Just created an account! Thanks 🙏
Magdrill.. nobody thinks they need one, until they have one. So wonderful
I lucked out and found a Milwaukee one for $200 a couple years ago. I've only needed it twice, but on both jobs I'm sure glad I had it
Not sure how I’ve survived without my horizontal bandsaw. Picked up a nice used one 2 years ago. Saves tons of time and makes machined looking cuts! You won’t be disappointed
Love, love, love my basic little Jet horizontal (and vertical) bandsaw. I use it to cut tube, miter tube, cut sheet stock for brackets, and even a little woodworking. Next to my angle grinder and welder its the next most used tool I own. Really appreciate the belly height, shock travel explanation.
I was really interested to hear that you have a Jeepster project coming up. I am halfway through a 68 jeepster build that was inspired by your JK chassis swap where you shorten the chassis. I’m putting a JKU chassis under mine and shortened the wheel base 10 inches. I’m using most of the JK drive train, atlas transfer case and a metal cloak suspension kit. Can’t wait to see what you were doing with yours.
I completely support you Ian! We are here for you! Love your content!!👍👍
I appreciate that!
Ian, and everyone else, you should consider putting together an inexpensive Cold Cut Chop Saw your smaller jobs.
-under 3/16 thickness
-under 3 inch width
Use any inexpensive 7¼" maitre/chop saw (you can find them on site for at or under $100)
and a Diablo Cermet Blade ($35 ish)
The blades are designed for those saws rpm range and are easily available.
It's a small investment for the convenience.
Since you asked I'm currently looking for a shop. Preferably next to a house although I could remodel the house for the right shop! Wife seems to think my priorities are backwards but she doesn't have 3 storage units full of tools
That's a "slight addiction that I know that I have" 😂 Band saws are where it's at 👌 I was in a welding shop a while back picking up some 8 inch I-beam and the guy said do you want me to cut it and I asked what he had to cut it and he said bandsaw and I was like you betcha👍😂
I would love to see all your cars, trucks, buggies in one of your videos.. like line them all up or a walk through your garages and give a short story on each! That would be cool!!
A sort of Jay Leno's garage but slightly different. I'm in.
Planning that right now.....just have to get them all to the shop!!!!
@@BigTireGarage awesome! I’ll be watching!!
I agree with you on doing a retro inspired Cherokee dual cab. I’m also a big fan of the older panel wagons, military Jeep and Dodge flat fender trucks, vehicles of course the Wagoneer, and the Grand Cherokee.
Evolution chop saw (or competitor)- game changer. With the sparks/dust and time to cut of abrasive saw - I’d never go back. Time is money.
And yah…wear good earmuffs…& bandsaw is a must regardless
Finishing assembling my Swag/Harbor Freight powered tubing roller now, then next tool will probably be the Swag finger press brake to go in my 20 ton air over hydro Harbor Freight press. Then maybe the new Milwaukee M18 metal cutting saw, and pipe dream is the Arcdroid plasma cutter. Hand in hand with all these tools is updating all my current tools stands with wheels so everything is easier to move around to make the most of my tiny 2 car garage
I am working on a 1990 GMC K5 Jimmy. I love it. I would love help on it. Currently has a 6 inch lift, Bushwacker Fender Flares. 4.56 gears, and auburn lockers. Love it. Just need to get it to the finishing line. Hitting moab in March we will see how it does.
I bought a King 5x6 Dual swivel bandsaw about 9 years ago and have loved it ever since. I previously owned a 7x12 King saw with cooling and had it for probably 10 years prior to the smaller one. I have Never! regretted switching to the smaller saw without the cooling. The 5x6 works in both horizontal and vertical as well. I did switch to Olson blades because no longer had cooling and the blades last a few times longer then the standard blades.
A great addition to your drill press is annular cutters. I just made a video on them and getting through 1/4" plate in 10-15 seconds is a nice change from hole saws.
Thanks for more great content Ian!
I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado I got cheap that I am bench building into a trailrig/driver. I've always been empressed by the UA guys or anyone that drives their rig to the trail and back home. I've gone from mild sas swap with leaf springs to frame 2500 or custom frame swap with coil overs front and rear. I like the truck because it is a cheap 4wd but no idea what I'll do with it yet.
