Only if I press ridiculously hard. It seems like it’s better to go over one line lightly twice rather than pressing too hard once.

No. But I suggest you move your card down from the top of the board when scoring, so that when you use the tool to make the crese it will 'score' the full lenght of the card.
ALSO: To make the alighnment MUCH easier, cut the card to the correct size before you score the crease, then all you need to do is align the card LEFT & TOP...
