x4 !!!
I would love to see that Volkswagen thing (safari) that was my life, bugs and things in off road. I started off with the 57 bug and a 67 bug. Of course they both got gear boxes at that time. I eventually got into IFS long travel. I would love to see an electric version of a jeg. (4x4) But I would like to see the electric as the transmission for a diesel or a gas motor. With the ability to use the batteries for transportation or not but not using technology that is encrypted a vehicle made literally for or on off-road. I know exactly what you meant about that Canadian 2 1/2 times at least when you order something from the states back then.
It’s sucks to see a vehicle that had so much put into it, just get parted out. Don’t know why people do that.
What in your opinion makes KOH so good, what can other event organizers learn from it and what would you do to improve it?
Also unit bearing much more serviceable vs bearing and races
Junkyard or fb 9 for 100 Dana 60 or Dana 50 outers 800> eBay drag drop out
Torq Motorsports offered a high pinion version of their Super 14 bolt at one point. I'm not sure if they're still around, though.
I don't think they still offer that
Dam ian. That is a sad way to end the video, but I like to look at it as it made other creations possible.
As for a question. If you were building and early toyota ifs rig on a budget, would you solid axle swap it on leafs or 3 link? Why would you choose either.
What vehicle would you pick to build as someone less than 20yo with a tight budget and why?
What happened to the Dakota shop truck build?
What's your opinion on harbor freight tools like Pittsburgh and central pneumatic etc.
Would you rather... build a Sami like Amber and go on her Zukicon on the Rubicon Trail or build a Jeepster like Adam/Tribe16 and wheel Hammers?
Why not both??
@Big Tire Garage touche! 😂🤣 and it's goals!
Worried about the sparks inside a cordless to, but don't hesitate to use a grinder or sander?
True....very true...but I am not normally grinding on a fuel line...I do use air tools to take fuel filters off frame rails
Hey Ian, where's your favorite place to wheel on the east coast
👍👍
Did you ever finish the cabover/w/ the sleeper you were going to use as a tow vehhicle?
It is heading to my friends place in Texas to get the box finished up
I didn't know if you had kept t or sent it down the road to male room for something else. Sorry to here about the Gorilla.
I want to know what happened to suburban survival
Follow up question on Dana 60 axles. You mentioned people want the king pin or the 99 and up 60's. Is there anything wrong with the 92-97 OBS F350 60's? I've heard plenty of guys swapping them for the super duty
Got a 01 isuzu rodeo. Want to build it with my son. I allready sased 1st gen 4runners. But now like the body style of the 2nd gen rodeo. Whats good about it is a fully boxed frame. The power is ehh!?! I want to do the basic leaf sprung set up. Any thoughts? Advise.
What about a super 60 kingpin 4” .5 tube reid Cs and knuckles
I have an 89 xj that I'd like to put on hopefully 40 inch tires. What's the best junkyard option with lower budget.
Ian, what is your suggestion for adding a parking brake to a mid 80s, 14bolt that has been disk brake swapped? Recently swapped it into my 2004 Toyota Tacoma and trying to keep it street legal.
Eldorado Calipers are pretty good.....you have to adjust them carefully
Just. Wanted. Tos hear about the. Suburban gorilla
Air tools only for a garage is outdated. The cordless tools of today are nearly all brushless and do not create sparks. Also, if there were enough vapors in a space to create an explosion, you'd likely be dead already from asphyxiation. Also, what about welding ...
Still prefer air tools....just personal choice
close knuckle versus open knuckle ?
Witch is better a aggressive all terrain tire or a mt tire? I had to start using my Jeep as my daily driver I’m waiting to save wear on my mt tires.
I am wanting to get a truck or jeep to go off road or rock crawling. What best advise you give me on getting started?
What do you do at KOH beyond announcing? Do you hit up Chocolate Thunder at night or do any wheeling?
Depends what my schedule looks like. The past couple years I did not drive out I flew out due to other commitments. When I did drive out in the past I usually hit up a couple trails, and then actually run some of the rock trails that are part of the race coure
Brushless modern tools don't spark... We use the in classified Ex environ.
Still an electric motor....fill it with metal shavings...and I bet they would spark
@@BigTireGarage more likely to get a spark off of the carbon steel impact bit unless you are using alu-nickle bronze hardware...
disRegardles, spent so many months trying to justify the price/practicality of a suburban gorilla to myself. Love all of your work.
How was the 24 hell and ba k challenge I just watched and it looked intense?
It was honestly SOOOO much fun!!!!
What is the best overdrive transmission to put behind a stroked 4.0 dual purpose
What happened to the LJ with 44's with 40 " tires???
The Hemi Swapped one?
I bet. You got a lot of looks in the suburban gorilla
It was an awesome rig!!!
Is. This ian himself
yep
Nice
Hey Ian, I seen a lot of LS motor swaps out there especially with a jeep TJ, my question is it really worth the time to LS swap or is it best to stay with the standard 4.0
If you have a good working 4.0 and are happy with it no......if you have a 2.5 4 cyl, or your 4.0 is backed by the 3 speed trans and want the overdrive it is often better to swap in the V8 with a new trans
@@BigTireGarage Ok, now if I went to a V8 and I’m running 430 gears with 40s right now what trans would be best
Get tools with brushless motor, they don't spark.
On the ford 99-04 front. What would cause them to go through wheel bearings every 6 months?
Wheel offset
Ian my question while watching this one is D60 or 9" pro's and con's. what would you choose and why???
If I am not worried about budget...9" all day long....if I am watching my cash...Dana 60
I have a 1977 dodge w200 4x4 with manual steering, what the best/economical way to put power steering in it.
Find same body style/engine setup on the same body style in the junkyard....strip the parts you need
Last I knew, that gorilla body is here in Jackson Michigan getting built on a new frame n such.
That would make sense...it went close to there
Hey Ian, What is your opinion on fully hydraulic steering on a street driven rig?
it isn't the best option....and thruthfully you don't "need it" for a rig that you plan to drive on the street....there are such good gears and steering available from companies like PSC that give you everything that you need.
What happened to the trailer. That. Was behind the. Suburban gorilla
The production company sold it SUPER cheap because they didn't know how to title it.....I wanted to buy it buy they wouldn't sell to employees
Wow. Thanks. For. Not minding I ask questions about the suburban gorilla I think. That. Was the. Coolest build you guys have ever done
Do you ever wheel the northeast
Yes....not often but we were there for Ultimate Adventure a few years ago and I have wheeled a few parks up there (field and forest) before
I built a Nissan pathfinder that is no longer street legal in the state of California, do I still need to register it to be able to drive it on trails? I want to run the rubicon trail and curious if I’d get in trouble without registering it.
I am unsure of the rules in California....but I believe it depends on the trail system. I see SXS's on the rubicon and I don't believe those are street legal in Cali
@@BigTireGarage well hey thank you for the reply and info! Maybe this question can come up in the next Q/A to see if anyone else has some info?!
👍🏽🇺🇸👍🏽
Not being a Dic* but how do you use a phone with a group of 10 people?
Don't understand this question
@@BigTireGarage You said you use a cell phone for communication on the trails on the east coast. I do not see how you can communicate with a group of drivers with a cell phone, at least not at the same time.
Is that a motobuilt stretch kit behind you for a brute tj build🫠
Heck fire. It'd be cool to go live.