GREAT episode Ian, and I really liked the answer about the suspension and uptravel.
I'm building an extra cab TJ (cab and a half) with a military trailer bed. I saw one on Verne's CZcams channel and just really dug it.
Awesome Karma out to you man
🤘😁
Who's channel is that? I love seeing ideas like that. I have a yj that needs something crazy like that, otherwise its getting a faux jeepster style front and a extreme dovetail rear.
I have an extended cab tj I’m building too AKA the TJT lol😂
@callmesomething1425 I first saw it on Verne Simon's channel he caught it at KOH I think, it was a tan TJ, converted to a pickup (standard) cab, with a heavily modified Military trailer for the bed. It was exactly what I wanted to do, but I didn't know it until I saw it. It's the video titled "Some of the cool things Verne saw at KOH 2022" and the jeep truck is at timing mark 1:45 😎
@@jeepsnjunk9586 you should start a channel based on building this, an extra cab tj brute would be so cool.
@@vetguy2562 thanks I'll go look it up, I found that guy I just didn't find that particular video now I have something to continue my search.
I bought a porta-band when I started my super duty axle trimming. I want a second one now so I can have permanently in my SWAG table and one hand held.
Buffalo Trace bourbon my Friend and always a single cad truck will always be the bees knees. Love your show my brother
Ian I have a few of your other shirts and am thankful that you also have sizes for bigger guys. Being 6'6 325 I have a hard time finding offroad shirts in a 4x.
That LJ was a fantastic build to watch and my favorite one to date!! Excited to see what's in store for season 5 of FourWheeler!!
3Xl shirt for sure!
T-Shirts. I know you were thinking limited run, but 3X would be a size to definitely consider also. Peace
At 13:50. Yes! Love that FC truck. When will you be building a replica?
I am so with you on the band saw thing. I have a Harbor Freight 4x6 horizontal bandsaw I bought 20 years ago. With a little massaging they are incredible for the money and I wouldn't trade it for any other form of cutting metal in a similar fashion. If I had the budget I would have a true cold saw, but I would still use my HF 4x6. You will hardly use the chop saw once you have the bandsaw and I'm sure the Woodward Fab saw is a great value. As a very busy hobbyist I just can't justify that much money when my $200 saw has never given me a lick of trouble in 20 years.
Get some 4XL shirts in there for us big dogs i wear a 3XL but i prefer 4XL for chilling in.
2x72 belt grinder. Great for cleaning parts before welding or after plasma and refining edges for a custom fit project.
I have the Ameribrade and I LOVE IT
For the fun of old tech, here’s a flat spring question.
In front leaf spring applications are you a a fan of rear mounted shackles or front, and why?
For the where is it now. Where’s the Dakota Shop truck?
Side note is that where your crawlerado idea spawned from? 😂
🐇🕳 😂
I would love to get an old Bridgeport milling machine in my shop.
great video, my next new is a small vinyl wrap cutter/printer thanks
I wear a 3x I know they cost extra totally fine. I'm looking to upgrade my welder.
Always love your input fella! Thanks!
Ian- xl shirts are my vote and for a shop tool you seem to have it all. Look forward to see what you come up with
I think my next tool will be either a tube notcher (Build Co Tools), another die for my Rogue Fab M625, (1.75”) or the Rogue Fab mandrel attachment.
Get a cheap horizontal band saw from harbor freight see how Steve Summers modified his to have a oil cooler setup with coolant trough and pump. Also an evolution carbide cutoff saw no sparks.
The nicest thing about a good horizontal is the ability to step away after setting it up. With a back stop its even easier. Set up, adjust feed, turn on, go do something else.
For me, 48-50" press brake is likely the next tool i will buy/build.
exactly.....
@@BigTireGarage I know space is always a premium but you can get a used 16" Ellis for less than half price of a new one, and they will cut miles of steel without maintenance.
I have an evolution metal chop saw, haven’t used it in years, it’s really fast (easily 3x faster than abrasive) but it is obnoxiously loud and the cut waste is much bigger and burns pretty good. I use my horizontal band saw 98% of the time, the cuts are so clean, it’s super quiet, only draw back is it’s easily 10x slower. But quiet operation and very precise cuts are worth it to me, plus the blades are like $13, so keep an extra 3 on hand.
