When the Governor's son is taken hostage by bandits, a mysterious swordsman named Golden Swallow (Cheng) is hot on their trail to ensure the son's release. What the bandits don't realize, however, is that Golden Swallow is actually a woman, and that the hostage is her brother. Determined to set him free, no matter how many goons she has to fight her way through in doing so, she is aided in her quest by a drunken beggar (Yueh Hua) who may have a closer connection to the bandits' leader than he initially lets on.

With the recent news of Cheng Pei Pei’s passing, I finally opened up the Arrow Blu-ray that was given to me for helping out re-translating the English subs. I put my heart into that translation. Even though the film isn’t my favorite, I felt the movie still deserved a respectable translation, especially because the film is very important in the history of HK cinema. The original subs on the IVL dvd were atrocious. I’m not too crazy about the color grading of the 4K Specrum release. Anyway, thanks for the video comparison.
Damn that 4K looks amazing
It seems that 4K Spectrum color is darker than the others.
I've got the 88 films blu-ray of this, which is an amazing transfer and I think was only released in the UK but may be region free, I have no idea if it's better or worse than the Arrow version but thought I would throw that into the mix. Really interesting comparison video man.
It looks the same as the Arrow release just proper aspect ratio. I no longer have that copy
@@TimesSqKungFU thanks man. I was going to double dip with the Arrow version but don't think I'll bother. Kinda hope they get around to releasing Shawscope volume 3 soon.
@@mitchsfridaynightsongclub2594 If you're a stickler for aspect ratio, then the 88 Films version is definitely the better bet. Arrow has a high bitrate and some good extras, not to mention the Tony Stella artwork, but it's otherwise framed incorrectly.
@@KingSigy nah I am not that bothered about that sort of thing, as long as the picture looks good I am not fussed. I did land up double dipping with 8 Diagram pole fighter, had the 88 films version, but Arrow had way better extras, especially the Tony Rayns essay. Thanks for letting me know mister.
Thank you my friend.
The DVD actually looks decent. The 4K seems to have better and/or different colour grading, higher contrast and a noticeable increase in detail even on my phone. I hope Arrow will bring this to the US/CAN market so that non ripping and non pirates can enjoy. Great comparison video!
The Arrow Blu-Ray is a Region A release. 88 Films handled the Blu-Ray for the UK.
@@KingSigy Yes, I meant the 4K blu-ray in the future.
@@hunterwilliams4250 Oh, I misunderstood. 4K UHD's are region-free, so you could import the French set if you really wanted.
@KingSigy Specturm doesn't include Eng subs on their releases, so I would need to rip the disc and add external subs from a private tracker or opensubs which is just not ideal for me. Would just download if I wanted a digital file
@hunterwilliams4250 I feel you. Even ripping and trying to sync previous subs could a headache. The easiest route for me is translating the French subs with ChatGPT translator API to English. Which does a solid job and I used in the best. Not better than an actual translator of course.
Looks like they took liberties with the 4K colour grading. They better not start doing that with all the Shaw library the same way they did with the Police Story 4Ks.
They used the French DVD as reference from what I was told. Arrow killed it as usual. Police Story used the 35mm print grade as reference which is the intended look.
A UHD release is interesting. I wonder if it was restored by L’Immagine Ritrovata or Spectrum.
Spectrum only applied the HDR and color grading.