Yep....same thoughts exactly
You should build a full size rig and go out with the full size invasion crew. Would be cool to see something else
Thanks for the video Ian!
Love the videos. Currently building a 61 Willy’s pickup on a JKU chassis. Linked, LS swap, TH400,atlas on coilovers.
I would like a Large shirt, but XL might be okay depending on what brand they are.
I love the idea of the Cherokee made into a crew cab truck but instead of a gladiator bed, use the aftermarket bed moto built offers
I have to check measurements to see if it will work....but I have the gladiator bed
Ion, I know where 2 old Jeeps Cherokee's are here in Arkansas. Let me know next time you come this way and I show you. I'll go take some pics and email them to you...
Need some 3x shirts for us larger fella’s.
my next tool is going to be a plasma cutter. Ive got a couple of projects in mind so I'm going to get a really inexpensive plasma cutter. I don't do a bunch of cutting so I can't see dropping big money on one
Yes some cherokee content would be great.
You putting that VW Bug behind you on a 4x4 frame? Call it Creepy Crawler 😎
Get a Kurt drill/machine vise for your drill press
Thank you, I'm building a Comanche with gm powertrain and old ford half tons on coils (for now) lol
Couldn't have asked for a better answer and I'm relieved, I've got 4" up-travel with 21" belly clearance. I have the ACOS mounts so I can adjust higher.
You will be very happy with that package
Hey Ian, I understand the up-travel thing. I'm building a '72 Scout II for a guy, Dana 44's front & rear, he bought 14" coil over for the front with radius arms, not a 3 or 4 link. This is a packaging nightmare up front. I'll have to make some compromising to fab this up but, it should work. I really need your eyes over my shoulder on this one! Do you have any videos on this type of build that I could watch?
Glad you asked! I want to get the Swagoffroad stand for a Milwaukee band saw. For my next tool
Have that one...its awesome
Always fun to see you on screen
Could you give us a tour of storage??
Soooo, XJ on 3.5” lift. Belly is at about 20” and above midline of the wheels but only on 33s. With your philosophy, guess I need to cut the body more for bigger tars so I’m not too high and too heavy????
Excellent video
Ian you should check out DMW Industries, in Australia for dual cab conversions Landcruiser 79,200 and 300. Also Nissan Patrol.🇦🇺
Will do thanks for the suggestion
I want this Grizzly G9742 - 5" x 6" 1/2 HP Metal-Cutting Bandsaw w/ Swivel Head
The 5x6 is the perfect shop saw.
3xl t shirt please!
I'm getting ready to get the rbrt style socket from Mac tools. The hex Allen key style is awesome
Building a LCG CJ6 on 42’s
Love your content.
On a project like your Willys Wagon, or a custom built like the YJ shop truck, how do you VIN / title that type of project for road use? Or are those vehicles something that is purpose built for trail / off-road & show use so that license plates & street legality are not an issue?
Im looking at possibly doing a ground up (new frame, drivetrain & tub) build on a YJ concept, but I do want to have it road legal & enjoy it.
I think the next tool for my garage would be small but very useful to me. It would be a portaband with a table mount so I can cut smaller metal items.
I have one. And the only thing I use more is a grinder. I'd get a corded saw and put a foot pedal to turn it on an off.
That's a great idea! I use mine all the time....get the SWAG mount
Thanks! Honestly I'm tired of burning through cutoff wheels making brackets haha I'll check out the swag mount.
Always wanted to do AL Tig welding. I'm hoping to upgrade my MigPak10 to a multi process unit. Unfortunately $ is a consideration
Hey Ian
I was watching Nate at dirt lifestyle and he mentioned something about a rocklander. Im assuming its an overlander/rockcrawler. Can you explain what that is?
Im building a suburban up for overlanding and want to run ozark, crazy idea im sure but hey dreams rarely follow logic 🤷🏽♀️
Ian, would you build another buggy with a fwd import engine/tranny mounted in the back and mounted longitudinal.
Also for a where is it now you started to build a red one on xtreme4x4 but never finished it. This being a build I really enjoyed watching I was hoping to see another one built.
Just got a Bridgeport mill
Have you ever used ORI struts in your builds and do they really allow you to overcome packaging challenges by eliminating the need for bumps and sway bars?
I've never seen you use a lathe. What do you think about the usability of a metal lathe in the type of fabrication that you do and why wouldn't it be the next tool in your shop?
Space more than anything else....as much as I think I would use one I don't want to use up the space in the shop
What are your thoughts on “safari cars” or lifted offroad built cars? Any chance you’d build one or if you were to, which car would you build? Any more modern cars make that list
LOVE THEM!!! and if I had the cash it would be a Porsche 911 Safari
Can you go over crawl ratio and gears. Better to have a hearing in the trasfer case or at the diffs?
You da man Ian!
I'm surprised you don't have a cold saw.
So lately I've heard tire descriptions as stickies, red labels, etc. What is the difference in those?
3XL please! I like cheeseburgers.
ME TOO
Great video as always! When you start a mash up project, how do you decide where to start since nothing is meant to go together? Suspension to frame, body to frame, etc. Planning to stretch a 2d JK Frame and put a mid stretch TJ body, tons, & coilovers. THANKS!
Do you have a swag off-road porta band table so handy no cutting intricate tabs with grinder or plasma cutter
Yep I have one....LOVE IT
Thanks for the information in the up/down travel. For coil springs (not coilovers) how do you determine how much lift a certain spring will give you? I am building a light 2 door JK, and most companies report lift numbers for armored 4 doors. Trial and error can be costly and I dont want to be too high with my short wheelbase.
Medium brother
Next Garage tool is a ale press table.
3x please
I like my evo chopsaw
Could you build a full size looking Cherokee or the fc on a jku frame? What’s up with the towverlander build? That thing could’ve been crazy
Still have it....I honestly...want it to be 4x4 so that is what I am chasing right now
@@BigTireGarage I was so interested in that build on the show. Hope you can make the thing 4x4 and show us soon!
my next purchase for my shop is...a shop...
When you build a car for the show, do you have to buy it from production or are they just all yours as part of doing the show?
Mine
What would you recommend for fabricating brackets and other pieces, quickly yet still looking good for people who don't have the space or the money for a plasma table?
What are your plans for the Tesla motor laying in the background, wasn’t it originally for the Volkswagen Beetle?
VW Thing
2xl please!!!
If you where to buy a tub bender for bumpers and cages exct. But you on a budget. What type of bender would you suggest. I want something that I can do different size tube. But I don't have any clue what direction I should go. I would like the best I can afford. But don't want to spend a lot of major money. Cause it will not be used a ton.
Hey Ian! Can we get your thoughts on newer 6, 8 or 10 speed transmissions in the off-road scene? They seem unpopular despite their versatility. Have a good day!
That’s a good question. He’ll probably pick it. My guess is those higher speed trannys are newer therefore more expensive.
XL/XT please
I wear medium carhart shirts.
Hi Ian, my 3500 Ram dually 4th Gen has a 4inch lift. Getting hard to load and unload. My question is whether lower it down or just sell and buy a stock with no lift?
Ian, I have quite a few toys and they are all insured with annual policies and cost an arm and a leg. How do you handle insurance on all of your toys? Do you insure them when you are going to use or have annual premiums?
What is your favorite/most used tool in your shop when it comes to building 4x4s
What is a good brake bender for the money?
Hey Ian would you use full hydraulic steering like psc and if so can i use my stock powersteering pump i have hydroboost on my ford f350
XL… I used to be a L, but that was before I got married 😂
Are you going to go to Nate's shop and help with the Suzuki re-build?
If I had some time I would but we are about to start filming FourWheeler...so crazy busy soon
@@BigTireGarage love the videos and shows. Keep up the great content. You always inspire me to want to build, but farming takes the priority most of the time.
Ian I am starting a build on a 1971 jeepster commando half cab and I’m thinking about going with a custom frame, instead of the C channel frame that will bend and crack. How should I go about building a frame? Buy a fabricated LJ frame since they are relatively the same wheelbase, or start from scratch?
Watch this channel and this season of FourWheeler
Who was your favorite fabricator to work with?
